Killing off a character you just meet is not good writing.

Wesley was an ignorant ******, he got what he deserved.

I felt the same way until I actually played the Demo.

Wesley marched THROUGH Lothering, Into Ostagar, right in the middle of a freaking Darkspawn party where no one would survive just to save Aveline and make sure she'd get back home alright.

He maybe somewhat silly for starting an argument in the middle of a seige, but I respect a man with that much courage.

I think the cut-scene is to blame , not the writing , i dont know , that CS just lacks emotional impact... Lacks petard hoist ...

Perhaps the point is not to bring you to wailing tears over the deaths of those characters, but to set up certain things for later, hmm?

If we'd run around here saying "YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO WET YOURSELVES OVER THIS THING WE DO IN THE BEGINNING!" you could happily hoist us on our petard, but we didn't. So our petard remains unhoisted.

They are totally gonna be darkspawn, aren't they? its okay. You can tell us here.

That's why Hepler's writing Bethany, huh? Cuz she's so totally gonna be a brood mother, huh?

I don't think he's an ignorant ****** so much as just an idiot. Kind of like Alistair, but not as cute.

I was more bothered by the "Mother's" reaction... "I will never forget you..." WTF, she's your daughter/son, of course you won't unless you contract Alzheimer's!

That is what I am so looking forward to with the story (or individual stories) of Dragon Age II (to really provide us

with an emotianal bash, to connect us with each character who is an essential part of the story [to some extent

minor characters, but it is up to how the writer(s) plan out the story] as to experience the emotional highs and lows

of his or her life as the game progresses, at its climax, and its denouement), for I am in love with the combat

already and the tactical ways and approaches of playing this game.  It will be truly challenging and gratifying to

play on Nightmare.

Edit:  (added words within parentheses and bracket for better clarity)

Mike, is Hawke going to come to terms with Bethany/Carver's death during a fade sequence maybe?

The biggest point of these deaths is to, as MrStorm said, shape the characters' actions over the next ten years. It is less about you feeling sorry and more about their next move.

Wesley had to die. One of the siblings had to die. Could we have had a prologue where the Hawke family bonded for a week in Lothering, farming, cooking, and generally gossiping about a possible Blight and what the deal is with the soldiers gathering at Ostagar - all for the purpose of making you fall in love with a character? Sure. Would it have made fun gameplay? I would say no.

I write stories all the time so normally I would agree with you. But the fact that this is not a novel or a movie but instead an interactive media changes the playing field. Kirkwall was just more important to the gameplay and to the meat of the story than Lothering.

On a personal standpoint, I did feel a great deal of sadness at the death of Wesley. I felt that way because I cared about Aveline at that point. I liked her a lot and I felt the whole scene was well written. I was also sad when Beth died in my play through because I have siblings and can relate, and was empathetic towards a mother reeling at the loss of her child. Different reactions for different people, I guess.

Their deaths might serve a purpose for a later but, meh. Personally I thought the writing around that scene was pretty bad. The mother's voice acting dragged it down too.

Yes. She recognized Carver and Hawke who were also at Ostagar, fighting for the king. She got trapped. Wesley ran in to save her.

And I disagree with the O.P--I felt bad when Aveline mercy-killed Wesley. T'was very good, I thought. The silence, camera placement, etc.

I have no idea how Wesley got darkspawn blood in him from a shoulder wound. Would have been nice if they had shown some darkspawn bleeding on him or something

Isn't exactly how the taint works but that aside he had already had contact with darkspawn before we saw him. My guess is he had been tainted for a while, hence the drawn face and all. :)

Hmm, was this in one of the investigate options? I didn't choose all of them, and don't remember Aveline recognizing Hawke.

Actually, with all the gooey red Darkspawn fireworks going on during the demo, I'm surprised that not every character was contaminated. But I can handle that.

I can also handle the death of the brother.

What confuses me is how people on this forum can come to the conclusion that he was a stupid character from his five minutes of fighting for his life against a horde of Darkspawn? What the hell? In what way could he have fought for his and his family's lives against a horde of Darkspawn that would've convinced you that he was a man worthy of his family's love and respect?

Sheesh.

Yep. She talks about how she was in the 7th fleet or something. I think it is the question when Hawke asks "Wait, how did you get here?" and Wesley explains that he was on his way to Denereim on an errand, and he heard how Ostagar fell. So he ran to rescue Aveline for fear he'd be too late.

Then I think another option opens.

Maybe we're supposed to care on the second playthrough, where we'll presumably pick a class that allows us to experience the other siblings.

I know she recognized carver, but I would think if she saw hawke would depend on what you play him as. I don't think an apostate mage would be at Ostagar, but a rogue or warrior might :) Okay gonna play again. LOL

It adds to the OTHER characters. Its done in several good books, it establishes reasons for a characters actions and provides insight into their character.

Good question. How did the rest of them avoid the taint?
