That big hunk of cheese was Alistair's I'm sure. What with his love of cheese and all.Upsettingshorts wrote...

It's probably some ****ty in-joke when some staff member couldn't find cheese in the fridge
More likely - I'm guessing - it's an in-joke for Dragon Age: Origins players who recall the huge wheel of cheese next to Leliana in the party camp.
Edit: This one.
The missing wheel of cheese... (Spoilers of unfathomable significance!)

Heeey, I remember Sheryl saying a hint to the DA2 plot was a wheel of cheese.
Come to think of it, Mary Kirby mentioned Phil the Dairy Farmer, who believed that cheese was the most important thing in Thedas.
The pieces are falling into place!
Well, that does sound like something Gorgonzola would do.
Anyway, the cheese is probably on the run, like Fenris. Maybe it ditched Gorgonzola for Alistair and now it's being hunted down. Everybody knows hell hath no fury like a Gorgonzola scorned.
I don't think I've used that word so many times in the same place in my life.

Maybe there will be a Cheese Guild in Kirkwall.
Only one? But there are many varieties of cheese. Different cheesemongers fighting to be champion of the farmer's market could be an interesting subplot... or main plot.

Fortunately for me, I have the good sense to keep a supply of Babybel cheeses on hand at all times. They prevent withdrawal - at least until I get my weekend pizza fix anyway.

Maybe there is someone in Kirkwall addicted to cheese, and this post is his existential cry for help?

Perhaps that is Hawke's ultimate purpose. To unite all the cheese guilds of Kirkwall under him. Hawke, Champion of Cheese. The Chantry's downfall is caused by a cheese shortage...but is the shortage because of the fighting over control of the guild, or is Hawke purposefully withholding cheese from the Chantry?Upsettingshorts wrote...

Maybe that explains the Qunari, as well. They're invading to claim the cheese, as there has been a massive cheese shortage in Par Vollen.
Hmm...yes...everything begins to come clear now.

That is an excellent and well-thought out theory, I would add it to the OP if I wasn't currently devouring a fist full of Huntsman cheese.

I think it'd encompass all sweets, they are too bloody efficient to invent it.

Qunari are too efficient. Most cultures initially develop cookies and cakes as a way to use up leftover batter from other things. Qunari plan ahead too well to have leftovers. Thus, the lack of cookies is their tragic flaw.
