That was supposed to be charming?  after selecting that choice, I thought that that was the dickish tone or something

This is exactly how it felt, like Fable...I'm shocked that Bioware would revamp and change the forumla of DA Origins when it was great to begin with...how anyone can enjoy this shallow combat vs. the strategy and depth of DA Orgins is beyond me  :(

They've attempted to reduce the micro-management. I quite enjoyed the strategy and immersion in Origins. The combat is diffiently more fluid. I liked the combat, it was a step up far as pace and animations go. There still is that strategy feel to the game, it's not a overture though, sadly. I feel that this is Biowares attempt at an action-rpg instead of a classical RPG, which they have been doing since the Black Isle/interplay days of PC gaming.

I just finished playing the PC demo.

I liked the new look of the world, and having a voiced PC was a nice change but some of the design choices confuse me. The new darkspawn look ridiculous, like monkey-walking fleshy-skeleton things. They seem more animalistic and less human, which makes them less scary/threatening IMO.

I played as a mage, and found the combat to be much more boring despite the change in pace. I often found myself with little to do besides nuke my party (and hopefully a few darkspawn) with a fireball every once in a while. Although I remember feeling this way in the early mage levels of DA:O, so hopefully that will change as more spells are made available. (I did have more fun with the early part where you are all pumped up by the lying dwarf)

I also didnt care about any of the NPCs, they just seemed boring although I havent met nearly all of them, so hopefully the interesting ones arent in the demo.

My biggest gripe however (and something that I mentioned in some other threads) is the lack of tactical camera. The lack of tactical camera was the thing that I could not get used to in the demo, and has me seriously debating canceling my preorder and waiting for a price drop. Its pretty disappointing because DA:O was one of my favorite games in the last few years. I can understanding people not wanting the camera, but I dont understand why they would remove it for people who prefer it. Even adding the ability to simply move the camera around would go a long way in my book, even if the height isn't changed. In addition, the immobile camera made it very difficult to target AOE spells properly. There were a few times where I accidentally targeted behind a group of enemies, or coudnt target them because I couldnt position the camera so I could see them properly. It all feels very restrictive.

And finally, one minor thing, I disliked not having enemy names pop up when I held down TAB. Combined with nothing being able to move the camera, it made it difficult to easily view and prioritize targets without having to mouse over individual enemies to see what they were.

All in all I was fairly underwhelmed by the demo. Im still going to play the game, and in all likelihood I will enjoy it, but Bioware has seen its last blind faith preorder from me. From now on I'll wait for a demo or some reviews before I purchase a Bioware product

WOW.

I remember all those fools yelling "pre-alpha!" when the first screenshots of this abomination came out. Whelp, demo looked identical to me! (and that's a bad thing.)

I played on 360. Graphics are atrocious, and game-play feels flimsy and pointless.

I am disappointed, but I got a bad feeling about this game when details started coming out.
"Think like a general, fight like a spartan!" Lol, shut up, Bioware.
"Think like 12 year old, press A button until everything's dead."

Whatever, it's liberating not to care anymore. I definitely won't be picking this up. Sellouts.

So I just got done with the Demo. After playing it, I am excited for DA2 but there were some negatives.

Pros:
-Combat is a lot more responsive, but still plays like Origins. Essentially it is a suped up version of Origins. Playing the Demo on the PC I found myself pausing and planning my strategy. The tactical element is still there if that is how you play.
-The level up system is much better than what was in Origins. The web makes a lot more sense than a tree
-The abilities all look cool for the most part. I like the firestorm spell for mages.
-The dialouge system is well done, the icon indicates when a response will be forceful, sarcastic, etc. I also found myself picking a mix of different types of responses depending on the situation.

Negatives(significant):
-The graphics are dated, to put it nicely. Environments are pretty bland, and the game is not easy to look oat. Now it isnt ugly by any means imo, but it is not up to today's standards either.

Minor Annoyances:
-Combat animations are slighlty too fast in some cases.
-Hawke has a completley different voice from what I was expecting
-Some of the conversations seemed too brief and not as drawn out as they would be in real life or a movie(this is typical of pretty much every game ever)
-I cant have the full game until March 8th

Overall the only thing that is a major issue is the way the game looks. Hopefully it will look better on high settings with DX11.

Verdict: 4.2/5

Didn't realize this before, but what questions you ask in the "investigate" part of dialogue affects your friendship/rivalry with your companions. Example: when you meet Aveline and Wesley, you miss 5 friendship with Bethany if you ask why they are out there, and 5 friendship with Carver if you ask if they can be trusted.

I feel like this should've been made more obvious, as just labeling every question with a "?" icon kinda gives off the feeling that all questions are the same and they don't really matter to anyone but Hawke. Not a huge deal, but I know that some gamers (like me) like to ask all those questions, and I had no idea they'd mean anything more then codex entries and maybe opening other questions that WOULD mean something.

Wow, you sure of this ? The fact that you can repeat the same line over and over would make that even worse !

