Bioware don't give a toss about fans or fan views they care about MONEY they partnered with EA for the sole reason of making more money.

They have dumbed down both ME and DA as a pathetic attempt to appeal to the mass market and that's it.

I have no doubt that they became part of EA due to profit. Bioware are a company, profit is an important thing to a company. I am glad they are part of EA now as it hopefully will allow them to continue creating what I personally find to be great games.

Regarding 'dumbing' down of their games. I do not really see how DA2 has been dumbed down from DA:O, atleast not on PC, I cannot comment on 360. The tactical option is deffinately still there, and I will be playing the game on nightmare in the same whay I played DA:O on nightmare. Removal of an isometric view doesn't count as dumbing down.
Combat is flashier and more responsive, but that just means I need to think on my feet  faster when playing, and it means I can intercept an enemy heading for my mage as I intended rather than watching my warrior slowly turn and shuffled around into position while my mage is being battered to death.
I can't comment on the story, but from what I have seen so far it promises to be just as epic and entertaining as any other Bioware game that I have played (the majority).

I just can't see how the game has been dumbed down.

Allow me to enlighten you:

• Icons beside dialogue choices, to tell you exactly what to pick, instead of letting you read and use your brain to determine what the intent is behind each line.

• The item star rating system, so the game can hand-hold you and tell you exactly what to equip instead of you, again, using your brain to figure out what to use.

• Friendly Fire only in nightmare instead of being a toggle-able option, because they were afraid someone would accidentally turn it on, not realize what they did, and get mad and quit because it is too hard.

The game has the lowest common denominator in mind.

<3
---> choosing the right item for you, on your own ,is an essential thing to do in a rpg +   is a great motivation to play the game :D (succesful since diablo 1 and before that )

I fear that, more and more, the play gets reduced to a spectator <_<

Directed towards the folks saying Bioware is only about money: I'm just not seeing it. I mean, the dlc stuff is kinda silly, but it's not as bad as other EA games *Cough*sims3*cough*.

Directed towards the OP: I highly agree with you. I almost never play Bioware games strictly for gameplay, I regard them more as Choose your own adventure books with better graphics. ^^

Why do people forget that Bioware games are about the journey. Well that is what i think.
I am a very loyal customer to Bioware and I have only played mass effect 1 and 2 and dragon age: origins.
After all of those 3 games when the credits come up i put my xbox360 controller down, sit back to listen to the awesome credit music and say to myself 'Wow'. I am always left gobsmacked and with a sense of accomplishment when i finish a Bioware game and I know it is only a game.
The art direction for DA2 I am not over the moon about, the combat i think is an improvement, but these two things are not what DA2 will be about for me. It is all about the story and the journey you are taken on. Call of Duty is a nice looking game but when i finish the single player I think ok now multiplayer. It isn't memorable or 'epic'. When I finish a 50-60hour playthrough of a Bioware game i just am amazed and upset that it has ended lol. This is all my opinion and not a fact or anything. But the change in graphics and combat and the speech system i welcome, because I know that to me this game will deliver where it is most important. It will be another epic journey to remember.

Kudos on the post, I'd have to agree with you.

Right you are Alex.  I would also add that Bioware's games involve the entire person, from the psyche to the physical:  Your mind is constantly involved...  Your emotions, your personal and moral beliefs are put to the test...  your body is  physically active as you plan tactically, evading the enemy's trap, planning the next move to make when you are faced with a challenging opponent, to the end result when such a foe is vanquished: sweaty palms, a racing heart.

To me, Bioware games are not simply games that take you from point A to point B, but their games are a rollercoaster fun ride that challenges your entire being.  Hence, it is for this reason that I am a Bioware's fan, aside the fact that women are viewed equally as males and are respected.  We are appreciated and our voices and womanhood are embraced.  Posted Image

Yes the game is about the journey not about graphics or what a certain character looks like or if they have big breasts or small breasts. It's about the character themselves, their personality, their likes and dislikes. It's a story being told, like books only interactive.

Bioware has always been able to tell a good story. Having played from the original Baldur's Gate all the way up and including the Dragon Age 2 demo, I have yet to be displeased.  I haven't seen anyone do better, yet.

I look at Games in terms of the storyline and the characters, not in terms of the eye candy or the epic lolz. I like the stories in Bioware's games, and I think that it is improper to compare Mass Effect to Dragon age. They are set in completely different storyline genres.

I wouldn't say that 'storyline' is what sells Bioware to me in particular. The stories contained therein tend to be fairly basic, usually given color by interesting twists on character archetypes and the occaisonal 'story within the story'. As a developer they are one of the few that bother to create subtext within their stories or enough depth to provoke thought that I enjoy (i.e. DA:O discussing sacrfice, the ME series distionction the value of existence etc.).

Many people discussing dumbing down and I think the changes to the dialog system have illustrated more specifically what they mean. With certain elements made more transparent part of their 'game' lost. That is part of what they enjoyed was figuring out mechanics and skills so they as a part of defeating challenges. They enjoyed that side of things and the feeling of truimph that would come from working out the elements and getting past otherwise tough encounters. The more the game explains the less they have to work out then a part of the game that they enjoyed is taken away. Simplistically it is often mentioned as 'dumbed down' but it's more a question of the game explaining it's system so clearly that their is nothing left to 'work out'.

Still I don't think we have seen enough of the game to be certain there is not hidden depth to discover so it's a rather unfounded or thinly founded fear at this point. If one went back to the early days of any of the legendary games mentioned 'BG series, KOTOR' many players made the same claims about them when they were newer. It's simply a question of how much people enjoy 'figuring it out'.

Still Bioware in my opinion puts more heart into their work then a great deal of developers around at the moment, as well as placing a high regard on the quality of it's writing/dialogue. Should one compare the writing of DA:O to say perhaps Fallout 3? Fallout 3 had some great subtext but the writing in unto itself was pretty atrocious.

Great post. Before this game, I would have totally agreed with you.

I've played more Bioware games than ME1-2 and Origins but this demo leaves me uninspired and for the first time I'm not excited for a release day Bioware release...perhaps the formula is getting old for me? Hope you enjoy the journey, just wish I had as much excitement as you do.

I know what you mean. I became a Biofan from KOTOR onwards and the games are starting to feel very same old same old. Same old story themes, same old party gameplay etc. It would be nice if Bioware made something that broke the formula but was still an RPG. I wouldn't mind if we only controlled a single person with no party.

does this sum up the debate?

Warning: Spoilers from NWN2 follow!

Captain Ballard: Lord Nasher is concerned about m'lord's well-being, in light of the recent deaths of m'lord's associates.

Lord Cyran Tavorick: Bah! If Nasher cared about m'lord's well being, he'd buy me a potion of youth. Failing that, he'd send me a harem. Eighty-four girls, one for each of my years. Yes? Maybe?

End of Spoiler

Well said Lilacs, I'd also like to add every BioWare game gives you a whole new experience, as to which you can dream about. While BioWare makes those dreams into a full interactive experience.
