My simple requirement is that a tie-in is any good is whether or not it could stand on its own. Would I be reading this book or comic if NOT for Mass Effect? Star Wars comics were sometimes horrid, but there were occasional writers and artists who I was a fan of and didn't disappoint. I'm afraid Mass Effect tie-ins (first novel and the comics) have failed for me. But I agree it's subjective. If you dig them, that's cool, just don't berate me for not being a TRUE FAN.
Are the Mass Effect tie-in books any good?

The first one is good.
The other two are not so great.

Got the first one on wednesday, and thus far I am enjoying it, so much so it should be finished by the time I get home today (stupid long bus rides...).
OP do what I always do, buy the first and ONLY first book a series you want to try, like the first one then get next one. Nothing worse than getting a series of book to find you can't stand them.

In my opinion, these authors are just cashing in on a popular franchise, which is why you'll find the same authors doing Star Wars and Star Trek type books as well. The stories could easily be from any sci-fi, the authors just draw on familiar races and locations.
There are some great books out there, some classics might be worth a read if you don't mind diverting from Mass Effect lore.
For any future visitors to this discussion, itunes offer about 70 pages of each book as a taster. I've read part of Mass Effect: Ascension and couldn't relate to the characters. I've yet to read the comics, I've heard they are a bit graphic (pardon the pun!) which makes me think these are more people cashing in. Let's hope the movie producers take at Mass Effect is from the spirit of the game's storyline.

I agree with others, first book is good but the second and third lack something. If u have an iPad and Kindle app u can read the comics FOC. And the books also if u read fast.
