Yeah, archery is really awesome right now.
I'm definitely going rogue first now (was planning to make a warrior before), but I'm having difficulty deciding on archery versus melee now.
Both are cool, but archery seems like it has huge utility and still great damage.
Probably going to dual wield first though, it's just too cool to jump out of the way of that ogre when he switches his attention to you.

Dex raises crit chance, Magic raises resistance... Rogue wins DPS-wise.
Different types of damage. All people here complaining about Varric + Archer being overpowered with two Rain of Arrows, I wonder what they will do if they had the possibility of trying 2 mages with Firestorm.
The demo shows only very easy encounters, with mostly critters, only 1-2 strong enemies in the groups, and 3/4 normal enemies only in 2 instances. More, if you go with 2 archers you will have problems with aggro, since encounters enclude more spawns this time around, and archers are squishy as mages (since dex doesn't add to defense this time).
Shinimas wrote...
Every shot staggers and AA is overall greater than the Mage's.
Not true. It depends on the force behind the blow. Since in the demo you encounter mostly critters it seems arrows staggers or knockdown everything, but I really doubt it works this way since if you hit a more powerful enemy (as normal either) you don't stagger them if not in rare cases. I think there's an attribute that increase force (or maybe certain abilities or both, don't remeber, I'm only certain that the warrior is adept at it in fact).
DA2 includes a calculation for the force of the blow to have staggers/knockdown. Bows have a large force behind them, but the rogue (differently from the warrior) usually doesn't increase this force via attributes/abilities as the warrior does. So with higher level enemies I doubt things will get staggered easily.
Shinimas wrote...
Abilities seem to deal more damage.
I think they are balanced within the scope of the class role. Powerful yes (as it is every class in DA2 if properly used), but not overpowerd. Archery MUST be a DPS tree to be powerful in an CRPG, or many games has shown that on the contrary it becomes a waste, more so the higher the levels.
Archers can be overpowered only depending on certain situations, but this can be said for every class in DA2. In the demo for the configuration of the encounters they can be, but that's only a part of the whole. More, you judge 2 archers together in an encounter that has little spawn points and aggro is easy to control. It's all another story having an archer only, or also having two with more spawn points and/or more powerful enemies coming from different sides. In this situation all changes and what can seem overpowered in reality is not.
And I'm neither talking about nightmare difficulty. Things must be seen in the FULL context. And anyway, either if it really was overpowered, it's not the same as Awakening. This time around if you are, indeed, overpowered, you are so using abilities instead of auto-attacking all the time; all another thing.

In the end of the day, archers are WAY better than ever before. I think I'll be a sword and shielder first, but once I beat the game and know where all the hard fights are and what not, I'll go through as an archer rogue.

Just tried an archer Rogue. It was fun, almost relaxing, but probably won't be my first choice.

I love how the archer rogue can be so dominant without attracting too much attention and aggro.
Although there was one point where the Ogre was like, "YOU!" and started going after me like a madman. lol
I was like, "COME ON AVELINE, WHAT THE HELL!?"

I like it very much. Unlike the mage class where I went 2-1 magic and willpower and felt overpowered. For me using archery was not overpowered for the most part. I went pure dex in the demo. The only time i did feel a bit overpowered was when me and Varric preformed that ability that rains arrows down at the same time. That skill obliterated the enemies very quick, quicker than two fireballs if I am not mistaken. The pacing is good a slight quicker shot firing I think would be better. Overall this archery > DA:O

I try to make the dexterity and cunning scores the same.

I was very pleased with archery, and it will be my second character.
I've already set things in mind for what I want. First time through, I will be using Varric, Isabella, and Bethany, playing as a sword and boarder. Second time through, Sebastian, Aveline, and then the personality of Anders or Fenris will decide between them, while I play an archer.

Archery just sucked in general, especially if you got swarmed.
But now, you've got knock back arrows that can create some space.
Then there's evade, which will get you some space as well.
You've got your AOE attacks and the regular knockback from normal attacks.
So enemies getting in your face shouldn't be as big a problem, especially if there's a tank involved.

I'm honestly expecting it to get nerfed in a patch, but we'll see. Based on this thread, I tried it out and have to admit I loved it. I still think I'm doing mage my first play through just for the effects, but... Bursting Arrow plus Hail of Arrows utterly decimated Hayder's mooks in the demo's final battle. And the knock-back effect of hitting an enemy? Awesome sauce.

I loved playing as an archer(though it seems quite OP).We will see once the game is there.
A nerf might be necessary later.

It's fun that's for sure. The fact that people says it's overpowered is because it's a demo. I also found the magic to be OP but like a said it's a demo. They are so posed to be easy it will all be balanced by the time the game come out.

I tried a mage during the demo, but I died at the Ogre and decided to not continue. I was never a fan of using a mage myself.
I was all alone against like 8 darkspawn and the Ogre at half health. Took down like 5-6 of the darkspawn, needed to heal, but got knocked down. Didn't have enough time once I got up to use a healing potion.
With Archer Rogues, I NEVER have a problem. With Sword and Shield Warriors, SAME.

Judging from the demo Archer is insanely powerful. I only needed a few automated hits with my arrows to kill the common darkspawn whereas warriors/rogues need multiple automated attacks. Also pinning shot does HUGE damage. Will probably check it out in the full game.

Left Origins as a Spirit Warrior Dual-Wielding death machine with the intention of picking up a Two-Handed death machine... but seriously, I much prefer Dual-Wielding and the Rogue is completly awesome.
I'm sold.

I was a self-admitted naysayer after the pains of archers in Origins, but after playing the DA2 demo and giving it a whirl I must say I'm a convert. It looks like my first Hawke will not be a mage or dual dagger rogue...but an archery rogue. And proud of it.

I really like archery rogues, but I was not really dazzled by it in the demo like I was with the dagger play.

It's good that archery is viable in the game, but as others said it's overpowered as hell. I think I saw the reason for that; in the demo, you can pick up items on dead refugees. Once, I found a bow, but just moused over it without picking it up, and a window with it's properties apeared. The bow was Filmsy something (so weak) and did 45 physical damage. For reference, Bethany's staff did 18 fire damage and Hawke's bow was identical to the one on the ground. Archers do 3 times as much damage with physical attacks alone, and one Pinning Shot is enough to cause a darkspawn to burst open like if it just swallowed a grenade (I thought the exploding ennemies were limited to the exagerated parts? bah)
Well, it's better off overpowered than gimped because at least you can choose to use it without feeling like you are weakening yourself, but it's possible it was also toned down if the demo is from an old build. I still look to forward to playing an archer in my second run.
