Dragon Age Wiki says that it is possible to pickpocket 20 gold from Rogek in Dust Town if the requirements are met.
Leliana has both stealing and stealth trees maxed outed and has about 52 cunning, yet I still can't pickpocket the said amount of gold, only random loot. Was anyone able to do it?

I tried to pickpocket him before and after the initial conversation. Even tried while in combat, but still no gold.

You have to give him the 40 gold first, then you can pickpocket the 20 gold from him. The message will be you have recieved an item, but it'll be the 20 gold.