Xbox 360 Demo
Male Rogue and Mage

Loved - The combat was a lot of fun, very fluid. The in game tutorial needs to tell people that target selection is done with the the D-Pad. Using the Mass Effect dialogue radial is a fantastic improvement. Thank you for letting us run around to gain health back and let cooldowns pass. The environment plays a role now. Once you were targeted by a ranged attack in DA:O, it was going to hit you. Now, you can get behing a rock or pillar and it protects you!

Improvements- The female chars breasts are a little huge, take them down one cup size, except for Isabella, it fits her. The rogue is flying around and does the Darth Maul kick flip thing too often. Whatever causes him to do it needs to be a little less frequent. The button mashing for attacking has me worried, can we have an auto attack with one press? The potion cool down seemed too long, I lost my whole party in the Bethany Death Ogre battle and I didn't think it made sense. In the cutscenes, they seemed a little too hurried, like they were on 1.5x speed. Make them relax a little, try and make the transitions less abrubt and buggy too. Also, enlarge the font size of the subtitles and offer a setting to have them be on top or bottom of the screen in the options.

Overall, awesome game. I am very excited!

Agreed, that was terrible. In fact, all the middle options were pretty bad compared to the top/bottom versions.

Just finished the PC demo and overall thoughts were 'Meh'

At first, I was kinda PO'ed at the fact that character customization was locked for the demo...short for demonstration, you know, show of the elements of your product that you're proud of? You gave us a character customizer before the first one to play around with, why not with DA2? Are you hiding something? Are you afraid that since you did nothing to improve upon it that we would get upset? Well, kinda upset that it's not included at all.

Locked inventory - Again, more locking of features that need to be demonstrated. I really wanted to explore the UI that the game was using. Not being able to fool around with the equipment left me disgruntled.

Fast paced click click click..click click D2 fatigue - Hack n slash clicker came to mind when combat started. I hear that the option for auto attack will be enabled in the full version...so why the hell would it not be available in the demo? Here I am, trying to assign attack orders to my characters, and they are standing their cause I have to keep clicking for them to swing their sword. The only thing I can see they would do this is to make it more involving for someone with a controller. While button mashing may be engaging for some, it's not quite for me, especially for a tactical RPG(Which I seem to be wrong about now, now an action rpg)

Dialog wheel, the ME2...effect - During my first playthrough with DA:O, I found myself pausing reading the dialog choices very carefully, because none had any real clear cut answer. They were always more shades of grey. When you implement this dialog wheel, as seen in ME2, you basically have A,B, C...side questions. A = picard answer, B, neutral answer, C - evil answer. Personally, it ends up disconnecting me from conversations. Now, I understand we only experienced a snippet of a game, but remember, a demo is made for a reason, to impress customers.

Other things -
The transition between the family and that tavern seen was very awkward. Was that just shortened and cut out for the demo? Who is this woman? Why am I helping her again? Very confused

The bottom line is, I love Bioware, they make rich worlds and stories. I won't judge the whole game from such a small portion. I'll still support the devs for all their hard work and buy the game. However i'm still left with an empty feeling. The rpg that required me to think and play carefully no longer exists. While that's a welcome change for a lot of people, for me, it makes me a very sad panda.

TL;DR

Dragon Age 2 is different from Dragon Age 1

wow i could not have said this more clearly myself.
what this person have wrote is exactly my felings and expectations, to DA 2 after playing the demo on pc.

Not being able to enjoy the battles cause they are over so fast.
basicly teleporting from enemie to enemie in mele, without even seing the moves (exept for the occasionly legs in the air pinwheel thingy the rouge does)
that anoying whip sound every time the mage attack when dancing around his stick.
the A;B;C dialog option are a letdown to.

BUT!
this is a demo and i have faith in BW abilities to create master pieces.
I will base my jugdement on wether they sold out, or if they still are the mastes of rpg.

Ps: this is not a rant its just that i have been waiting paitently for 3 years, since 2008 when i first learned that DA 2 was in the making.
So yea my expectations were pretty high and got crushed pretty hard.

I'm very impressed with both the 360 and PC versions, aside from a few technical issues which I hope are only related to this being a demo.

Combat feels good, voiced protagonist is instantly preferable to *DEAD STARE*.

All in all it's left me very impatient for release day.

First, the combat controls.  I remember being on a message board (probably at GameFAQs) where somebody said that you would have to rapidly press A to fight, as in say Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.  I play the PC version instead of the console version, but I am relieved to say that that person was being foolish.  I found the controls to be similar enough to Origins to not get lost.  Overall, my fears over the combat system have mostly faded.

However, the 60 second cooldown on the healing spell is way too much.  I was in a battle with an ogre, the healing spell was recharging, and I had used one of my quick heals.  The number said 3 or 4, I can't remember, but it had been a while since I had used my first one.  Regardless, the game didn't let my warrior Hawke heal, and I died.

I had to use my quick thinking to allow Bethany and Aveline to finish the battle without me, but we eventually won the day.

