3. If this demo really represents what the game will be like I am sorry I pre-ordered it back in December. I am guessing a lot of people will feel the same. I was REALLY looking forward to DA II coming out on the 8th, but now - I really don't care.

Sorry for the harsh criticism. But that is how I feel.

Actually, from the polls we've had, very few have such a negative reaction. Most are very positive.

Really?  Based on what? You can do essentially nothing in the demo. If the demo was designed to entice people to buy, it fails badly. I think most origins players will eventually buy as a matter of course but I doubt the demo would encourage anyone to buy based on what they can do within it.

Surely a demo should show what can be done in the actual game - change armor for the stuff you pick up? NOPE
Weapons? NOPE, even 1 change of look for a character? NOPE make a choice that offers a different result? NOPE Ah but you can change your characters name. You can follow 1 path only click some buttons that even allows my 11 yr old to win first try and watch lots and lots of cutscenes.

A near 2Gig download that does NOTHING to demonstrate what could be a very good game. It does show some pretty movies though.

Sadly, I agree. Before I played the demo I was feeling pretty bad that I didn't pre-order the signature edition in time, unfortunately that is no longer the case. Nevertheless I hope the previous posters were right when they said that the demo was an old version and that the retail version will be much better, although one would think that a company releasing a demo would include some enticing parts within their games to attract more potential buyers.
I remember a few weeks before DA:O got out we could dload a character editor to mess around with how we wanted our protagonist to look like and then import that character into DA:O, didn't exactly see why that option was disabled with the demo.
Making it more fast-paced to further engage the player in DA2's combat is cool I guess, but I don't know if it's just me but it feels yet a bit stale when fighting due to your skills still being in cooldown and reduced to auto-atk.
Still, glad to hear that a fair amount of others enjoyed it at least even if I don't think this was the best way to promote DA2.

Wow. I just waiting five hours for it to download I'm happy I did. Even though I wish it was a little longer. This demo is a great teaser! I know the feel of the game and what to expect with the new leveling up and combat system. I like the changes and though I love Dragon Age Origins I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy Dragon Age II far more. The graphics are good exceptionally for a Demo. Though the combat system is new and I don't fully understand how to use all the skills yet, I am very happy with the changes. What I think people don't understand is that in this industry everything moves quickly. Developers change things for different reason: if it's because they are trying to improve or fix what might have not worked in the first game or maybe with a changing and picking customer base they have to always be innovative and make it new and fresh. I am excited and look forward to playing this game on my Xbox.

Anyone else found the voices a bit horrible?

For example the mourning mother...

God i just couldn't feel the grief!

Whereas the dying templar was a sad moment...

DA:O was one of the games that actually played with your emotions throughout the whole game. Very disappointed with the demo. Making the combat system too fast just to create a balance between a pc and a console was a very weak strategy and a risky step EA & Bioware took.

Maybe it's just me but I would of loved an upgrade like awakening from origins. New talents, new specializations, weapons, worlds but of course with much more depth and devotion. But to actually change the game play as a whole? I just don't get it.

I feel your pain. I for one won't be buying it even though I preordered it. Better to lose $10 as appose to $70. Sadly though, I don't think Bioware or EA cares at all about what fans of DAO want and who are disappointed in what Dragon Age 2 represents. The point is both Bioware and EA are about their creative rights and care little of what the fans think. They are assuming that you will buy it anyway: and, many people will. As for me, there are a lot of things wrong with Dragon Age 2's game play that I don't appreciate. Hopefully, down the line some mooders will change all that. We'll just have to wait and see. I know I wait at least a year before I consider buying it.

i heard there will be no Mods possibility with DA 2...
If this is the case, then we can all forget a good game.

I hope there are mods too (as DAO was great also for all the good mods out there).

I don't know about horrible, exactly, but they weren't the usual Bioware standard. My biggest gripe with them was at the end of the demo, where their voices echo, and said echoes just cut off before they've finished...echoing. Very badly done.

I see there's a good possibility the demo is from an older version? There is still hope then. I really hope it doesn't accurately reflect the final game, because if it does, it may be the first Bioware game I don't get.

SPOILERS

My main problems with the demo (PS3 version) were: freezing in the middle fights, or even cutscenes, in order to load; at least one animation (his walk) that skips frames; right after the son died, the mother suddenly reverted to that unrigged state; at one point I chose one dialogue option and the game decided "nah, I'm going to say THIS instead..."; Izabella's chin appeared not to be affected by the facial rigging in a few scenes; the npc cahracters (the mother and the templar) would disappear and then suddenly reappear in front of me.

Those, I believe are the only technical things I can think of, and I'll assume they will be sorted in the final game. Otherwise, I didn't particularly like how rushed it all felt (though I think the demo probably skipped through it a lot more than the actual game will).

Opinion seems very divided on this. I don't know anyone who liked the demo, and as I said, if it is accurately representative of the final game, I'm not interested.

