Thanks RaenImrahl. Playing rock bottom has me at about 30 FPS in the intro battle. That seems low? Don't people generally want something higher than that for this sort of game?
Any suggestions for an optimization guide or program? Or maybe I'll just play this on the 360 or PS3. I don't want to buy the PC version if there is a reasonable chance it won't run well on my machine.
Dfferent settings for the demo, the results

Given how the game producers are touting DA2's uniformity across all platforms, the 360 or PS3 option may be a good one in your case. Since the demo is out for those, too, I'd be interested to hear your take on them versus your PC.
As far as tweaking goes, besides the obvious stuff, like doing a clean install of drivers, making sure Windows update is updated, and not multitasking during gameplay, there are some other things to look at. Check out this post on the Origins PC Tech forum... look at the sections towards the middle on game play issues and system maintenance... and especially the stuff about the Windows pagefile. Good luck!

Thanks. Drivers and OS are up to date. I'll work though the material you linked to. Much appreciated.
I've played the demo on all three platforms. Textures look far more crisp on the PC, which is no surprise. I think the interface on the consoles works very well. Playing as an archer, I find the consoles actually easier, as you can't miss-click and run up next to the target you were trying to shoot. Given my problems with my PC, it is also not surprising that the consoles run more smoothly.

Did lots of stuff. Nothing helped. Giving up. Thanks for compiling that extensive guide though,

in a similar boat my friend, getting 15 fps on a macbook pro running bootcamp (win7) with 2.2ghz and 2gb ram, using a Geforce9400M GPU. pretty bad. it doesn't do the game justice. and this is on the lowest settings.
