So I get to the point where I hit the PLAY button and it does the whole initial "Collecting System Information" bit ... but after it gets about 1/8th or less of the way through, it just stops.  I waited about two hours and it hasn't progressed beyond that point ... what do I do? (I tried restarting the computer and doing it again ... same thing, just stops at the same point)

There may be any number of possiilities affecting your Demo, but among the most common for the DAO game was created by having some unusual setup of some sort, such as a production type graphics system instead of a retail gaming video device.  You might try giving us your system Specification rundown now, and if the thread doesn't get buried too soon, maybe someone might recognize what you have that gives the configuration utility a bellyache:

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon X2 / Pentium D / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed:  ?.? Ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Win7, Vista ?
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024 ? )
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD, so please answer which of them you have)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 5670 / Geforce GT 240
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.??
. . (please use the numbers, and dates, *not* the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

(And this is only for the raw hardware & driver variations.  Potential software conflicts are far more likely to be game play problems, and developers cannot test for all possible program loads.)

P. S.  Please use every day business style paragraph breaks, punctuation, and spelling.

Thank you very much for responding. But you know what, after reading about all the problems people are having with the demo, the UI, the system, the FPS, etc, etc. I don't think I want to play the demo any more. But, again, thank you very much for responding.

So, just for the hell of it I left it going while I went and did other stuff and after about 5 hours of doing its thing, it actually finished. No idea why it took so long, but once I got into the game (had to run it on medium graphics, as it kept crashing right at load on high) I had no other bug problems. I didn't bother with the tactics screen, because I heard it was broken, but everything else seemed to work as expected and the game ran really smooth. (no lag in combat, UI worked fine, etc.)

So .... one hell of an effort to get it installed, but a good run once it was.
