Killing off a character you just meet is not good writing.

I don't think I am alone in saying that I felt no emotional impact whatsoever when Bethany/Carver died.  None.  I felt the same when Wesley died.  It's a rookie mistake that a lot of writers make, but I didn't expect Gaider and his lackeys to fall victim to it.  Don't do anything major to characters you just meet, and don't go into their backstories either- it's not interesting unless we've had event-based experiences with these characters.

Interestingly enough, a new trailer was released which shows Hawke falling to the ground, overcome with grief at the sight of his sibling's death.

So either the demo is misleading, or this new trailer is.

I would agree, if you didn't have Aveline and your family being shaped by these events. While I may not care for Wesley or dead sibling, I may care about the characters that care about them.

I agree with you on the sibling. But not much could have been done with Wesley. Sometimes in a warzone you might meet someone who dies shortly afterwards. It's not necessarily bad writing, sometimes it just happens. I suspect Aveline will be well written and that her arc will gather much of its poignancy from her bereavement.

they killed off one of the siblings for a reason, not for the lulz

It's only a rookie mistake if they hadn't planned for it. It's part of the reason why they made your class a factor in which sibling died. They knew there wasn't an emotional attachment yet. It does helps with the development of the remaining characters.

the deaths need not impact your character directly to have meaning. Id imagine your sibling will take the other's death hard and develop form it. Same goes for Aveline.

Why is it a mistake? Must every single character you first meet play a major role in the story? They did it on purpose. Just like with Jenkins or Wilson in ME....

I think the emotional impact was meant for Hawke and his/her family (and Aveline for Wesley). Mainly for story reasons. I don't think Aveline would have been the same if Wesley had survived and they live together in Kirkwall.

I actually laughed because he looked like a total pansy too.

Reminds me of that Dalish Elf Tamlen.

A death scene is almost unintentional humor with these kind of characters.

One thing we agree on is a demo, maybe ( I hope) in the game we can, might be able to save them both? And Wesley was dead because he got darkspawn blood in his system, how? I do not know, things happens..

yeah, Tamlen's made no sense. We had no regular interactions with the people who would be most impacted by his death. I dont classify Carver/Beth and Wesley as pointless though.

Perhaps the point is not to bring you to wailing tears over the deaths of those characters, but to set up certain things for later, hmm?

If we'd run around here saying "YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO WET YOURSELVES OVER THIS THING WE DO IN THE BEGINNING!" you could happily hoist us on our petard, but we didn't. So our petard remains unhoisted.

Completely agree. And, Mhairi did not die right at the beginning. Her character was developed at least a little, so we did marginally give a ****. Bethany/Carver and Wesley die after less than 10 lines of dialogue. And where the hell did the mother go anyway?

@Vahe Apart from the fact that wow, who made you boss of writing technique, WTF? You don't know WHY they did it yet, you've played twenty minutes of story, and you're dismissing it straight off? I don't know, some people just wake up in the morning and decide they have to complain, don't they?

I have no idea how Wesley got darkspawn blood in him from a shoulder wound. Would have been nice if they had shown some darkspawn bleeding on him or something

Wins the thread.

Still, going to be ignored by whiners who will buy the game anyway and then figure out what you're talking about, and once that happens, go back to complaining about Isabela's rack.

Mama hawke is one of those tropes where she just magically appears when something happens but is no where to be found when the protaganist is just doing normal stuff.

I doubt we'll be able to save them in the actual game.

It's not like it's the first time. Trask, Jenkins (wow, like that one wasn't obvious), probably others I don't care to recall at the moment.

However, it would have been nice if they lived a little longer to get to know, like in Jade Empire before your school gets destroyed.

It's a common narrative trope that's generally done to display how dire of a situation the main character is in. It's not necessarily supposed to invoke any sort of sympathy like you assume. It's a tone setter.  If it didn't work, it wouldn't be a trope.  Whether or not Bioware is able to pull off the completion of the trope later in the game remains to be seen, and at this point, you can't consider it good or bad writing.
