What has improved:

Rogue! Rogue! Rogue!
The use of “she” as a pronoun in reference to Hawke
Voiced character
Fighting/action
Graphics
Abilities/skills screen
Character  rivalry (can’t wait to see where this leads)
Flemeth – that’s an entrance

What is just as awesome as DAO:

Music
Blood/gore
Narrative presentation (so far)
Character voices

Nervous but holding judgment on:

Not being able to speak with followers while not at a home base
Isabella not wearing pants – this is a little out there and I could care less about the numerous raging breast size debates that have gone on, but come on…
I know a lot of emphasis and marketing attention has gone into making the fighting better and it is clearly improved, BUT I loved DAO because of the story and well-written companions.  I would gladly sacrifice fighting and graphics if it meant more dialogue options, quests and further layered story arc.
Dialogue wheel – I have played ME so I am familiar, my only concern is that because the character is voiced there will be less dialogue options.  I believe DAO had more response options.

What wasn’t great:

Mom Hawke over child’s death…voice actress really dropped the ball or maybe it was the lines.

Glitches:
Cut scenes a little choppy
Hawke would not fight at one point  – had to switch characters and click back
Could see right through a sliver of Isabella’s body in the end cut scene

Shout out – first demo I have ever played and first game I have ever pre-ordered.  Thank you bioware for making story count and including the female protagonist.

Not sayin' people can't dislike the changes, but "because the old stuff was okay" is not a really in of itself a good reason.  Explain why the new stuff is bad, what it does wrong in your eyes, and how the old stuff was superior.  Then no pictures mocking your argument.

I am a huge Bioware fan and I've been playing their fantasy based games since Baldur's Gate came out.  This is the first time I have ever *hated* something they've produced.  I want Bioware to really understand and experience just what a poor impression their demo left on a longtime fan/customer and potential purchaser of their new game so I'm going to chronicle them exactly as I experienced them:

Oh boy oh boy it's finally here! YAY- I loved DAO so much I can't wait to try this demo!!  Downloading....
(2 hours later)
Download of DragonAge2Demo_F93M2qCj_EnEsItPlRu.exe has failed- cannot read from source file. Please try to download again.  [whimper]
(3 hours later)
Cannot install from DragonAge2Demo_F93M2qCj_EnEsItPlRu.exe- cannot read from source file.
Ok.. to the tech support forums, maybe someone else has had this problem and has a fix for it.
ahhh ok.. who knew- don't download the new Bioware game from the Bioware site because it doesnt work- get it from fileplanet instead.  Right...
(12 minutes later)
Yay!! Finally downloaded and installed here we go!!
[Crash#1]  Cannot run DragonAge2Demo_EnEsItPlRu - cannot find d3dx9_43.dll
{sigh} Back to the tech support forums.
To the microsoft page to download dx stuff!
(15 minutes later)
Hooray!! The demo works!  Hmm...this is odd... people seem to be talking but they don't have any voices..... {Restart demo with subtitles on to be certain people are talking and its not some sort of wierd silent film}  Nope definitely no voices... Back to the tech support forums!!
Ok apparently my lovely surround sound is the culprit- forcing to stereo fixed the missing voices- on with the show!
a few seconds later as I hit the character creation screen...
[Crash #2]  {mutter grumble foam at mouth} ok BACK to the tech support forums...
Right ok pretend to be using DX 11 even though it doesnt actually work with DX 11...
Halle-freakin-julia its finally working right and no more crashes.

All that was just to be able to actually play your demo- needless to say I was already feeling less than charitable towards it, however because of my great respect for you and your past accomplishments I was trying to stay open minded. So I gave it a run through as a female mage.

Impressions came thick and fast:

Oh this is really excellent music- really, its just as gorgeous as DAO and really brought me back into the mindset of Thedas and Darkspawn and Grey Wardens, etc...

Ohh the new characters and armors look good- considering the game is locked at medium settings.  I'm thinking they'll look really good when I can turn on all the bells and whistles.  Lothering on the other hand looks like footage from the Mars rover explorer- is it just because this is a demo and they cheaped out?  I hope the rest of the game doesnt look this uninspired, dull, and with no little details.  Wheres the chess boards? The trees?  The shrubberies??

What in the.. why the hell is everyone speed walking like they're doing a conga line in a Richard Simmons workout video- and why are the weapons stupidly ginourmous like WoW?!  And why is my mage now wailing on things with her staff like Donatello of the ninja turtles??!  Why is everyone fighting anime style with ridiculously exaggerated speeds/gestures?? This is *horrible*!

