Why doesn't the ogre ever pick Aveline up and pound her to death?

And why only Wesley got sick from 1!! wound when rest of my party is getting hit by darkspawn way more and is even more covered by their blood?

And I think his transition goes from "normal" to "corrupted" from one cutscene to the next.

Make sure you have "Heal" and "Fireball" or it's gonna be tough

Warrior and Rogue: Get Aveline to be you'r tank(get her to taunt everyone into attacking her) Have Hawke attack the ogre from behind while Bethany heals you and throws fireballs at the enemies.

Mage: Same strategy but with Carver filling Hawke's role and Hawke filling Bethany's role.

If you're REALLY having trouble, try getting Aveline 3 points in cunning on level up, maintain Heroic Aura(from either your own mage's level up or Bethany's) on and make sure she's always got everything on her through usage of taunt and keep her under Shield DEfense effects. SInce there's no friendly fire you can AoE to your heart's content with either Bethany or Carver. Make sure to stick to the hurlocks with whoever's not named Aveline, preferably making good use of the fact they're flocking around her to optimize AoEs. Otherwise, focus on keeping auto attacks centered on a single target. If things look sub-optimal, pause, take a deep breath and use a health potion on whoever is in need. Remember, if there's a single hurlock on anyone but Aveline, move such character closer to her and use her Taunt.

To anyone having trouble, this fight is a nice introduction to the concept of aggro management and boss/mobs aggro balancing. Feel free to experiment, you can have Carver or even yourself tank, if not a mage. What I listed is a pretty much sure fire way to pull through, but there's room for trials. Spamming pummel on the ogre is also a good idea, since they have surprisingly low resistances in Normal, apparently. And remember, Warriors are frontal AoE. If using CArver or being yourself a warrior, try and position yourself accordingly to make the most out of each slow swing. You can be missing out on tripling your DPS by going one-on-one.

Good luck mate ^^

cmon each easy, i soloed it as warrior after all other chars died cause i was afk xD.
I actually liked how ogre works, its really slow at attacking that allows you to just attack go back when u see animation return attack repeat... its not really difficult. You dont even need potions that way

This.

Bethany can solo that Ogre without taking any damage or casitng any spells.  Just stay away from him, auto-attack, and move aside whenever he charges or throws a rock at you.

set Aveline on the ogre, use health potions if necessary...it doesn't take her longer than five minutes to kill him on her own... sibling and you can take care of all the hurlocks.
Worked for me every time.

Yeah, you could definitely kite or step-back-step-forward. However, I highly doubt whoever's having trouble with it would find it productive, for they must lack knowledge in aggro basics. Besides, the game isn't balanced to be played like that, and basing your strategy on what should be a desperate last resort is a guaranteed formula to compromise tactical, wholesome approaches when it comes to party chemistry. Not to mention it makes everything take forever.

If you have trouble with the ogre on normal, perhaps you should read a book instead. No challenge in that.

Or play on easy? I thought that was the point of having that difficulty.

i would suggest utilising the awsomeness and epicness of Hawke's beard.
or failing that, unleash the chest hair of Varric. It won't stand a chance.

Don't be a game play snob/ass.

You have no clue what kind of player the player in question is.  Everyone has different levels of experience, physical abilites, age.  What ever happened to simply trying to help fellow game players instead of half the responses in a give thread being full of snark of discourtesy?

loot all the dudes so you have 5-6 potions, i felt that aveline was sort of fine on her own with maybe a pot or something she can easily solo the ogre with a pot or two even with the 3 adds i still had up my firs time. i always set bethany as cautious and kill the adds that go after her first, then the aveline adds. i didnt spec bethany into heal and i had no problems except for hawke dieing in my warrior playtrough, no one died in the mage, rogue and rogue archer though and the archer was fastest

Aveline can actually hold her own for a good while. Just make sure she's tanking the Ogre and just DPS all the Hurlocks down. Once they're dead, kill the Ogre.

It's quite easy...

I suppose that's what happens when BioWare wants to attract the shooter crowd. You reap what you sow.

(That's to the childish answers btw, not the original poster).

Dragon Age 2 is hella different from Dragon Age Origins, just saying.

It's really not, at least not on PC.

True. Combat is almost exactly the same. It's faster, but that's about the only real difference I noticed.

If I were to play on easy, I'm unsure of how boring that'd be since the demo was even easier than DA:O's normal.

Actually just kill like 3-5 of the hurlocks tops, they keep respawning otherwise and focus fire on the Ogre is what you should be doing.

And about being elitist, it's not. There are certain ways to play a game like this efficiently and it's not hard to figure out. Once you do, you'll see how easy it is.
