 Just had the following problem in my demo run..

Basically, after one battle, dear Sister got a levelup, and I thought 'Okay, doesn't matter, she'll meet the Ogre in few minutes' time' - so I left her without allocating her new skillpoints and statpoints. Naturally, her portrait icon kept the 'levelup' overlay.

Now, the problem was, when the next battle began, I wasn't able to switch over to her via clicking on the portrait - it looks like the game interpreted the clicks as 'I want to allocate levelup stats', which is not possible during a fight. So, as a result, I had to leave her to the AI completely.

And that's it, really. If your companion has unspent points, you can't switch to him in mid-battle, which, imo, is either a design bug or some oversight.

I had this problem, but bypassed it by clicking as far as I could from level up arrow.

I had the same problem too, even my tactics screen is messed up. When I hover my cursor over a tactics box, it doesn't light up and when I try clicking the box, nothing happens, or the tactics get changed to something I don't want. I always had to press "back" in order to set each individual's tactics.

It has happened to me as well, I partially solved it by selecting characters with the F1-F2... shortcut keys.

You actually can level them up during a fight. At least, I was able to. When you click on the level up button, it will take you directly to your character's screen. Then you can click on their character portrait and level them up, hit back, and everything will be back to normal. I don't know if that's a bug or not.

for me it was when i clicked them to level up it just quick swapped back to main char and after a few dozen trys finaly worked

Companion Portraits are still able to be clicked control of companion. It's just limited to the right side when the Level Up overlay is active.
