PC or PS3 Version?

Didn't find this discussed elsewhere, but in case I missed it, sorry for the dupe. At any rate, just got a PS3 last week and figured I'd get Dragon Age as it's first real game (I'm a total PS3 newb, but been playing PC games since DOS). However, I've been reading the hardcore RPG enthusiasts (and Bioware fans) say they're getting the PC version of the game over any of the console versions. Now I have a dilemma! Should I get the PS3 version and play on my 52-inch big screen, or should I get the PC version given the specs below:

Intel Core2 CPU
6400@2.13GHz
2.00 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

What I'm after here are graphics and performance comparisons. Will the game look/run better on the PC or the PS3?

Thanks for any advice!

You must be joking. Really.

There are more issues regarding platform differences than performance and graphics, though; assuming you aren't already aware of them and have decided that they aren't important.

I've got a 65" and a 360 but I'm buying DA:O for the PC for the camera controls and increased difficulty. I made the decision after watching some of the YouTube videos.

Sorry, JEBesh, but I didn't run across any platform discussions on the forum. If you could be so kind, do you have a link to the most relevant and I will go there to research?

As far as other issues, I'm only aware of the key-mapping (getting all the details from the PC keyboard mapped to the console controllers).

Personally I say the PC version. You're going to be about the same as far as graphics go I'd imagine, you get it two weeks sooner, -only- the PC version can use the Toolset, and I'd imagine the custom content would be a bit more manageable than consoles, as it's what folks are going to be building it on, thus making it a bit more plentiful to boot.

Tyveron, what are the differences regarding camera controls? I've discovered on some of the demo games I've downloaded for the PS3 that I certainly am far more proficient with the keyboard and mouse than I am with those joysticks and buttons! And what of the increased difficulty? Will the PC version be harder to play?

Thanks for the advice, pharos...I did hear, however, that all platforms will be releasing the same day (Nov. 3rd in the US). As far as custom content, I've never been much for using mods and whatnot; at least not since Battlefield 1942! :)

I am far more a PC guy than a console guy, but I sure hate to think I blew 300 bucks on a game machine that won't get much use! ;)

Forgive my bitterness, but this is pretty much the most beaten to death topic of all time on the DA forums. Here's a link to one picked at random, but you've got your own thread now. No sense in bumping another one: Click here.

Graphics will be similar with that setup. But (1) there are gameplay differences, and (2) you can hook up your vidcard to the big TV.

My advice is, buy the PC version and later on upgrade your video card. Honestly, from what you've said I think you will enjoy this game more on a PC.

It's ok, JEBesh! I totally understand beating a dead horse! On forums in which I'm a heavy participant, I get annoyed by the newb who can't seem to find a well-worn topic! So, I know where you're coming from! Thanks for entertaining my rawness here!

flem1, what sort of "gameplay differences" are you talking about? And, seeing you have a "Can I Run It" sig, what of my graphics card? Will I have to play it with reduced graphics? Or does it appear I can run it at a fairly decent clip? Will it run smoother on the PS3 or my PC given the specs I noted above?

Again, thanks all for the help!

Hi Sheff...yeah, that's one of the reasons I grabbed the PS3. I can't upgrade my card now on the PC without basically redoing the entire machine. My motherboard, from what I understand, can't take a better card. Seeing so many of the games I'd played over the past year all coming out on PS3, I figured I'd get that machine and just quit upgrading my PC every couple of years for about $800 a crack! :)

I say the PC but I doubt you can run it at the highest setting because of the Geforce 8600GT on your PC.  You can probably get more out of the PC version in the future too only because of the free user contents available in the future.

Later!

Thanks, f14dude. Will the PS3 run the graphics at the equivalent of the PC's "highest" settings, do you know?

Sorry to hear about the video card upgrade issue. Last time I upgraded my video card, I had to take metalworking tools to the case to fit in it.

Well anyway... with the spec you have right now, it will look better on the PS3, I think. That depends on what resolution you want, of course. It may be possible to tweak various settings... but sadly without a tech demo (and the character creator does not count) you have no way of knowing.

The console version will be restricted to a much closer, over the shoulder camera view, whereas the PC has the freedom to pull the camera back in a sort of isometric style a la BG. Certain larger encounters have also been rebalanced on the console due to memory issues. On some of the large scale PC fights -- that is 30-40 enemies -- it will be rebalanced on the consoles to have a smaller amount sometimes come in waves. Some of the individual enemies in encounters like this will be stronger to make up for the lower quantity.

On PC, you are also able to control multiple party members at once, again a la BG. You are limited to switching between party members one at a time in a more action style on the console. As a result of this, there is no friendly fire on normal mode of the consoles, whereas the PC mode has 50% friendly fire. The difficulties will be somewhat harder on the PC because of this.

You're about medium graphics (maybe a touch higher), which is where the consoles sit. You will also get shorter load times (consoles = low RAM!), camera zoom-out to an isometric view, the ability to move characters by clicking on a destination, and the ability to multi-select. Battles will be full-scale, not reduced (though a dev has hinted that PS3 may have more characters onscreen than Xbox?), though console enemies will either be tougher or come in waves to make up for it. And friendly fire from area spell attacks has full effect on PC on Hard and 50% or Normal, while on console it's 50% on Hard and 0% on normal.

While I'm at it:  PC won't natively support console controllers, though you can probably map it with an interface program, while the consoles won't support KB/mouse.  Mods will all come to PC, while top community stuff *may* get to console eventually if Bio can cut thru Microsoft and Sony's red tape.  PC will have toolset, of course, console won't.

These have all been hashed out 100x elsewhere, I'm afraid. I'd suggest you search the forum except I'm not sure how that works on this new site. ;)

JEBesh, thanks for the details! The mention of large scale PC fights brings up the issue of lag on my PC rig. So that's a consideration....Thanks for the tip!

Sheff, thanks for the sympathy! We PC'ers need it, eh? Upgrading...always upgrading!

flem1, are we talking 6 of one 1/2 dozen of another then, in my case? Given my PC specs, would playing on it or the PS3 be a toss-up?

Graphically, probably. But you have the big list of other differences. I think it's PC by a landslide, but read and decide for yourself.

I wonder if I purchase it on one platform (PC) try it out and find it doesn't run well, if I can exchange it for another platform (PS3). Hmmm......

Your PC beats mine and I just switched my pre-order from console to PC. I decided that I'd rather take a graphic hit and get more from the game and community. Also, 3 skills mapped to the face buttons (toggle) just didn't excite me. I'd much rather just click a party member and use the toolbar. I was told that I (we) could run medium settings, which is probably close to consoles anyways. If it's relevant, Oblivion looked identical for me on both versions.

I'm buying the game on PS3 because after so many hours of WoW on my pc.....i've been enjoying the consoles once again and have no problem playing the game with a small drop in graphics and a different interface. I will gladly sit in comfort playing on my tv screen instead of sitting at my computer desk. I could care less about the toolset and mods. I believe bioware made the game just fine how it will play and sure mods may make it slightly better but it will be fine without them. Your PC will be able to run it but not at max settings. I do find it very comical that there are so many PC elitist fanboys on these boards though.
