From what we're told, they're random refugees.  Not worth the price of an epic magical weapon each.

Look at the way 15 pieces is treated in the City Elf Origin.  It's clear that the yearly wage for an elf is much less that 1 sovereign, and even that would suggest they'd have to keep working for a century to pay off.

Good point, but to be fair, Hawke and Pals were also random refugees. Just 'cause you're fleeing the Darkspawn doesn't mean you're worthless.

Though, you're right, even still 100 sovereigns does seem a bit much for Elves.

Hmm. who knows? The're apparantly worth setting up shop in Denerim and risking the wrath of the people aswell as the authorities (aswell as meddling Gray Wardens..) and they do sell bows worth more than that.

there is difference of being against slavery in YOUR game ... and ranting about me being pro slavery in MY game ... but to answer your question being against slavery in your game is absolutly OK roleplay-wise

I didn't mean to rant, just to point out that there is a difference between a slave and a servant. If you don't care, that's fine for me, as is whatever you do with your game

I think the largest discrepancy between the price of hiring a less than 1 sovereign slum-elf and buying a 100 sovereign slave elf is that the slave elf is a living battery for blood mages. You'd probably pay just as much for lyrium, and that is a non-renewable supply.

Given the lack of roleplaying that actually takes place on these forums and the cavalier way in which slavery was described as a fun endeavor, yeah, I can see how people would be a little bent out of shape. That said, yes, if you're playing an evil SOB, I could see owning slaves (as opposed to hiring servants/maids). Is it a mechanic I think Bioware should spend time developing? No. But if you want it and can get it in a mod, no skin off my back.



And yes, 100 sovereigns seemed like a lot to me. Anyone remember if there was reference to a "market rate" during the alienage sequence in DAO?

Or, you could just say that Hayder was attempting to bull**** you and exaggerating the amount of money involved.  "100 Sovereigns" may be shorthand for "a lot of freaking money" like "a million dollars" is to most people.

There was no mention of a market rate, however Caladrius offers you 100 sovereigns to let him go free.