I was disappointed in the lack of inventory (yet out of habit, I kept looting everything) or custom hair, but that's just a demo thing.  No big deal there.

In conclusion: Thumbs up, boys and girls.  Not bad.  But now I have to try out a mage.

Edit: I said I couldn't use DirectX 11 because apparently I don't have Vista SP2?  Also, I don't know about you folks, but I had to crank my little speakers up.  Maybe I need some bigger ones?

FemHawke delivers it in a resigned "theres some small silver lining here" manner, while malehawke is rocking a "well at least they're both dead now" attitude.

I see-- yeah, I was playing maleHawke. It felt pretty inappropriate.

Yeah I checked a few times.  If you go straight to letting Aveline and Wesley join you, you get 10 for Bethany and 5 for Carver.  Ask the questions I mentioned and you lose points.  I doubt it stacks (just incase of a misclick or something), but it's there.  Is it there for every conversation?  Dunno.  Could be just because you stopped to chat while running from darkspawn, but the third question doesn't have any negatives.  For now I'm just gonna stick to asking the questions I really care about just to make sure instead of asking them all in "investigate" like I did in ME2.

Others have said how the beginning is completely devoid of emotion, and I just realized that this is exactly what I've been thinking for a week now but haven't been able to point out. It's true, the beginning is boring. You couldn't care less if your brother/sister died, you don't feel anything for your "family," and the landscape is nondescript.

The character development is essentially awful. I hope the writers haven't been slacking off. David Gaider himself said they didn't want to "rest on their laurels" and that statement is a bit ironic now after seeing the demo.

Ok Machine specs first. i7-860 1gb ddr 5 had settings at 1200 x 800, 8gb ram. Running Win 7.

First of all, thank you for the two people in the Tech Support forum who made it possible to play the demo. I was getting a bit frustrated trying to figure out what was wrong. But they were awesome help, which is one of the reasons I like the Bioware Community, both developers and gamesrs.

Onto the game: Graphically, I love it. I know it is not the realistic look that a lot of people were hoping for after playing Origins. While a realistic look is great, having something that is visually apart from the norm can be good in some regards. This kind of reminds me of the medieavel tapestries that you would see in some of the Coptic temples and churches. Also, has the feel of that scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where they are talking about the origins of the Deathly Hallows. So being a medieavel buff, I liked the graphics. Even the intro reliefs were cool..

On the game play, I have to agree with those who have said it sets a new pace. I like how when you are in combat, especially playing on the pc, I am not sure about the console, but it seems fluid. There were some instances of sticky play where you are trying to get the camera movement to get new enemies into play.

The quick heal icon is FANTASTIC!!! Damn, that irked the living daylights out of me in the first one. Even though you had the options in the pause wheel and by adding it to your numbered slots, just having a quick heal button is great. Same with the mana.. Awesome job.

Flemeth's comeback was awesome.. Flemeth is awesome, and agreeing with the above, thanks for keeping the same VA. Her voice is the perfect fit for Flemeth, as it is for Captain janeway.. you could just not change that.

Getting back to the combat, One thing I am a bit unsure of, and I guess that is because i am not used to it yet, is the camera. It doesn't seem to have a full topdown mode, nor does it seem to have a full level mode. I am not sure if that is going to be implemented in the full game, but having gone from the 360 console version which was ok, to the PC one, which gives you a good range between the two values and then to this where it seems to be missing those modes, is a bit of an adjustment.

The other thing that was hard to get used to, but nice to have, was my character talking. Finally, none of these dear in a headlights moments, or really bizarre facial expressions that just don't seem to fit with what is being said. It was great. Who is doing the female Hawke. It almost sounded like Liara in some points, but I get the feeling it is not.

Summation: Good game, glad I pre-ordered in December to get all the extra goodies. When DirectX 11 support is added, I think the game is going to look astounding. I am not going to fanboy it and give the demo a 8 or higher, just because there is not enough to go on, and because it was a pain in the butt to get running, but, if the game plays like it appears it will, then I think it is defintely going to push a 9.

PS, finally, a 1 button take all items key.. why was this not available in DAO???

Well you will still get to fully customize Hawke for the retail release.
Unless you meant more along the lines of racial choices.

You do realize that you can create your own custom appearance in the full game, right?  Who cares what the default looks like?

Played it on pc. Sorry to say I don't think DA2 is going to do for this series what BG2 did to that series. This feels like a ninja console game set in DA universe. The intended audience seems to be 12-20 age group.  Posted Image

DA1 is a classic and most likely will remain the best game in this universe. Nothing that was released after origins had the polish and depth that I enjoyed so much.Bioware had a chance to outperform the BG series after success of origins. Your developers are experienced enough to know that doing acrobatics in air and fighting hordes upon hordes of darkspawn has nothing to do with role play elements of game. Please concentrate on your true expertise and leave this type of games to other generic companies. Posted Image

Played through with Mage, Rogue and Warrior. Rogue is my favorite. Cassandra looked better with the white hair.
