I've had the same problem, I crashed just now when I try to continue from the character create screen.

Win 7 64, ATI 5850

Hopefully this is something they are in the process of patching because I never had one hiccup
or crash in DA:O.

Lucky you with Origins :)

I have the same card as you - turning off v-sync and aa worked for me (dx9 at very high detail)

Had the problem (crash at Character Creation) at medium settings DX9, Windows7 64bit. Solved by switching to DX11 and high settings. Using Nvidia card.

Win7x64, Core2Duo 6400, 4g DDR2, HD5850:

1. Crash - 1680x1050 resolution, Very High, AA 4x, VSync on, DX11, female rogue: CtD when moving up the path after the first fight with the whole family after mothers "estate" line about Kirkwall.

2. Crash - 1280x800 resolution, High, AA4x, Vsync on, DX9, female warrior: CtD when the first ogre kill sequence was supposed to start

3. Crash - 1280x800 resolution, Medium, AA4x, Vsync on, DX9, female mage: CtD after accepting appearance/name etc.

Also had the d3dx9_43.dll error message after installation, fixed by starting DX setup from the DA2 demo folder.

Gotta say, I'm disappointed. The demo was a lot of fun so far, but with the save option disabled and the frequent crashes, it's just not playable.

edit: After turning off VSync, I've had no more crashes.

I had some crashes and a blue screen as well, which was related to my ATI drivers.  I have 2 5870's in Crossfire and something just wasn't right with both cards running.  I disabled Crossfire and that seemed to fix the issues I was having.

Folks posting crash info may want to post some hardware specs and which drivers (ATI 11.2, for instance)

Also...they did say the demo was optimized for medium settings, no vsync, and DX9. Make sure you read through the suggestions in the README file that comes with the demo.

The only safe ATI driver to use right now is 10.11 and 10.10e hotfix driver. 11.1 and 11.2 have a severe gpu issue that causes the gpu to go in a state of 99% usage when all you are doing is messing around in desktop or browsing the web and it WILL NOT throttle down unless you restart the comp.

As for me, i'm crashing in dx9 and dx11 with vsync disabled using a 5970.

I also have a Radeon 5870.

I switched to DX9 and disabled Vsync. That allowed me to finish the demo, in addition to greatly reducing load speed and those annoying pauses in the conversations.

Hope the full game works better with DX11...

Im using the latest drivers and that has never happend to me that my GPU's use 99% for being idle.

are you constantly monitoring it? If not you wouldn't notice it and your card would overheat.

Here's the link, its happening to a lot of people.

Make sure you monitor it constantly with msi afterburner or something. I'm sure its happening to people and they don't even realize it.

Thats really really odd.

Ive been using GPU-Z, MSI Afterburner and CCC after the drivers for my overclock and they never whent over 75'C and only 99% during games.

But sure I will keep a look out!

Thanks for the heads up

Same issue still, even ran as ADMIN and still crashed on Character Creator.

GTX 580 7 64 bit, running as admin.. updated drivers and even installed dx9...gonna try ONE more time, this is my 8th attempt, different settings each time. With no AA, and As admin, and vsync off.

I do have to say even on low settings the graphics and gameplay so far are kick ass bad ass the best i've seen yet.

Specs:
1600*900 resolution
GFX: nvidia 240m
CPU: Intel Core i3 2.13 GHz (2 cores)
RAM: 4 GB
Win 7 64 bit

Running on Medium settings, DX9, no AA. Was crashing at character select with AA at 2, now crashing at seemingly random points in the game. Loading in between dialog lines during cutscenes is also a problem.

The demo isn't crashing for me during gameplay or after character
creation screen(all maxed out 1280x1024) but I can confirm DA2 crashes
if you switch tabs.

My system (stock settings nothing overclocked):

Asrock 870 Extreme3 (P1.60)

AMD Phenom II X4 @ 3.2Ghz

Radeon HD 6850 (Catalyst 11.2)

8GB Corsair DDR3-1333 @ 666Mhz

Win7 64bit (Build 7601 -> Service Pack 1)

I also had the crash-when-you-click-start-from-character-screen issue. Tried AA/no-AA, DX9/11, Low and Very High. After about 7 tries, all with the same crash, I downloaded the ATI 11.2 Drivers (5870 card) and turned the VSync off. Tried with DX9 on Low (1920x1200 res). That worked!

So... if VSync is causing the problems -- WTF was it defaulted to "on"?

As an aside, I didn't really notice much of a difference between Low and Very High. But things seemed a bit more choppy with the VSync off.

Anyway, made it the end of the demo. Finally.

I might as well post this here too:-

After trying to play the new demo I've come across some horrendous crashing issues. The game runs fairly smoothly when it's running, but I've tried to play it twice and both times had not only crashes, but crashes that needed the restarting of my entire system. The first time the graphics and clours went all strange during the second wave of darkspawn and my whole system had to be restarted (I couldn't alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete my way out at all, and my whole system froze now and then an chugged, not letting me exit the game). When I restarted and tried again, I had a weird similar glitch when fighting the ogre, and it minimized the game twice, but when it went back it was fine. I continued on and then the graphics glitched again, and it crashed out my entire display drivers with a warning saying as much, locking up the game itself and reducing my system to 640x480 with only 8 colours.

System Specs are as follows:-

Processor: Intel® Pentium® D CPU 3.00GHz
Memory: 2GB
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS
Driver: 182.08
Windows: XP Service Pack 3
Direct X: 9c

It almost always is. I've had a number of issues with games related to it, so it was the first thing I switched off after the demo crashed on me. Hasn't happened since.
