Killing off a character you just meet is not good writing.

You forgot poor Khalid from BG2 -
But if you played BG1, you at least knew him. In the end I agree with what other said about this. It can't have a deep impact on the player, because you don't have a emotional connection with the character. But that was probably not the goal of the writers.
It will may by the way change a bit, if you played it through with a rogue and than start a playthrough with a mage and see Beth, who you know from your first playthrough, die.

No they are in context since he is proving BioWares trademark, which is their love of killing a starting teammate. Ashley/Kaiden is out of context since they don't die at the start instead they gave you a hard choice for them (Which wasn't hard for me since I didn't like both of them) which is another trademark of theirs which is the "Choose choice"Vahe wrote...

Are you kidding? It's practically a Bioware staple by now.

-Trask

And probably others since I excluded NWN, Jade Empire, MDK2 and Shattered Steel. If you're in a Bioware game, someone you meet early on is going to die. Sometimes they will do so in a flashy way like Gorion, and sometimes they'll go out whimpering like Wilson, but no matter what, they're doomed from the start. I can't wait to see who dies in ME3.
I have little problem with Wesley's death. That's not being put into question here.
You bring up a lot of games and characters, but they're out of context. A more appropriate comparison would be if Kaiden or Ashley from Mass Effect died at the beginning of the game.
My point is, which was more emotional? Jenkins death or Ashley/Kaiden's?
I would actually say Nihlus' death best fits this description. Nihlus was a much more significant character than Jenkins. I think the Jenkins thing was a joke/eastegg, but Nihlus was supposed to be the character that made you feel a certain way that "someone significant just died, **** just got real"
And I think it was successful. Nihlus' death felt more signifcant than Hawke's siblings death. :\\

But for one of Hawke's siblings to die in the same manner and for him to elicit no emotional response calls into question the writers' aptitude. If Hawke doesn't care, why should we? Especially if something comes of it later on in the story.

oh yes lol
but I loved Khalid, but didn't care so much about Dynaheir. Used to let her die in BG1 so I could keep Xan lol

As far as writing goes, there are a lot of reasons to kill off a character early. Shock value, clear out the cast down the core characters, set up a plot point down the line, or just let the audience know this scene is deadly. Dragon Age tends to kill off a lot of characters early on, it might not be bad writing but it could become a crutch the writers have to include for their own reasons.

I don't think I am alone in saying that I felt no emotional impact whatsoever when Bethany/Carver died. None. I felt the same when Wesley died.
Perhaps the point is not to bring you to wailing tears over the deaths of those characters, but to set up certain things for later, hmm?
If we'd run around here saying "YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO WET YOURSELVES OVER THIS THING WE DO IN THE BEGINNING!" you could happily hoist us on our petard, but we didn't. So our petard remains unhoisted.
Valid for a random NPC, but it's your sibling dying there...Hawke should be a serious character, you should be able to emotionally contact with him. And if he just...stands there just after a sibling died, it just doesn't feel credible at all.
Even if the sibling returns later on after he got infected with the taint and became a darkspawn. Careful, spoilers. Oops.

I have not played the full game, so there might be a 10-30 min, where you pack up your stuff and talk with family members then you flee and we see the scene of the demo. If this is not the case, then either a flashback scene or a good reason why the sibling got killed off, i feel no remorse nor sad when the brother/sister died and this is wrong in my opinion.

I have faith that Bioware will suprise us, but if this is not the case then killing off the sibling in the begining without any backstory makes it feel dull.

In DAO you leave before Lothering is overrun. All you see is the map turn dark and eventually you see the icon change after the town is lost. In addition to quality time with the fam, it could have been to finally show how harrowing an event the overruning of the south actually was (was worst part of the first games story imho) and could tie in quick lines/scenes to tie it in for us that played the first game.
Such as people getting maimed while fleeing because crazy trap lady set them all over the place. Or someone could make reference to the Qunari missing from the cage, or the jerk merchant getting his stall looted in the hysteria, or the fellow looking for the urn in the chantry, or the chanter that only tries to converse quoting the word of Andraste, etc.
So much potential on top of building up the relationship with Hawke's siblings....but it is what it is.