And who the heck designed this god awful UI???!  Its completely out of character for the DAO series- not to mention clunky, ugly, and I *hate* where they put the party members- and you can't move them either!  I *loathe* what they've done with the UI and the combat.  I might be able to live with it but its not the game I loved - why does everyone always try to ram console formats down the PC gamers' throats?

ohhh ok the conversation wheel here we go- RP time Yay!   Time to see how this whole wheel thing works.  Ok... wings, happy mask, angry fist.... kind of kindergarten but I guess a few prompts can't hurt.   Hmm...but I only get short little paraphrases to clue me in to what I'm going to say....aannnnnddd...what I say is nothing like what the paraphrase suggests.  Ok.. how the hell am I supposed to RP properly if I can't say what I want to say.  I don't want to play russian roulette with the conversation wheel here Bioware...

Hmm..cutscenes are rough and choppy... some of the people stagger delivering their lines and they all jumble up together.

Wow.. the new darkspawn fall fashion line is Fashions by Skeletor?  The old darkspawn actually scared me and gave me the creeps- these ones just look silly.

I'm not going to comment on the trite and hackneyed family member X dies like a Star Trek redshirt to try and give me some backstory and motivation because I can forgive that.  I can even forgive the pirate chick with the pumpkins in her bra- you are catering to a large and varied audience some of whom may appreciate that after all.

What I can't forgive is the dumbing down well past the point of stupidity or sanity of the foundation of roleplaying- the dialogue choices and that includes the loss of being able to speak to my companions whenever I want to wherever I am.  Or the need for strategy and tactics and careful use of skills and resources to get through combat.  Nope its all just one giant super fast LESS QQ MOAR PEWPEW!!!!1111 hackfest now.  You Bioware, who I always swore told the best stories, gave the most enthralling, stirring, emotionally charged performances with vibrant believable worlds full of scenery and detail have chucked all that out the window have sold your soul to the uberleet hack'n'slash devil.  I really don't know what else to say- it breaks my heart because I was always a huge fan of yours, but I just cancelled my pre-order and I'm giving all my friends this honest feedback.  Please think  about addressing some of these concerns and maybe you'll be able to bring some of your faithful back to the fold.

(edited to put in one point I left out when copying from my list)

Throwing in my two cents. I just completed my demo and I have to say I'm very impressed. I loved it! I started FemHawke rouge and while combat is addictive I felt I was a button masher. It later changed some what after I got some abilities under my belt. I will say that my first play through will most likely be a mage. I love, love, love what you've done with the mage class. You actually fight with your staff and I actually felt bad ass. This demo was a major tease and I cannot wait to have the full product.

Our inventories were locked in the demo, so I just hope my armor appearances will change like it did in DAO. I loved dressing up my characters and witnessing how their armor and abilities change as they grow. By the way I love how little bits and pieces of DAO's story was thrown in for good measure. I smiled @ Flemeth and her comments.

Crossposting from NeoGaf:

My PC impressions are these (note: I loved DA:O, never finished
Awakening, my only real complaint was the story was boring and
uninteresting as per usual Bioware style, and the major complaint with
DA was the fights were tedious and the game wasn't even hard)

Graphics:
Set to the max it allows on DX11 (my card only supports
dx10.1) on "high" with forced AA to max and forced AF to max in my ATI
panel on the latest drivers. The game looks like crap, compared to other
games lately. Sure, the technical aspect of it is better than DA:A
which seems to run at 30fps at max, but the art design is awful. This
whole "HOT RODDED" art style is for the birds. Flemith
looks stupid and sexualized, the enemies now look like the Putty Patrol
from Power Rangers in both design and utility. Hopefully the graphics
will be improved but uh, look at this crap right here:

http://i.imgur.com/kQLYk.jpg (I don't think this constitutes a spoiler since it's in the first 15 minutes of the game, but I'm linking it just in case.)

That is so jarring, low res pants with high res tops (reasonably
anyways). I hope it's just him and not that suit in particular if you
can obtain it, otherwise I won't wear it period.

