Honestly I'm not all that skilled (mainly my aim is not that great with a controller). But I find that if you keep the layout of the map in mind and make sure not to run into a corner, you can handle husks by running and gunning.

I remember my first run through the Reaper IFF mission. I feared that one after reading the forums. But it was actually not that bad. In the final room, I somehow managed to get the husks stuck in a big group on the stairs. There were so many they couldn't move :)

There's a fairly good SMG upgrade later on. But otherwise, I feel your pain. I guess my most helpful hint is to abuse Incinerate like it is going out of style and to not get stuck in the mindset of using just one gun. As an infiltrator, they do get access to sniper rifles. Though, they all have limited supplies of ammo, it could be worse. The Carnifex is great when coming out of Stealth/while stealthed due to the damage boost though. Really lets you make the most of those few shots you get.

You don't need guns, check jwalker's video. He uses the Incinerate (Shep) - Cryo Blast (Mordin) tactic (classes that cannot use Incinerate can use Reave instead). Mordin's Cryo Blast has the fastest cooldown (4.5 s by default, 3.6 s with the Tech CD reduction upgrade). Pullbots like Jack, Samara and Morinth are great too (they can use Pull Field every 5 s (fully upgraded)).

With the right squad setup, Husks are no threat.

area reave + area reave + pull field = dead husks.

If you hit the husks with spray and pray SMG, you are too close. 2 Carnifex shots strip armor = 3 stripped husks per reload. Often, after you hit a trigger point, the husks will take a while to spawn - use that time to move back.

You have 24 shots for your carnifex. Using it to strip armour of husks via double shots just isn't efficient by any metric. In fact you're heading in the direction of overkill, there. As you say, 3 stripped husks per clip. Compare that to about the same number of husks per Locust clip with ~300 extra rounds.

As I say, while Heavy Pistols are designed for stopping power and armour penetration, that doesn't mean that they should be employed against any and all armour no matter the situation.

Sorry, why two areas reave ?
On Insanity, level 30, Samara's isn't good enough to completely strip husks's armor but Shepard's, with some bonus power from passive or gear, is.

Shepard's Area Reave + Squaddie's Pull Field / Mordin's Cryo Blast = Zombie killer

I used to get the Locust early in the game for most of my characters and then kept using it most of the time. But I never liked it that much for a few reasons: the firerate ist too slow for CQ fights and the sound is ridiculous. Recently I started a few new characters and took all of them to the Collector Ship quickly so that I can enjoy the Bonus Weapon for the rest of the game. That means after Horizon I only do 5 side missions.

Anyways... I skipped Kasumi and I really got used to the Shuriken. It's not as bad as I remembered it. The possibility to increase the firerate by pressing the firebutton quickly is really helpful. Currently I'm testing Tempest vs. Shuriken on a few characters and some go with the Tempest while I equip others with the Shuriken. None is wielding a Locust though although I consider using it on my Adept maybe some time soon.

As for my Infiltrator: I use the SMG primarily at close range. Cloaking, stoming, firing. Besides the Widow I go with the Phalanx which I really love now. Had some problems with it at first and never really used it but once you get used to it it's an amazing pistol. I call it my "pocket sniper" because that's what I use it for to conserve Widow ammo. The slower firerate is not really an issue because I almost never use it in CQ fights. That's when I pull out my Tempest with either Warp or Disruptor Ammo depending on the type of enemies. I really like this loadout combination (Phalanx, Tempest, Widow) for the Infiltrator. With the Locust on the other hand I found myself sitting behind cover way too much and not utilizing the Infiltrator's full potential (cloaking, flanking and/or getting close and putting a lot of SMG bullets into them at melee range).