Still, nothing can be done now; we'll just have to wait and see. I think it was an unwise move to release a demo like this.

The Demo left a lot to be desired and like others have said I hope its from an earlier version. It did feel rushed, but I do hope that is just part of the Demo... I would spend hours playing DA and I hope to be able to do it again with DAII

I think the game is amazing! The combat feels better and the graphics are awesome! I also think that Bioware did a good thing in kind of making how you actually fight, instead of selecting the action and then the character does it, you do it this time around:) My brother who didnt like Origins because he likes to control the character wants to play DA2 because of this. I play on 360 so its a vast improvement from Origins I think.

I am unsure how anyone can say the graphics are 'awesome'. Are we talking about the same game? The graphics are, frankly, awful. Just look at the Witcher 2 or even ME2. Big RPGs with very good graphics. I don't understand why they are so bad in DA. They are good enough though. Not so bad as to take away from the experience, but certainly not 'awesome' in my opinion.

So, anyone know why the number of downloads skyrocketed over the past few hours? When I last checked around midnight est (12 hours ago), it was arounf 0.47 mil, and seemed to be slowing down. Now, its up to 0.8 mil. Was it just all the people waiting for the servers to clear up a bit?

Nope but i believe there would be some kind of data sending back to the server n confirming that your account did complete the demo. I'm sure you will get the reward once you start your official DA2 journey xD

I played the demo through to completion last night.  It took me about an hour.  I slept on it.  Here are my honest thoughts:

A lot of the press and reaction I've seen to the game have been about whether it is "Dragon Effect 2."  This has been followed up by sidesteps or denials by developers, fanboys, and those just anxious to play another Dragon Age.

In my opinion, the developers gutted the DA:O model for this game very early on.  After playing it last night, it's completely disingenuous to deny that the Dragon Age series has now borrowed very heavily from Mass Effect.  It's about more than just the dialogue wheel too.  The combat scripting is obviously Mass Effect: no real exploration, just move from battle point to battle point on a set map, culminating in a mini-boss fight, ending with some dialogue, which finishes with a "choice" dialogue wheel.  Rinse and repeat.

Other similarities are obvious too.  The camera angles and action points mimic Mass Effect heavily.  Combat is not complex in the slightest, and despite this being simple combat scenarios in a demo, I don't feel like it's going to be: the action simply moves way too fast when unpaused.  There are hard limitations to the amount of complexity that can be required of the gamer when the action moves at that kind of pace.  I think Mass Effect does a great job with it, but it does not translate well into a Dragon Age setting.  Finally, while there's been a lot of talk about the improved graphics, I did not find them to be a selling point.  The Mass Effect graphics are by far superior, yet the same style appears watered down in Dragon Age 2.

Is all of this good or bad? There will be many different and legitimate points of view.  For myself, I'm very disappointed: this game isn't adding any layers of complexity that I would expect from a sequel.  It's rather changing the core mechanics to appeal to more "mainstream" gaming if I can call it that.  Aside from that, it's the exact same package of RPG material with a slick presentation.   I know that there will be fans of this change, and I even admit that the this style of combat in a medieval RPG setting is kind of amusing.  I just know that I am going to tire of it quickly because I've seen it before in the Mass Effect series.

Bottom line for me: this does not represent a step forward for Dragon Age.  It's not a step back, just a step sideways.  Nevertheless, it's a strange feeling because this is the first time I think Bioware really missed the target.  I'm still going to play it eventually.  However, as a longtime fan of Bioware games, it's very strange to say that I won't be buying this game until it goes on a good Steam sale.  I don't see where the value is on this one.

Edit: on a final note, think about it this way.  The Witcher 2 is due out soon after this one, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim later this year.  These are the main RPG competitors.  Based on the demo, does Dragon Age 2 surpass those on the RPG level?  From early looks of the other two, I think it's going to be very, very hard to answer yes to that question.

I, sadly, must agree with every point you brought up. Personally I don't think NEAR so much should have been changed, and pretty much taking Grey Wardens out the equation was VERY disappointing. But, like you, i'm still going to play it.

Just a couple of things that I also noticed. I lucked out and my friends downloaded the PS3 version and I play PC. For PC users especially, the controlling of the characters was really nice in DA:O where it was so-so for PS3. DA2 seems aimed more at gaming systems and away from the PC direction.

I did like the basic graphics as they are a small step up from DA:O, they don't make up for the other things like the conversation wheel on the PS3 while the PC it didn't seem to have an effect since you can just use your mouse to click on the right one, pretty much like using the lines before.

Also make sure you have the latest software upgrades before you go to play, while this wont stop the start/stop issues, it will help some with how fast they load.

At this point without playing the full game. I am thinking this falls into 3.5/5 star rating for both gaming platforms.

I would have been more impressed if they had kept the old engine, but improved the graphics. I think they were trying for the moon and got Apollo 13. Damaged but will get the job done by the end.
