Pretty much all the tie-in books I've read have been crap, with the exception of a few Star Wars extended universe books (and even some of those are crap).

So are the Mass Effect tie-in books any good?

Unless you're truly fascinated by the Mass Effect universe, don't bother. There are also minor references to the books in the games. But that's pretty much it.

In my opinion, the Mass Effect tie-in novels have the same level of quality as what you see in your average Star Wars EU book. Perhaps leaning more toward the Kevin J. Anderson side versus the Michael A. Stackpole side of average. You get some additional insight into the ME universe. Whether you feel that's worth it is up to you.

Meh, if you want some extra background info on Mass Effect go ahead and buy them.

But I really didn't enjoy them myself. Found them really boring actually.

They're ok, I had fun with them.

Found the DA books better written though.

I hate to say it, but the novels were outright borefests and on the same level as the Star Wars EU material.

I've learned my lesson with tie-in novels. I avoid them like the plague, unless a friend strongly recommends them. So far, I've gotten no such recommendations.

Didnt the guy who made the story for ME1/2 make the books? Or was that the comics?

Drew (ME1 guy) wrote the books.  Mac (ME2 guy) wrote the comics.  Both are pretty bad, IMO, the comics moreso since they have the misfortune of some pretty horrific illustrations.

Huh. I thought they were bad because they contradicted the story. The guys who WROTE the ME story contradicted themselves?

Lol weird. Why would they do that if it only degrades Mass Effect?

General sloppiness, plus they don't have the Bioware think tank behind them to fact check. Or something like that.

Really? I found them addictive, although it may be because I'm a freak about Mass Effect.

Despite being mostly god-awful, the Star Wars tie-ins don't really hurt Star Wars because hardly anyone even knows they exist.

Maybe Karpyshyn and Walters thought the same would be true of Mass Effect.

Same here! Loved all three, soaked up every little bit of info about the races that is mentioned. Loved the Council sessions, loved Saren in the first one, the mention of an all turian mercenary group, the fact that Ambassador Orinia feels awkward when trying to master the human act of handshaking. Stuff like that! Enjoyed them to the fullest! And they're such an easy read as well. ^_^

dragon age is my favorite of the two universes and i have been reading the 1st DA book for too long. i do love it but i guess its harder to read about the world when you can play it, but i do love anything DA.

as far as the ME books go, i couldnt put them down after a certain point. in fact one night i enjoyed reading the book so much i finished the last third in one fell swoop. it actually happened during both books...

theres just something about the science fiction aspects of the ME books that keep me going. i loved learning about how the guns are designed in the ME universe, how a tiny bit of metal is shaved off from a chamber in the gun etc... stuff like that in between learning about characters that i have met in the games...

i still remember the 1st time i met Loghaine in DAO after reading much of the stolen throne and how the experience was so much cooler than if i had not read it...

sorry, im watching blue harvest right now, so my writing is scattered and poor, i hope you can glean what you need from this... lol

I've only read Revelation and I'm in the middle of Ascension right now.I found both books very good, and I don't even like books.I really don't know why I started in the first place, but I'm glad I did.

Dialogs are great,Saren in Revelation is just awesome and there are some really cool new characters (Skarr). I recommend.

They aren't going to become classics anytime soon, but they aren't bad either

They're better than the comics. I read all three of them while I was on vacation. The first one is much better than the other two.

I liked Drew's Darth Bane books. I expected that the ME books to be atleast readable, but i'm disappointed.

The Mass Effect novels are pretty bad aside from Revelation because a certain side character from Revelation becomes a main character in the next two books and learns nothing from her experiences in Revelation. The third novel also kinda sucks because it established the precedent of Bioware retconning player decisions in the game, which leaked into the comics and doesn't bode well for ME3.

I found them decent, but only if you are really into mass effect. I would not recommend them to someone outside the fandom. I found the 'central' character of all three books to be very painful, but some of the minor bits are actually interesting. I'll say I never regretted buying them, but I won't be using them to try and lure people to ME.

Huh? What did the third book retcon? I thought it did a good job of hinting at what happened in ME2 without actually saying anything directly. Even with Admiral Anderson, it never is perfectly clear if hes the ambassador or just an admiral assisting the other guy.

If you're really into the ME universe, the books might be worth borrowing, but not buying. I read the first one on Kindle and could not believe the last page was actually the last page. The story felt like it was setting up for character development or a bigger conflict...and then stopped.
