Is Lothering on Mars now?

So I completed the DA2 demo. Yay for me. I could nitpick about how things have changed and how change makes me feel threatened or I could complain about the one thing that really, really grated on my nerves the  whole way through. Well, besides the doofy hats on the Hurlock Bolters.

Lothering.

A town that serves as something of a hub for the local farms. When I think farmland, I think green, grassy, generally pleasant surroundings. Something like it was in Origins but...more so. The protagonist and his family are fleeing for their lives, on foot, with the Darkspawn horde busy chewing up everything behind them.

As such, I  expected them to be passing through something like farmland. Maybe with the whole evil red sky the Darkspawn horde seems able to conjure up wherever it goes. Maybe with crops and houses blazing in the distance. Or some hint of the massive army you're escaping, perhaps stepping on some poor bastard's corn.

But no! It's Mars! It's slightly red. It's rocky. It's barren. It's the polar opposite of farmland, or anything near farmland. It's ugly, it's boring to look at. What it does look like is how the area would appear if you returned, after the Darkspawn had Blighted all over everything and ruined the land. In that regard it'd be perfect.

It makes me sad to look at. That and those ugly Hurlock hats. But you can kill the Hurlocks and then they go away. You can't escape Mars.

Not as bad as in Oblivion where the sky turns red near any gate, but I understand your point.

That's because it's burnt and tainted farmland.

Those are blightlands. That is why we couldn't go back to those areas after the blight was quelled... there was no artwork to account for how drastically the appearance of the land changes during a blight.

You mean the places that have been burnt and destroyed and tainted with Blight look desolate? Why I never!

A land tainted by Darkspawn literally called the "Blightlands" isn't supposed to look pretty with rainbows in the sky.

The blight eats the land. That's why it looks the way it does.

I would guess they are in the middle of it.

This is known in the LORE, but unfortunately Bioware has thus far done a crappy job of telling us little stuff like that.

So you have to read the DA:O Codex or the dragon age Wiki.

Blightlands, tainted lands, significance of the legion of blackened trees, etc. That said:

Your entire whiney post is justified by this. Hats off, sir.

You are not supposed to be encouraging developers with their love of brown!

I understand it, but sheesh, Pick black with grey speckles, anything but brown!

I apologies if this has been asked and answered but does anyone know if the pause and issue orders will be available for console or is that gonna be just PC only? Reason I ask is I found myself in the demo stunning an opponent with my warrior and fumbling around trying to get my Mage into position to lay waste to my stunned enemy. It would be a lot easier with the DA:O pause and order.

The land is already blighted. If you listened to the conversations, you learn that you are originally heading south towards the Kokiri Wilds, not north.

I think it's too early for me to be going out on a bender (sorry to the five geologists in the world who aren't alcoholics :P).

It doesn't eat it that fast.  If that were the case every battle with darkspawn would be in a barren waste. The Kocari Wilds looked fine to me.  The only blighted land I recall was in Awakening when going into the deep roads. Even Ostagar didn't look blighted upon returning and that was after a year of darkspawn control.

Could you imagine having to sheathe a greatsword?

I still want more trees. Or Blight meat. Some things on fire, perhaps.

Darkspawn ravaged, sinning-against-nature countryside not a Necron tombworld.

Plus I imagine they're out in what used to be the Korkari wilds... which were pretty bleak and barren already... add some Blight and you get Mars.
