remember in Awakening when the forums were filled with complaints about Mhairi dying? one of the most common arguments against her death was along the lines of "why not have Anders/Nathaniel be the one to die depending on my class, so she can survive if I'm not a warrior"
it was almost as common as "couldn't you just kill Oghren instead?"
well we may not have gotten our wish then but they seem to have listened for DA2. if you're a mage then poor Bethany dies, otherwise it's Carver who bites the dust. while it would've been interesting to throw in a way for Wesley to survive (seriously, how interesting would it be to see how that would play out? would he turn on the apostates once they were comparitively safe or would he perhaps begin to question if they were truly as evil as the Chantry claim?) having those two in a one-or-the-other opens up a fair bit of replayability potential on its own. and if we do get a toolset (please give us a toolset) I'm betting it won't be long until we have mods allowing us to pick which one survives despite our class
but that's starting to wander off topic. one of the biggest problems with the companions in Origins was the severe class unbalance. two mages (one of whom was rather tricky to keep on an evil playthrough and the other who'd abandon you for the final battle if you want to try for a different ending), two rogues and approximately fourty two warriors. it'll be interesting to see if the Beth/Carver thing is a one off or if there'll be other class based situations later
Not just for companions either. the more differences there are to playing as different classes (not just the combat mechanics) the more players will be encouraged to try all the classes in order to experience more of the content
I'd imagine we all want to get as much entertainment for our money as possible so replayability is a very, very good thing
and I'm wandering off my original topic again so I'm just going to shut up now
