Why doesn't the ogre ever pick Aveline up and pound her to death?

Hate to say that but, yeah, I would rather take all Hawkes and leave Aveline to the Ogre. 3 Hawkes in a group is just awesome.

It is more likely that it would be the other way round, that is why.

Keep the female with shield on the Ogre, send your brother or you to kill adds, mage should help with add's, you win!

Heroic Aura seems to make a big difference, if Bethany has it.

Oh I didn't mean story-wise, I mean in Origins the Ogre would Grab (and Ram), but I don't see any Grabbing (or Ramming) this time though. (except when he kills your sibling)

Maybe they've gotten rid of the grabs completely?

It did ram me though.

How can you NOT beat that second ogre? :P Seriously. 'tis easy.

Well. The second time when I was on a Mage and didn't have a heal I did have two of them dying because apparently you can't use potions in succession or something. But still, manageable.

I've beaten the demo twice. Both times with a Sword and Shield Warrior.

First time I was getting beaten pretty bad, but then promptly wrecked the ogre and darkspawn hordes.

Second time, everyone died and I had to run around until my healing potion's cooldown ran down so I could use it again and take out the Ogre.

The darkspawn aren't so hard when there's no Ogre backing them up.

If all else fails make sure your mage is still standing and then start running around the enclosed area. Once you're far enough away from the Ogre spam a couple normal attacks and one spell, two if you're feeling risky. Once it gets too close to you, run to the other side and repeat once more. Getting close to the Ogre itself will cause it to stop moving and initiate a physical attack, which can work to your advantage. If there are still remaining darkspawn about, use the tactics above to kill them first and then move onto the Ogre. You might get hit once or twice if you wait too long in one spot, but in general you should stay relatively unscathed doing this.
Of course that's just a last resort if you find yourself unable to win no matter how many tactics you employ. Best advice is to make Aveline into a buffer, as others have suggested, and then wail away at them with your tactics.

I found it's easier as an archer. Pro tip for Mage. I found spamming fire ball, and kitting when the darkspawn adds got too close was an easy victory. Struggled the first time when I speced healing. just awful.

Um, can someone translate this into English for forum newbies (i.e. dummies) like me?
  • What does 'spamming fire ball' mean?  (Use it as often as possible?)
  • What does 'kitting' mean?
  • What are 'darkspawn adds'?  (I assume adds is short for something, but I can't figure out what)
With My female mage, I died 4 times before I beat the Ogre.  I swear my fireball did 0 damage, the mind blast was completely ineffective in that battle as well.  The darkspawn overwhelmed Carver and Aveline - and they had health at about 25% immediately.  So I had them use health potions and they were dead before the ^*&% cooldown period for the health potions wore off.  Once they died my female mage fell quickly.

Wierd thing, I could see the damage fireball and mind blast did in other fights - but in this one it was like they were innefective.

2nd play as an archer - the fight was a walk in the park.

Aveline - Keep Aveline Taunting

Bethany - Distance and Not surronded by enemies

Carver - Keep him hitting the ogre

Hawke - Attack the ogre

Honestly Normal is too easy. I hate this change of Firendly Fire.

Protip: Use Avelline as a tank to gain all aggro, then nuke the hell out of her, hitting all nearby enemies.

Everything dies.Theres no tactics to this and its ****** easy.

Anyone having issues with this clearly knows nothing about cRPGs.

This with Heal (Bethany) and you're good to go.

If you're a mage keep Avalene in taunt mode and just spam that area with attacks. with no more friendly fire it makes it much easier.

Ok since everyone else is gonna be an a**hole, I'll tell you how I beat it. I played as a mage that had mind blast, winters grasp, and heal. Obviously keep your mage at the edge of the battlefield so they take as little damage as possible and kill all of the little enemies first. Carver focused on the medium-level enemies.. Aveline focused on the ogre and also helped Carver if he got overwhelmed. Also use taunt if she has more health at the moment then carver. If either Carver or Aveline are about to die use stonewall, its an amazing ability. You can also let your mage rush in every so often and use mind-blast to help with crowd control. I had to only use one health potion during the fight because my mage had heal. Kinda long but I hope that helped.

Spamming means to use the spell as often as possible, yes.

Adds are additional creatures, besides the main one you are fighting.

Kiting means to run around staying out of arms reach of the ogre, with
the ogre chasing you. Like the ogre is a kite you are flying.

Kiting is a good strategy for the ogre if your tank dies. The ogre is slow and clearly telegraphs what he is going to do next, so you can stay out of the way of most of his damaging attacks.

All I needed to do was keep the adds from running around Aveline, then I burned them down. Thanks guys!
