when I play the game on the lowest resolution (800 by 600) the screen is stretched, instead of the black margins on the side. This had not been a problem until yesterday, so I don't understand what's going on.
my laptop is hp, paviilion dv5.

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;

2) Please post your specs as per this thread: http://social.biowar...6/index/4795299

Check your graphic card control panel for fullscreen controls, and make sure it's set to keep aspect ratio when resizing.

I have registered the game.
my system meets all of the necessary specs.
my processor is an AMD Turion II P540 Dual-Core Processor
clock speed - 2384 MHz
physical memory - 3.74 GB
display adapter - AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
driver version - atiu9p64.dll,atiuxp64.dll,atiu9pag,atiuxpag,atiumdva,atiumd6a.cap,atitmm64.dll [8.14.1.6143]
VRAM - 320 MB
I have windows 7 home premium
I have directx 10.0 (March 2009) or later
sound adapter - Speakers and Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC)
driver version - 6.10.6289.0
I am using a physical disc from Target
version information - MassEffect2.EXE v1.02
My problem is that a couple of days ago, I went to play Mass Effect 2, and normally, I set the graphics to the lowest resolution (800 by 600). At this level, the computer runs the game very smoothly. When I put the display to the lowest resolution, black margins appear on the sides of the screen, keeping the game in a standard size shape (no widescreen). However, when I went to play the game a couple of days ago, the display was stretched, reaching the sides of the screen. This has never happened, and for the past few months, the game has been working fine. The problem is not the gameplay, but the display. However, when I set the game to the highest resolution (just to see what would happen), the game looks like it should at that resolution. Can someone please help me?

Dorryn is correct, you need to find the settings for how your graphics card handles aspect ratios other than those of your screen.
For me, I would change this in the AMD Catalyst Control Center. But when you buy a computer from a manufacturer, especially a laptop, they often have their own custom GPU controls.
Can't tell you why it changed on its own, but that is presumably how you will change it back.

You can also try setting it for windowed mode, either with or without border.
