hi,
i'm back to play the new game, i'm downloading the demo now, with enough time to spare to regurgitate an old, but ever more relevant, gripe,
am i the only player here who DOES NOT LIKE story?
don't get me wrong, i like samuel beckett and james joyce and virginia woolf and all that,
even a bit of tolkien on a sunny sunday,
but when i play rpgs i do it to invent, to be inventive, to create, and to be free...
now i know a lot of you would suggest going away and playing oblivion etc, and i do play oblivion, a lot (over 300 hours, and i've never once finished the main plot btw),
and i'll be giving two worlds 2 a go come friday,
but i also love certain things about dragon age - the combat, the graphics, the setting, and so i will play it,
even if there is zero choice in the story, and it is difficult for me to get through the dialogue, and put up with the other characters and so on,
but now,
now, (and i realise this forum has probably been inundated with similar outbursts for the last ages)
now i have to be some guy called Garret Hawke? Nice name you cheeseballs. Thanks a bunch for making me feel like a twelve year old,
(i hate the way games think they're mature enough to use foul language and have sexual themes, and yet show nothing but adolescent sensibilities when it comes to the actual writing)

i have to let it out, STOP KILLING MY BUZZ WITH YOUR FANTASY! I wanna play MY fantasy, give me the set-up, and then let me PLAY with it!
the variables seem to be getting fewer and fewer with you guys, and I have to ask... why? because mass effect clocked seven billion sales? because EA are forcing you into it?
okay so I know i'm wasting my time with this, and i know if i bothered with the toolset i could probably get what i wanted, but i would genuinely like to know if there's anyone else, on this forum in particular, who thinks rpgs are taking a wrong turn with this fully voiced thing?
it seems to me to go against the nature of roleplaying.

BW games have always been linear. I don't see your point. Just because they PR the set last name does not mean it's any morepre-defined than the son of Bhaal.

Well sorry I skimmed your comment since its a little long but:

There is really no change to Dialog in DA2 to DA since its almost the same just now with Voice.

And you comment about being the only person here who doesn't like story, the answer is Yes, yes you are

This just doesn't sound like it's your kind of game. I don't understand why you want to play it if it's not your kind of game. I am confused over all by this thread.

I think I get what you're trying to say Gimme. My favorite origins in DA was that of a female dwarf, I thought it was more interesting given the setup for that origin. Have you tried any of the TES games like Morrowind and Oblivion? Something like that may be more up your alley, since it's more free form and not linear.

The thing about not liking the story, is just that. Different people like different types of stories. Like no matter how well they write the narrative, animate the characters, or cast them, if you don't like the story that's that. It's why there are different genres. But it's cool to see you're still going to play the game. Like I said earlier, take a look at the TES games, you might like those unless you've already played them.

Your preferances are close to mine, I prefer to craft my own character and story as well, but I can enjoy Bioware games for what they are (with the exception of Jade Dynasty for some reason, can't stand that game.) The above posters are correct, Bioware games have always been pretty shoe-horney, I don't see much difference between say, KOTR and DA2. If anything with the exception of Baldurs Gate (and that just from a character building standpoint), the DA series is pretty open when compared to some of their other games. All imo of course.

Ah, I guess all those dialogue options I had when I decided to Investigate with Flemeth were my imagination then because, according to you, we suddenly have fewer choices in everything we do...right. I mean, my God, why didn't I realize it sooner! The demo is TOTALLY representative of every conversation I'll ever have in the actual game!!!!

*sarcasm*

Oh, and yeah, you can change your first name.Try Ray Bradbury Hawke or Tennesse Williams Hawke then?

*additional snark*

I don't see a voiced protagonist as a wrong turn for RPG's, just a different one. Bioware games give me a cinematic story telling experience, whereas games like Oblivion and Fallout let me create my own hero and gives me the freedom to do whatever I want with them.

How can you not like the story when we have yet to play the full game? It's like saying you know 2011 will suck, despite it only being Febuary.

As for the voice thing, there are just as many people who are happy that their character no longer stands there like a lump of rock whilst events go on around them.

I believe there's enough variables to play with. You still can customize your character appearance and there're wide variety of armor to choose. No comment on VO. If Hawke gets too annoying, find a way to mute him yourself. Official story is fun for 3 to 5 play through. Just to familiarize yourself with the world. Then enough with it. Don't get yourself too deeply connected with it. You will never satisfy. I know because I can't stand with default settings and story. My creative minds always scream for change and something new. So create your own story and mods. As long as there're toolset and a lot of supporting mods, that's all you need.

DON'T.

Seriously, don't touch that crap. It's a horrible game. Pick up Fallout: NV or Risen or wait for Witcher 2 or DX: Human Revolution or Divinity II or Drakensang: (forgot the subtitle).

Yeah, it's the exact opposite for me. If I want complete control over my character and let my imagination run wild, I play P&P RPGs with my friends. Oblivion's vast world populated by mannequins did not appeal to me one bit and no amount of imagination was going to change that. Sort of offtopic but I've read like 3 or 4 different threads complaining about the lack of race/background choices and would just like to point out that Planescape: Torment did not feature either and was absolutely no less for it. It's also pretty amusing how you say you're being forced into a mould when you yourself would force everyone else to play the type of game you'd enjoy.

That's nice OP. Go play Fallout.

Me? I came from Fallout. Seeking the exact things you hate.

If you actually can't stand having a voice translating your loose instructions to the party, don't play

the damn game. Fallout (besides having an in game skill linked to my ability to point a mouse at heads) bored me to tears with how detatched from the game I felt. I get the reverse with Bioware games.

"One man's trash is another man's treasure" and all that.

Last time I checked, Risen and NV were bugged and Risen never did get patched.

Yeah, and even BG, and BG 2.. while there were "races" there. I seem to recall that their impact was... not alot... especially Half-Orc, where you kept the human model in-game, and only saw the half-orc model on the inventory screen.

Nor do I recall it being mentioned much anywhere... beyond a simple  "You can't leace this castle to this <insert race here>. Also the Gothic series, and the Witcher. I)n those you don't even get to choose appearance, as far as I know.

I just wanna say dont play two swords. terrible terrible game.

And all RPG's have a story you MUST follow. Seriously it seems like some people want to pick every tiny detail in their RPG's when thats not an option. There is always a story you have to follow, there is only certain things ou can do and also if you dont like the voices there is a mute button on your controll.