Also Aveline and Varric while running tend to ice skate, and once you
notice it's really hard to not see it anymore. This happens because the
running animation is slower than the actual movement speed based on the
animation. At least running up stairs slows you down! I really hate all
the angular designs and think it's totally unnecessary when they had a
perfectly fine style before. The animations as well strike me as weak
and "over the top" because they strike so fast and with so much
unnecessary flourish, so I hope someone makes a mod that cuts the speed
in half. Also I feel the UI could be less "console oriented." My
complaint with ME2 (since this obviously where DA2 takes most of it's
design liberties, at least w/r/t the UI) was it didn't support proper
KB/M interaction (mouse wheel, enter button, etc) whereas DA had all
these, and only the PC version of ME1 from Demiurge Studios did.

Music:
More of the same from DA:O, which I felt was the weakest link. Forgettable and plain.

Sound: Overall good, with some complaints like the plinky stab sounds and poor mastering (low voices and loud explosions)

Gameplay:
Okay here's the important part. There is more mobility with
casting spells and moving around in combat than there was before in DA,
this I like a lot. I like that things are still auto attack, though I
wish (because of the swarm of enemies) there was a button to start
attacking the nearest target so I don't have to pause, stop, select, and
unpause to attack because of how fast everyone's moving. I like that
the animations are not indicative of the actual gameplay, it's
just visual fluff. You're not actually playing an action-rpg (GOOD. I
didn't want DA to be that) or Dynasty Warriors, it just looks that way.
This is something I feel couldn't be properly conveyed with videos or
screenshots, and I feel that is probably why the game starts off as you
being overpowered as it is. They're probably trying to appeal to those
who thought the game on the consoles was too awkward and plodding (I
never played it on anything but the PC, same with ME2) by making it
absurd instead, however I consider the "trash mobs explode in a sea of
blood by swinging your sword in the general direction of them" to be
egregious. There was one situation I liked that, and it was when Walking
Bomb proc'd. Even after Varric's exaggeration, enemies were still this
way. The demo is stuck at Normal, and while I played DA:O on normal and
thought it was easy, this on normal is even easier. In fact, I think the
difficulty is artificially inflated by not allowing you to equip any
items you pick up and the fact that playing a mage, you're forced to
dump a point into creation in order to heal, since one party member
(Depending on the class you choose) dies
right at the start. This is only really because you have no equips and
you might as well be wearing clothes and punching it with your bare
fists. That being said, that wasn't even that hard, just improper
planning. I'm sure other classes will be easier to start for the
aforementioned spoiler. Also the other complaint I had about DA:O being
too tedious? Well, there's even more trash mobs this time around. You
can't customize your party member's armor (why?) and so far NPC
interaction is pretty flat and characters all deliver their lines with
barely any emotion and it's all very anticlimactic. While this is to be
expected from Bioware, I hope there is tons more interaction that isn't
delivered so flatly. Tactics need to be worked on (by setting them),
because the (default set) AI is still really stupid.

Overall Impression:

I'm actually satisfied. I saw the videos and pictures (or the lack
thereof on bioware's part) and really thought I was going to hate it.
Once I tried it out for myself I noticed it was pretty much DA:O in
everything but awful art and animation decisions. It's not as bad as
they marketed it to be, but I can tell that even with the choice of
voicing the PC (I prefer unvoiced, this allows me to pretend I'm playing
myself, rather than controlling the actions of someone else) I'm going
to enjoy this overall.

I hope this was informative and neutral enough of a review of the demo for anyone who's still waiting :)

it looks like the demo just skips around. Alot of pple mentioned some story rushing in the demo or time jumping. I'm pretty sure this was just done for the demo and not the full game. After all they had a bunch of cut scenes just mashed up. Im guessing this was intentional. While in the full game, all this will not be rushed and it will be as we'd like it to be.

Also, ive noticed that character customization is gonna happen. It's just locked in the demo version. Im happy they're going to have this.

Also, the female character does run funny. Kind of like she's floating or running on ice.

Not going to make judgements on story or anything overarching, just my impressions on this short little piece.

Played on 360.

My game froze permanently twice, once during the last battle of the prologue, and once during... the credits. Framerate bogs down during some cutscenes and conversations- this is really unfortunate, considering how much more visually and dynamic they are than in Origins. Pauses and freezes between cutscenes and conversations also sabotage the polish.

My biggest annoyance however, was that music would suddenly cut out at the end of cutscenes- most notably, Aveline's introduction and the sibling-crushing ogre intro. The music would abruptly cut from score, to silence, to battle music. Also.. between Varric's exposition and the Hawkes running. Distracting, obnoxious.

Otherwise, the first time I listened to Flemeth's first lines, I shrieked in delight. "Well well, what have we here?" Like mother like daughter.

