my download started around 400kb/s.. jumped right up to 3mb/s though.

Same here.... I was at 450 Kb/sec, now at 220 Kb/sec... looks like they took away download capacity to have some capacity left for the sites themselves. Why not have a number of different servers worldwide to spread the load and keep it fast?
