Hey guys,

I have looked over this thread and filed an issue with our programmers, they are looking into it as we speak.

Thank you

I look forward to sinking a lot of money (and time:whistle:) into Dragon Age II

Despite BioWare looking into it, I just can't seem to let this issue go. So I continued tinkering.

Today I removed all of the .dlls from the bin_ship folder. I attempted to run the game and it said physxcooking could not be found. So I added the cooking back in. Then it said it couldn't locate binkw32.dll, so I added that back in. Then it was looking for umbra32.dll. So I put that one back in and then it gave me the standard Error Initializing PhysX that's been the topic of this whole mess.

Still no progress. I'll be out of town til Sunday, so hopefully by the time I return it'll be solved or I'll at least have some fresh ideas, heh.

I have the very same problem!

My hardware fits the minimum requirements and shouldn't be a problem at all, my OS is Windows XP SP3, but all I can see is "error initialize physx".

What I did:
1) Updated all drivers relevant to the game: directx, my videocard drivers. That didn't help.
2) Installed a freshly new copy of Windows XP SP3 just in case, into a new logical partition, and installed all relevant drivers. It didn't help either, I get the same error.

As a last resort (if it's an XP problem, I know it's unlikely but still...), has anybody with this problem tried to run the game on Windows 7? Sadly I have trouble with installing Windows 7, since it will delete all stuff on my second HDD, and I can't afford to lose it. And it's too much to make a backup right now. I'm trying to degragment that drive now to shrink it and create a new partition for safe installation of Windows 7, but I'm not sure if I should risk it, since it's still possible to lose all data during the shrinkig process. I'd be grateful if anybody with less than 400gbs of important data could install Win7 and check.

Let's try to help each other, since I can't really hope that Bioware will fix this problem 100%, I'm a pessimist. And I guess I'll have to avoid buying the game outright and download it from somewhere to check if they fixed this problem first, unless they somehow make it known that they did.

We don't have that option in the current iteration of the Social Forum software.  You didn't say whether you were also fighting Microsoft and Intel and everyone else by holding onto a PC with an AGP video bus and AGP video card, and that is also true for the very last "me, too" additional comment in here.

Are both of you actually facing the EXACT SAME  situation?

Yes, it's AGP. So everybody in the thread has an AGP video bus and AGP videocard? That doesn't sound like a coincidence.

I hope the solution can be found in that case, because I really am not that rich enough in order to buy a whole new rig just because of an AGP video card that has a problem with one single game. There's no PCI support, so motherboard would have to be changed, and with it new RAM is needed, new processor, etc. Impossible. Ok prayers go to Bioware and any gaming god who watches the developent of this game :)

Are you ever going to confirm or deny the type of video bus and video card in your system?

Yes, it does appear that the problem is appearing on similar systems - single-core processors with Radeon AGP video cards.

I began wondering the other night if perhaps not a video card issue. I realize that the game's minimum's do call for at least a dual-core, and while I've never run into an issue running games with below-minimum processors, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps it's coded in such a way that the game divides certain tasks between processors. Say, for example, the PhysX process is trying to be run from a non-existant processing core at startup.

That doesn't seem logical to me, however. And I'll be the first to admit I'm not an expert at how multi-core processors work, but was just another random thought I had. If that's the case, I'd suppose, in the words of South's Park's Terrence "I guess you're up fart creek without a paddle."

Just to add my two cents. I am not a computer expert, but not a novice either. I am having the same PhysX problem. I have an old system and Radeon AGP card, but did not have any issue with DAO. Maybe if enough of us come forward with this problem, Bioware will respond. I have already pre-purchased DAO2 about 2 months ago. I can only hope and pray that this will not effect the main game itself....unfortunately, misery loves company and although I do not wish these issues on anyone, glad to see I am not alone.

Well if you check on page 2, one of the BioWare folks did say the issue was passed along and is being looked into so we should at least be on the board somewhere.

I know it would be easy for them to just say - yeah, you don't meet the minimum requirements so you're SOL, but I do hope that either the issue won't be in the full version or that they'll find a workaround for us.

Considering that I've been writing about and covering the Dragon Age franchise on Greywardens.com since last may and I put in my pre-order the second that they announced the Sig Edition, I do hope all the work and anticipation will end in me getting to play the game. Otherwise, at least, I have to convince my brother to trade me computers for a week or so so I can beat it, heh.

Steve,
I wondered if you wrote for GreyWardens. Love the site. If I figure something out, which I doubt, I will let you know to spread the word.....either way, keep up the good work on GW.com

I heard about this sse2 issue with Athlon XP, the rumour has it that Venetica won't run on those processors because they don't support sse2. But there can be other reasons. So far Venetica is the only game I came along that required sse2. Anyway, does DA2 actually require it, how are we supposed to know if it's true? I'd like to ask developers directly, as such things never get posted in system requirements.

Hmmm, interesting points folks. I really hope that this is only a demo issue.
But yes, I do run an Athlon XP 2700+

What about others, do you have Athlon XP processors, too?

I think it can be fixed if the problem is sse2, by rewriting the code that uses it to avoid using it.

And another one that wont run coz of sse2 is Dawn of War II for example (there is no fix to that AFAIK).
So if DA2 requires sse2 we are pretty much fu©ked, coz no fix will change that - it'd require the change in the architecture itself :) ...to my knowledge that is.