Loved it! I can't wait until March 11! =) Just two small things, and I'm sorry if either of these have been addressed before:

1) I've got absolutely horrendous hearing and so I play with subtitles on at all times. I really really hate that the party banter is anchored above the speaking party member's head instead of somewhere centralized. I had the same problem in DA:O and it was really unfortunate because I missed so much party banter. When the subtitles are above their heads, it's not hard to miss at all, especially if you're running around. I know I can't be the only hearing impaired person who plays :(

2) Can we no longer lock AOE spells onto enemies? I used that quite frequently in DA:O, where I knew a pack of enemies were coming, and they certainly weren't going to stay in place for long so I'd target an enemy instead of an area with the spell, making sure that when they moved they'd still get hit. I realize I could target the ground where I predict they will be and that would achieve somewhat the same effect, but I definitely preferred it the other way.

Just my two bits of minor feedback, thanks BioWare! :)

WOW.

I remember all those fools yelling "pre-alpha!" when the first screenshots of this abomination came out. Whelp, demo looked identical to me! (and that's a bad thing.)

I played on 360. Graphics are atrocious, and game-play feels flimsy and pointless.

I am disappointed, but I got a bad feeling about this game when details started coming out.
"Think like a general, fight like a spartan!" Lol, shut up, Bioware.
"Think like 12 year old, press A button until everything's dead."

Whatever, it's liberating not to care anymore. I definitely won't be picking this up. Sellouts.

How is manually pressing the A button really any different then having it do it for u? The effect is pretty much the same. Not too mention both ways are optional <_<.

While I haven't had a chance to play it on my home PC [my little laptop did its best] I want to give Bioware mega props for the demo. I am very excited about DA next month. To comment on a few points, the first thing that really impressed me is the graphical changes. While I feel that DA:O really had the BG vibe to it, I think your direction with DA2 really has given it a life all it's own. The graphical style is fantastic and I like what you folks have done with it.

The pace of combat felt alot more fluid as well, in addition to appreciating the clean-up of animations and the handy little additions like closers.

My only minor concern atm is based on the skill trees. I'm guessing we'll see more and more as we dig in, but going archery for example basically was "here's 4 skills total" and I had no idea what is in store, specialty wise, etc. It's a minor worry mind you - I really enjoyed every build I've done so far.

Looking forward to the 8th! Woo!

My Feedback: As a novice player, DA 2 is terrible. The first thing that really ticks me off about these video games is the teeny tiny wording that you can't read. Make the printing much bigger and very plan to see, especially for us people with poor eyesight. Next: I was a Male Mage and I couldn't get the controls to respond to what I was trying to do. I keep trying to heal myself, would hit the button to take a potion, it would not respond and I would die before he would drink it. I couldn't change the difficulty to casual. It was to hard for me. I only had 2 spells to use...Fireball and Mind Blast. Mind Blast took too long to regenerate. We were overrun with DarkSpawn before we could kill them-at the top of the first hill. Before that it was real easy, then suddenly turned into overwhelmingly difficult. Maybe I have to start over and get Cone of Cold or something instead. But, my overall impression is not favorable. Mainly: Can't read the dang thing, and It is not novice friendly. Let's keep it simple, not too complicated. I just want to have fun and adventure and role play, and battle simply, not try to get my PHD in Physics at Nasa.

I could see a problem with manual attacks after a while..but then auto-attack will be a feature all versions at retail and with that on I just found the combat to be a faster version of origins.

Which I say was needed to begin with.

I haven't finished the demo yet (it crashed), but my impression so far is that Bioware has outdone itself. I love the art style and the gameplay is fresh and exciting. It's a pleasure to play! Congratulations, Bioware, you should be proud; looks like you've added another great game to your name.

And I love that it's an evolution of the first DA, not just a rehash.

Yeah, flippant. And I mean, I guess if you think of it in the context of, "the middle choice is always supposed to be the flippant choice, so what exactly were you expecting when you chose it?", you could argue that it fits... but I thought they said they differentiated the charming tone from the comedy mask tone specifically to avoid being inappropriately flippant in situations like this.

Also, tweaking the graphics in the demo was wierd. I couldnt ever get full AA on, unless i ran dx9 and in medium mode. When I swapped to dx11, AA was turned off. Seems to be a feature of the demo. I like how I was able to run DAO maxed out with no lag at all and all the feature adjustments in the graphics were simple.

So far, i like the rogue. I played the warrior, the rogue was so fast and cool. I didnt like the rogue much in the first game, too slow. But here, she's really fast. Nice improvment.

