I was having the same problem and went into the properties of the installer, clicked on the Compatibility tab, checked the run as admin box, double clicked the installer and about 5 minutes later the installer popped up.

Hope that helps someone.

I downloaded the game from the DA2 site just fine, but I had a LOT of troubles installing it the first few times. The first few times, I left it for HALF AN HOUR each time to try and see if it made a difference, the second time, it eventually came up with the 16 bit message. The third time, I ran it as admin and it came up with the message about too many 16 bit programs running again.

In pure anger and frustration, I restarted, unhooked the PC from the internet and closed out of EVERYTHING, my messengers, my work, my side bar... and after a 15 minute wait, it is finally installing now.

Can someone PLEASE explain the 16 bit programs thing though? I hope to the Maker I WON'T have to repeat the whole process again when I am trying to install the actual game, or worse, play it.

EDIT: And.... the demo won't run because it's missing a file, d3dx9_43.dlll

The hell, bioware?

Here is what I did (not sure which issue this fixes):
It told me when I tried to start the game that I was missing a dll thing. Some kind of d3x and so on. So I searched for it on my computer, found the 86x (the 64x didn't work), unpacked it and put it into bin folder in the installtion place. Did the same thing for d3x11 (the other was called something slightly different). And then for the D3DCOMPILER dll.

To summarize: I manually put stuff that was lacking in the bin folder in the installation folder. And it worked perfectly.

I get the same invalid popup that Arctucas posted on the last page. I tried downloading and installing the demo three times via the BioWare DA2 site. Each time took five hours of downloading and each time it failed to open (and gave me that message).

It is frustrating.

Windows 7 x64, Firefox (latest build).

I believe this is not an issue with the demo but as Devon stated a checksum and a windows verification. It took me more than five minutes for the installer to launch.

its obvious to me that all they care about is the download check for their "goal"..well if i dont get to play the demo i wont buy the game and im not willing to redownload with 10 klbs/sec from any site.they better find a solution or at least im done with this crap

edit:i found a solution: run as admin and the installer works

I had the same issue as the OP - what I wound up doing was going into the actual folder it got downloaded into and then opening it there. It took a long time between double-clicking and the installer finally launching - somewhere around five minutes or so. But if you try that and then let it sit for a while it will hopefully work.

Ironically, my firefox wasn't opening so fast and I was in a rush to start downloading the game so I opened the faster google chrome and quickly headed to the demo link. Had I known it was available for Steam I would have downloaded it there instead.

If you download the add in Fire download manager to your Firefox browser it will really help with the download times.

I downloaded as a torrent from Gamershell (and they have ordinary download too):

http://www.gamershel...oad_70000.shtml

Got a zip-packet, unpacked it and installed. Not a single problem. Perhaps this works better than BioWares own download. Worth to try anyway.

Just thought I'd point out the User Access Control (UAC) in Vista/Win7 has been known to cause long delays before running large executables. Assuming your download is complete and good, you could temporarily disable UAC which should run the installer straight away. Unless your anti-virus program also wants to check the installer before letting it run also.
