There is a good mod that does this, Sophie's choice if I remember correctly.

It makes the game assume you are what you are not as long as its toggled, so you can be a mage, but it will treat you like a rogue/warrior, thus you can have Bethany with you even if you are a Mage, it will just ignore that you are for conversations.

Since you can toggle it, you can turn it off once Bethany/Carver isn't with you, making the game work as intended again, but it will cause glitches if they talk about your siblings when off.

=( oh well, guess I can't have my cake and eat it as well.

If they were going to force so much narrative on me I'd have hoped the spirit of the first game would have made it in the form of more options on a second play through, then that would have been... epic.

Each player I think has their own real ending, it's not any other persons business what another players favorite course of action is or the desire thereof... the developers must not see it that way though. If anything though this direction is a bitter dose still a good game regardless of the rail road design.

There is a mod that allows you to chose which dies, but, using it to keep Bethany, while it does not break the game, does not fit well with a mage Hawke. Besides constantly being mean to Carver does make a nice sibling rivalry. I tried keeping Bethany, but ended up hating the resulting game so, removed that mod and started over, the right way, with Bethany dead and Carver alive.

I also modded the mod to keep both, now that was a game breaker. Fine through act 1 but, after deep roads ( I took Carver and Anders to let him be a grey warden and left Bethany home) Came home to a Bethany that moved and acted as a NPC but was not in the circle nor a warden and was not selectable either, but was stuck as a non fighting party member, meaning she took a slot but just followed and did nothing.

No it's not. Warrior or rogue and Carver dies, Mage and Bethany dies. Well technically if you play on pc I think you could probably mod it but it kinda messes things up, wouldn't recommend doing that.

There is an easy way to be a mage and keep Bethany. Just play through the beginning (up to the point when you arrive in Kirkwall) as a warrior/rogue. After you arrive in the city, with that bastard Carver dead, you can use the console command runscript chargen mage XX, where XX is the level you want to get.
Warning: it does cause some glitches in the game dialogues (for instance, Carver sometimes talks instead of Bethany), but as far a I got, they are rather minor.

And I wish we didn't have to lose any of them. :(

Both characters are good, If hawke must lose one, should has been the one that was left behind, carver go to the templar or beth is taken to the circle. If you take both.. well thats good too!.. lol!

Why didn't they let us save both of them on a harder difficulty, ala Alpha Protocol's Veteran(not suuure) difficulty Brayko mission? WHY?! I know... *deep* storytelling!

Well that's dissapointing, guess I'll just have to mod it in myself. I personally think it would be better if everyone got Bethany no exceptions and Carver was just the designated "hero" for the prologue.

Developers have strongly implied that any mods that alter this will break things.

Obviously anyone who mods this will do so by replacing every flag in the game to Bethany if you choose Carver so while you'll have the Carver boy, the game will treat him like he's Bethany. It'll make absolutely no sense, but I'm sure there are people who like/hate one of the siblings enough to go with it anyways.

I am not a pro modder, but can't it be made by swapping the asigned flag? Just asign the same flag to mage class as is asigned to worrior and rouge class. It would get us Bethany. The only downside would be the dialogues, which would load for a non-mage Hawke.

Instead of modding... would using the console work? ie, make a rogue/warrior (doesn't matter) and wait until carver dies, then do "runscript chargen mage X" where x=your current level. I would suggest taking everything off before doing that though.

Carver's better than Bethany, only because Bethany agrees with every single thing you do. It's like, "get a personality, girl!"
Carver is infinitely better than Bethany, although it would be nice if the default answers for Carver were not so rude.

On a belated note: Why was everyone about whether Bethany or Carver was more likeable? For me the most interesting difference is Bethany's fate of

Spoiler
It was enough to tip me over to switch to Warrior halfway through Act2 as a mage, even though I found mage-gameplay somewhat more interesting.
