Hi,
I just got ME1 and I am a ME noob.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a class or build for a first timer.
I played a little so far as an Infiltrator but honestly I don't know what I am doing other than it seems I can only use pistols/snipers and wear light armor and hack a little.
Thanks for your advice.
ME1 first timer - class/build suggestion?

My suggestion is to start out as a soldier. When playing as a soldier you unlock the weapon achievements that allow other classes to use other weapons.

Have a play around on there and check out the descriptions of the different powers. Then you can plan out how you wanna level up and what you think will suit your playstyle.

for the most straightforward game play, use the soldier.

Soldier is fun. Avoid biotics - they are way overpowered and can make the game a little silly.

I would actually suggest starting as a sentinel as you get tech, biotics, and of course a handgun. It's an extremely balanced class, and it does well in almost all situations.
Other than that, soldier is the default and is probably the easiest class to play as. Vanguards are nice too, and infiltrators are amazing, but tricky if you're not a good sharp-shooter.
Adepts are really strong, but because they're mostly ability-based they can be difficult too.
I've actually never played as an engineer, I realise, and I shall go do so immediately.

soldier for the weapon achievements, also, I highly recommend you keep Garrus, Tali, or Kaidan with you at all times so as to not miss out on any upgrades

I'd suggest starting as anything but a Soldier, myself. Use the awesome powers available to you, so go with Sentinel! It's probably the easiest class to play anyway, given that it has the best defences and potentially devastating offences too.

Oh wait you're talking about ME1... I'd still say Sentinel, but ignore what I said above about awesome defences

Soldier is the easiest class if you're just starting off and its very easy to augment with your teammates abilities. Be a soldier, unlock the weapon achievements, activates them for your other classes. You'll want to play the first game multiple times anyways!

Assault rifle adepts are pretty nice, but singularity vanguards are ridiculous

Discussions on specific builds and tactics should probably go to the appropriate forum. If you clikc that link though, and then next to each class click "guide" that should get you started. Beginning with a soldier is a nice way to ease into the game, but not the only way of course. I started with adept, I think.

I've always preferred soldiers and infiltrators. Both focus on the use of conventional weapons, which is faster paced and more fun. When using heavy biotics, I find that I am pausing the action a lot bringing up my tactics screen. Yes, I know I can hotkey powers, but I have to take my fingers off the movement keys to reach up to the number keys.
