It helps to teach Bethany heal before going into the battle. (or learn heal yourself, if you're a mage) Image IPB

Aveline was able to hold off everyone while Wesley got pwned quickly. I killed off darkspawn one by one with a thread of health.

Once I was done, the ogre finally managed to pwn Aveline. All I had to do was outrun him and kick his ass.

Thank the the maker for Aveline.

Aveline has an ability that once activated, increases her defences. After you've activated it, notice that she also has a taunt. This taunt does not just taunt her current target, but all the targets near her. Enemies that are taunted will switch to attacking her if they are in the range of the taunt.

So, make sure that at the start of the fight you gather up all your characters near your tank so she can taunt all the enemies onto her. Then spread out your party a bit so that your ranged damage dealers do not recieve the area damage that the ogre does from time to time. Focus all your party members on attacking the ogre and soften the other enemies with aoe attacks, but keep focussing on the ogre.

If a new wave of enemies approach, group up all your party members and be ready to use taunt again. Don't spam taunt, keep it for when a new wave arrives or some enemies stop attacking your tanking warrior. If your tank is about half down on HP, use the heart icon in the lower right of the screen to use a potion. Don't use it before that point or you will waste a large part of the potion.

Lastly, sometimes you'll need to spam the potion button because your tank overrides it with a new attack. Just keep pressing the button until you see her HP rise.

No need to be so harsh guys <_<

When I played through it as a mage who pick the ice attack and Heal, instead of the AoE fire spell, the Ogre battle actually can be a pain. Seeing as no one then has an AoE attack. Aveline and Carver got taken out, but mage LadyHawke just ran around taking pot shots and healing for a couple of minutes :P

Then during my Archer Rogue and 2h Warrior demos, the Ogre fight was as easy as I expected it to be in the first place. I assume if you have the Fireball attack as Hawke, it'd also be easy enough for a Mage.

What you could do is have Aveline take on the Ogre by herself, while you keep the attention of the other darkspawn and just run around while they chase you. Aveline can probably win in a 1v1 fight with the Ogre without anyhelp. Then hopefully Hawke/sibling take out the darkspawn and help with the ogre after that. Hope that helps ^_^

That ogre had me quite angry as well. First, I forgot to level up my characters. Once I did, I had the mage heal, put the tank on the ogre while I rounded up all the darkspawn, made em chase me, I took them down, if my health got too low and the cooldown on the potion was in play, I ran around while they chased me. Once I took care of the darkspawn, I went and helped out the mage with the 1 or 2 on her, then the 3 of us took down the ogre.

I always take out the small fry first so they don't overwhelm my tank, who should be dealing with the Ogre. I also have my Mage set to Range, also made them learn Heal.

What Sirsmirkalot said is basically how it goes.

Then I suggest playing Origins first, it's pretty cheap now a days.

Dragon Age 2 is hella different from Dragon Age Origins, just saying.

See, that's the thing. I set Aveline as the tank, go into the tactics menu, and burn down the adds. But then more come back, I get her to tank 'em. And she just drops like a fly after a minute or two of combat.

What class are you? What abilities do you have? There is a bug with Shield Defense (or whatever the shield sustainable is called) which makes it turn off after every battle so make sure Aveline has it on. Use area abilities as much as possible while adds are up and burn down the ones called just "Hurlock". Once they're all down have your party focus fire on one "Hurlock Grunt" until all 3 are down. If you gave Aveline Stonewall then use that when needed.

Hope that helps.

It's really not, at least not on PC.

On my mage... a lot of running and potion use when it had cooled down - think I got through five potions on that fight between characters lol. Heal was useless as it's cooldown is just stupid now. Though my son said it was much much easier as a tank warrior.

I just noticed that too, waste of a point IMO and investing my other point in mind blast didn't turn out to be that smart either.

I found it's easier as an archer. Pro tip for Mage. I found spamming fire ball, and kitting when the darkspawn adds got too close was an easy victory. Struggled the first time when I speced healing. just awful.

* Reads some of the "help" being offered here * <_<

Depends on what character-type you're playing, but basically I send Aveline after the Ogre, have a mage (you or Bethany) concentrate on the mooks that come in, and the third character (either you or Carver) switch attacks between the Ogre and the mooks. When health starts to dip to about 1/3 or below, use a health potion. The first time I tried this I tried to just bring down the Ogre as quickly as possible, and that didn't work -- the mooks took us out.  Second and third time I followed the tactics above and haven't had to reload once.

Agreed 100%. Granted, health seems to disappear more slowly now, too, but not at the same rate. I'm thinking a 30s (or, at worst, 45s) cooldown.

Hi, I'm in a bit of a pickle. HOW DO YOU BEAT THAT SECOND OGRE?!

Have Aveline taunt the waves of Darkspawn to the Ogre position, AoE the Ogre, deal with both problems at the same time. Check that the AI doesn't do stupid things, play full party and pause as much as you see fit.

Have Aveline taunt and tank the ogre. Have your other melee character kill the various darkspawn mooks. Have you mage also target the mooks and occasionally heal Aveline.

Grab health potions in the chest right before the ogre.
