Mine crashed several times in the same places where you all have mentioned (character creation) and to be honest, I almost gave up. However, I was able to fool around with the settings a bit (directX 11 on) and it appears to work fine now.
Still, one would think that a "demo" would be rather polished and help to advertise the quality of the game. For BioWare, I assume this may have been a PR nightmare.
Usually Demos are based on earlier builds of the game. I think many people were able to play and get the gist of the combat and interaction, which is the point of the demo. I wouldn't think it is a PR disaster by any stretch.

Well I don't agree that we're splitting hairs. It's more the case that we are familiar with the DX API and its capabilities. What DX 11 players are being offered can be similarly rendered using different algorithms in DX 9.c. There are differences in performance and aesthetic etc etc but the argument is valid. DX 9.c is capable of far more than what is being delivered. Limiting graphic settings using arbitrary rules is unfair and borders on cartel behaviour.
"Cartel" behavior?? Seriously? Dude, that's funny. A bit extreme, but funny. How do you know what they limited and what they didnt? And if they did...that's unfair according to who's rules?
I'm Glad it made you chuckle, nothing wrong with that. Texture packs are limited as far as I can tell -- I tried overriding the config but it keeps resetting the pack to 0, AF is limited -- on medium the option is faded out, motion blur and depth of field can all be implemented in DX 9.c so I would class those as having been limited too.
I'm sure it wouldn't qualify as being unfair by EA's rules and I doubt any hardware manufacturer would be overly concerned by new purchases either. It would be unfair if it was organised behaviour -- which little old me stands no chance of proving. Also EA has a track record with BSing about system requirements (Crysis). But if you think that multi billion dollar industries do not cooperate together then I have some shocking news for you. They do: frequently. MS still has outstanding law suits for anticompetitive behaviour, Airlines have been fined for operating as cartels, holiday companies too. In fact it is quite common behaviour among large industries, which is why we have external authorities for consumers to take grievances to.
Any way this has all been OT so I'll drop the subject here. Feel free to respond but this is my last word about it in this thread.

The texture quality and AA and AF are the biggest graphical advantages that PCs have over consoles.

Have a quad core and windows XP SP3 with 3GB 800mhz DDR 2 RAM. Here is what it looks like when it hangs.
http://postimage.org/image/9ly1zoec/
The game is still active and I am able to go to the menus and all but it seems the characters stay stuck in the game world along with the loading screen. The character portraits are also all fuzzled but I am able to select them like if I was in the game world.
Possible causes could be that I ran too fast to the chantry while Isabela was talking after the courtyard fight and the game did not load the section correctly and got stuck in a loop.

Just to make things even more confussing, playing in windowed mode doesn't help either. Mine crashed in both fullscreen and windowed mode after pressing the Play button. Only playing with direct x9 and average details settings i was able to play through the demo.
As long i read so far, i see that the people that reported crash issue have different hardware, AMD or Intel, ATI or Nvidia seems not to be the core problem, still the windows 7 64bit seems to be a constant. Might it be something related to 64 bit systems?

Nope...no crashes for me in Win 7 x64.
I think the issues are mostly related to people using graphics settings other than what Bioware suggested. They said clearly to turn off Vsync and Anti Aliasing as well as run at DX9 at medium settings. Any other settings and your mileage varies.

First VM was a Win7 64Bit / 8GB Ram / 8 Cores. The Demo crashed with every suggested fix. Textures where flickering
Tried a XP Pro 32Bit / 3 GB Ram / 2 Cores VM next. This time everything went nice (no crashes). Only the dialog sound volume was very low.
Very Nice. I'm looking forward to the final game. The only thing I don't like is the Interface. It looks so... well... it looks a bit poor.

Secondly, update your DirectX to the most recent one and also update your graphicscard-driver.../../../../images/forum/emoticons/andy.png
Thirdly,
Configure the demo first, in the start-pop-up, choose "configure",
Disable v-sync, run on medium graphics setting, choose any
AA(Anti-aliasing) you want because it hasn´t been a problem for me in
any of my 8 playthroughs.
-This demo is designed to run on medium settings, nothing else. If you want the real deal, wait until the game is released with ALL the "bells and whistles"(AKA higher settings). And for the love of GOD, play only with DX9, not DX11 that´s not implemented in this demo.
hope it helps someone........./../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png

Win7 x64, AMD Phenom II x6 1035t (2.6ghz @ 6 cores), 8gb 1333mhz ram, Radeon HD 5750 1gb
Ran extremely smooth the whole way through!
The only thing I've done differently than what I've read in this thread is I ran the DXSETUP (C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age 2 Demo\\redist\\DirectX) before I played the game to fix my missing .dll problem. Then like I said, cranked up the graphics (really just to see it) and it worked fine.
Good luck guys!

The game crashes after I hit the start game button.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit, i7 3 ghx, ATI 6870 video, 8 gigs ram.
I have tried in both DX11 and DX9 with both high and lowered settings.
I got past this point once, and it crashed after talking to the Witch of the Wild.

For what it's worth I got it to work and played through the whole demo.
Here are my settings.
1680 by 1050
Graphics Detail Medium
Anti-Aliasing off
DirectX 9
Play in full screen mode
Vertical Sync Off
The is Windows 7 64 bit.
I ran it in XP compatibly mode
But this is the thing that seemed to make the difference.
I selected Run As Administrator when I started the game, and it ran all the way through for the first time.
I hope this works for some others as well.

I just played through the demo with absolutely everything cranked up as high as it would go without a single hang (except for the missing dll, but that was an easy fix). Ran in dx9 mode, since my radeon hd 5750 won't do dx11...
