I find that the system is designed poorly. At level 30, you have exactly enough points for 3 maxed skills, and one extra point for Miranda and Jacob. Some skills are greyed out, and require level 2 in another skill to unlock. If you get the appropriate level 2 skill to unlock the skill you want, TWO skills cannot be level 4 instead of the regular one skill, and only two can. I think that it is irritating and a bad design, since to unlock them two level 4 skills must be ignored.

For example, Tali's  primary skill storywise (AI Hacking) requires level 2 Combat Drone. Ordinarily, I would get 4/4 Quarian Engineer, 4/4 Energy Drain, and 4/4 AI Hacking (If it was not locked). Now if I were to get AI Hacking, I have to spend 3 points in Combat Drone, 10 points in Quarian Engineer, and 10 points in AI Hacking. This leaves me with me with 7 points to spend, 6 of which I put into 3/4 Energy Drain.

I only have 2 skills maxed now, and 1 point just sitting there wasted. I dont know if the design was to make the locked skill require a "sacrifice" of a 4/4 skill because it is so good, but it just feels annoying and overly obstructive.

Edit: Fixed ugly paragraph formatting.

The same problem exists for Shepard. You can only have 5 talents maxed out (plus 1 point for one other talent if you are playing for the second time), and doing otherwise creates wasted points. It is just more obvious in squad members since they get fewer skills to play with.

Not really the forum section to post this in, as I dont see any real question/discussion about strategy or builds, but more so criticism (albeit justified).

Trust me though, you're only making a point that MANY have already made.

Very few people like the "unlock" aspect, especially since for a few characters the prerequisite skill to unlock is sometimes worthless.

I dont think you'll find anyone disagreeing too much with your point that its kinda stupid... I guess most that have been playing for awhile have already learned to suffer with it.

I thought this was the most appropriate forum since it involved criticizing pretty much all builds. I just wish they dont have this kind of BS in ME3.

Have you taken into account the possibility of ME3 keeping your current power setup, and then allowing you to advance further up the level tree, letting you to max out current skills, as well as adding new ones to do into the blank spots shown when you bring up the power wheel?

I think this will be the case given that the PS3 version allegedly runs on the ME3 engine. I doubt Bioware will force us to respec our characters again with all new skills and setups. If anything, a respec may occur because they remove the unlock section of powers, or at the very least, drop it to a 1 point unlock instead of 2 points.

Maybe, it would actually be pretty fun if it was that way. The system in DOW2 did that with the Chaos Rising expansion, where the previous character got to level 30 from 20 and got new skills/gear. I would really like for BW not to make a completely new system like they did for ME2.

Don't max Tali's passive; it doesn't do all that much without any cooldown bonus associated with it.  My personal favorite Tali build I've used over and over is 4 Explosive Drone / 4 Improved AI Hacking / 0 Passive / 4 Area Drain.

Back on topic though, I see what you're saying but I don't mind the skill requirements nearly as much as I use to before LotSB and it's squadmate respeccing.  I can still be annoying at times, but perhaps Bioware feels it provides some kind of balance to some of them?  I don't know.  I do feel like people get too worked up having a point or two "wasted" at lvl 30 with some builds.

It's just a disadvantage of that particular skill which you have to account for like any other weakness or disadvantage of a particular ability, such as Tempest being inaccurate at long range, Cryo Ammo doing nothing on armor, etc. I can see why it's annoying, but I wouldn't say it's poor design.

The only thing I'd like to add to the entire Squad, is to give them the same standing as Jacob and Miranda with how their power selection functions.

So, 31 points total and only 1 point needed to unlock the second power.
