For those who get the "d3dx9_43.dll is missing" error message on starting the demo:

Go to the folder you installed the Demo to, go to "redist", then "DirectX" and start DXSetup.exe. The files are all there, there just seems to be a problem with the installation.

I opened this thread because the other one is locked and it is not in fact necessary to redownload anything.

Ah, good to know it's there even in the demo. Haha.  What you found is in fact thesame  DirectX 9 installation file as the download.  Most games nowadays include it on their disc, they just don't by default install it because you SHOULD already have it installed, but sometimes fresh Vista and 7 installations don't.

For some reason It keeps randomly crashing, I just bought a GTX580 OC version and I have a nice system So I don't know whats up, it has crashed 5/5 times now, haven't gotten passed the first area. I am trying to use the DX installer now, hopefully it works. Any other tips I can get? I tried using max settings DX11 first time of course, and the game looks so choppy and odd looking and runs horrible.

Also why can I not SAVE the game? Thats really annoying to get 10 minutes in, crash and have to restart.

Yeah, no save is annoying, but alas few demos have a save function.

The demo is installed to your hard drive, which you can access by going to your Start menu and then choosing "computer" to bring up the file window. For simplicity's sake, I'll just assume your hard drive is the c: drive. From there, the demo is likely under a folder called "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)." Then you will likely see a folder called "Dragon Age 2 Demo." In that folder is another folder called "redist." In that folder is another folder called "DirectX." In that folder is a program called "DXSETUP." Double click it.

@Cammander Jazzy Shepard: In your Dragon Age 2 Demo folder, there is a folder called "redist". Inside that folder is a folder called "DirectX". And inside that folder is a file called "DXSetup.exe"

I simply went to Microsoft's site and updated my DX9.0c (Re-distributable) version, that fixed it for me.

I got it installing. How long should it take though? The install was going pretty fast until this one part and it has been stuck there for 5 minutes.

This is actually an exceedingly common issue with DirectX 9 games on Vista or Windows 7. The game will complain of a missing DirectX 9 file. You usually have to install/update DirectX 9 on Vista and Windows 7 to play most games.

I can't get DirectX9 to install. I keep getting an error message and unable to install, please check the error log. The error log lists a bunch of missing files. Now what can I do. I am at a loss. If anyone has a solution, please make it the troubleshooting for dummies version.

Following BWBamboo's instructions worked for me. Windows XP SP3. On an XP box, the game uses DX9, not DX10, but the DX10 components need to be installed anyway, it seems.

You are right.

I support Windows, Games, and such here at Microsoft and it seems to be something that happens from time to time. I spoke with my old boss this morning and he mentioned seeing this with a few games. The installer would not see DirectX 9 on later systems and complain. It would then look like its install the missing components, but really its just waving its hands and doing nothing.

You can always run the full package installer from the website if running the DirectX installer in the game directory doesn't work. This should install anything that is "missing".

So I guess backwards compatable is backwards compatible, except when it isn't. Posted Image

For the record: I had this problem on my i7 system running Windows 7 64-bit (so it natively supports Direct X 11). I built this new system specifically to play Dragon Age II. The irony has not escaped me. Posted Image

When it asks where to unzip the files, any suggestions where I should put them. At this point, in my frustration, all my ideas are rather graphic and not related to the actual files involved.

edit: I've now tried two versions of the x9, Aug 2009 and June 2010. I get the same errors. I really don't know what else to do and not being a computer guru, I'm at a loss. All I can hope is that I don't have the same problem with the full game.:(

edit x2: thanks everyone for trying to help. I appreciate it. I'll just wallow in some self pity for a bit, then gush over everyone's screenshots.