The only thing so far that im kinda griping about and I hope they chance is the emotion. Not much in the demo. I was hoping a more heart felt moment with hawke and his/her brother when he died. No matter what choice you picked, she really didnt seem too depressed about it. She seemed more sad about the death of the templar....

The only real reason I wanted to play the demo was because I wanted to see how the combat system worked.

Tactics slots plays a very important role in making micro-managment on the battlefield a much simpler task. I've always been used to playing Starcraft so I like being able to plan things as I go. Playing as a Rogue took some getting used to with timing of the camera changes in the Backstab skill, but it was definitely key in manuvering around enemies and picking them off.

The Pause function was ok if you need to see how far the enemies are from you if you don't like relying on the map.

---

Small bugs I noticed:

I was playing on the Low texture quality setting and oddly that fixed the overwhelming music/sfx over speech sound bug I had during my first playtest.

The specs on Bethany were REALLY cranked up in the first couple scenes we see her in but she was normal after that.

Umm I dont know what some of you guys are talking about. Auto attack was enabled for me on the pc. You had to choose a new target every time one died, but that is a given for me anyway as I take out enemies in a certain order depending on the situation.

Yeah, it's off for console versions right now.

I've now finished playthroughs with each of the combat builds (Mage, DW, Archery, TH, S&S)

Let me just say i really appreciate the effort that has obviously gone into building each of these classes and the overall feel i get as a result.

DW: combat is rapid, dynamic and i'm loving the tactical mobility that the combination of evade, backstab and the other applicable tallents give me. I feel the tremendous, ability driven lethality i have, particularly once tallents like twin fangs come into play. The price i paid for that mobility and short, sharp lethality was evident fragility and weak standard attacks. As a DW rogue i forsee having to rapidly engage/dissengage from fights lest the lighter armour and smaller healthbar doom me..the fact i benifit little from engaging with standard attacks (compared to the old modus opperandi of continuous, sustained backstabs) is simply another reason for me to dart from combat to combat.

There are some small couterintuitive factors like being hit by ogre charge while i could have sword i had dissapeared and should be behind them, but althogether solid.

Archer Rogues just feel so much better. Addmittedly the best feel i got was from playig as Varic.

The sound and bolt speed play a big part here psychologically. The grunty sound of that crossbow makes me feel like i'm firing something lethal rather than cotton padded sticks floating through the air at impossibly slow speeds. The damage is fearsome and the active abilities really give the ranged rogue a way of asserting their authority on the battlefield in a way only mages could previously asspire to.

Speaking of mages, i appreciate their redesign. They are fragile, but feel far better up close now. Their crowd control ability (with fireball, cone of cold and inferno) continues to be amazing but their single target DPS against boss characters is minimal enough and gives other classes a chance to shine.

Observation though, what on earth happened to my heal monkey? The demo didn't really give us a good chance to play with a true support mage as heal has a cooldown so long as to make it a once per combat deal and the other buffs open to us were minimal.

In any case, the mage feels solid.

And one point about the Mage AI that annoyed me and forced me to micromanage. Mages are keen to fire off their fireballs ASAP even as enemies are closing. Problem is, Bethany seems unfamiliar with the concept of deflection shooting or leading her targets and as a result tends to fire off her big spell and hit nada during the opening seconds of an encounter. Now with propper micro this is not an issue (particularly in the latter half of the demo) but it is still annoying to switch to Bethany mid combat and find she exhausted her cool-down liquifying a clump of sand.

Both classes of warriors play well and i look forward to taking one through the main game. The prologue powered Zwei-Hander feels like a freaking juggernaught of destruction with whirlwind and other abilities being tremendous fun in a way akin to the "massacre" in DAO:A. The heavy armour and health give you that ability to wade in and while the lack of damaging abilities (once you de-level) is annoying, the S&S does well enough at shield bashing and hacking its way to victory.

I do think that class synergy has been taken to a new level however. I see the real potential of cross class combos and even in the demo the combined beat down can be impressive.

I recall the Bethany Varic combo (Flask->inferno->explosive bolt->fireball->rain of arrows->cone of cold-> yeah...they're dead.)

I forsee using a party built around a S&S Hawke backed by a pair of mages and either Isabella or Varic depending on the circumstances. Obviously i could play around with that a little and, for old times sake, i'm sure i could play the tripple mage Warrior combo if i didn't care about chests but i do forsee a class synergy that exceeds DAO.

Thanks for the demo Bioware, i await the finished product with anticipation.
