Fighter just press A repeatedly until ogre is dead, circle away from the ogre's special attacks when they occur.

Actually just kill like 3-5 of the hurlocks tops, they keep respawning otherwise and focus fire on the Ogre is what you should be doing.
Odd, I've never seen them respawn more than once or twice. They just stop after that.

Besides, If aveline has been specced into stonewall. She can tank the ogre and all the hurlocks indefineatly.
1. Spec into stonewall.
2. Gather hurlocks + ogre up.
3. Taunt
4. ???
5. Profit

Aveline can tank him no probs, just keep an eye on her health and you should be fine.

And for the OP's question: I used Aveline to tank the ogre. Hawke and Carver (in my case, I played a mage) took down the adds. once they were dead, I used all three characters to take down the ogre.

I did have to use potions on both Aveline and my mage a couple of times.

But I find those who say "I beat it without any tactics", "just use auto attack" or "Aveline can kill the ogre herself" hard to believe. Did you played in Immortal Aveline mode?

In normal mode, my Aveline died in 10 seconds without being able to kill anything. Each hit from a darkspawn takes away a good chunk of health, let alone the ogre. I won the battle at the first try though, using only Bethany. Run then throw a spell, rinse and repeat.

when I levelled Avaline up I put points in cunning and gave her stonewall. That helped a lot. She needed a potion as the darkspawn aren't always easy to keep off her, but she could tank them all pretty well and if it's just the ogre she can solo it no problem. I just let carver die to be honest he's a waste of resources in that fight and used my mage to take out the darkspawn.

That thing is really a pain especially when your tank can't hold aggro and its followers start beating on your Dps.Lets just say I'm glad I went with the healer specialization in my mage playthrough
Uhhhh what?
Just pump aveline full of constitution, press taunt in the middle of mobs every cooldown, sometimes heal aveline because she shoudl ideally be the only one taking damage. Use mage's mind blast thing to drop aggro off the mage or ignore that and spec heroic aura instead.
have your 2h guy use pommel strike to stun hte ogre, and mostly ignore the adds
That's it, you're done. Use a health and heal where applicable. ****ing easy.

Yes, the battle is easy, but most of us played a ton of DA1 and I can tell you from some experiments I did with distributing attribute points that you can make this fight pretty difficult by spending your attribute points poorly. That's not a mistake a veteran DA1 player is going to make, but the OP said he was new. Cut the guy some slack.
In addition to the (reasonable) advice already posted, I would suggest for anyone who is having trouble, pay attention to the attack & defense numbers when you level up. Not sure how it works on the console, but on the PC you can hover your mouse over the % numbers and it will show you what your rating is versus elite and boss mobs. The rating you see on the screen for against normal mobs. If you are taking too much damage and feel like you need to heal a lot, try putting more points in cunning. If you can't do any significant damage, put more points in the relavent attack skill (based on character type).

Also see here? See how everyone's positioned? This is what you do. If you're not doing this, stop doing whatever you're doing and do this.

See how shield defense is up? See how taunt is on cooldown? See how all the mobs are attacking avaline, see how the squishy mage is away from all the damage? see how I haven't even used a potion (i used exactly 1, after the ogre died I got swarmed by mobs and Heal was on CD. I almost didn't have to.)?
This is all you have to do. Hope This Helps.

Give your Mage heal, only use it to keep Aveline up
Take out trash mobs as they come in, try to herd them using Avelines taunt then flask and aoe them.
Once all trash mobs are dead, surround the ogre and burn them down.

Not being a stat nerd but having spent a lot of time with DA:O, I automatically dumped points disproportionally into cunning for my tank once I realized I wasn't going to get any armor upgrades, and chose skills like stonewall and taunt. Don't think I lost Aveline on any playthroughs other than the one where I thought I had paused when the phone rang...
Other than that, I recommend you practice moving between your party members in pause mode to see where they are, what they are doing, and what their status is, and adjust their intent accordingly.
Oddly, this also was one fight where intuitively it felt like the smart thing to do was to clear out the riff-raff while avoiding the "boss" (ogre), unlike most battles where you want to take out the Big Cheese early. Maybe because it was an early fight, and I lacked nukes like mana clash or arrow of slaying? When one or two smartly-placed fireballs would take out most of said raff, this works well. Again, use your radial menu to your advantage, and apply the Wisdom of the Round Table: Run Away!
Stick with it! Ignore the trolls! Well, or kill them with good use of the radial menu...
