I'm just saying, what if? I'm buying this game because I'm old school probably been playing RPGs before some of this forum were even born. I used to be the owner of RPGDungeon.com one of the biggest Baldur's Gate sites on the web if not the biggest. I was in Ultima Online Beta for crying out loud and was there the night Lord British (Richard Garriot) got killed by the dude that stole the fireball scroll or whatever it was he used. I almost took damage from it. I complained that he got banned. It was LB's fault he forgot to turn on his invulnerability. He should have known an assasination attempt was coming.

I started playing D&D in the late 80's and even placed 2nd in a college tourney at Ga. Tech and my group drove all the way from the University of Florida to play in it. That's how big of a geek I am (my char was a Halfling Thief named BoneShank). We won $500 bucks which was big money back then. You went in and ran the same mod and the group that got the furthest wins, it was not possible to finish it but we got further than only one group and guess what school they were from (Yep Ga Tech.) you guessed it, home cooking.

I loved the older games, Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale but they had a character development system that took years and years to perfect. This character system has not blown me away so far. What are the racial advantages and disadvantages? Where is the dual classing? Don't get me wrong I have preordered, but 3 races and classes. Any old school D&Der has to say Huh? That's bare minimum these days. I had really hoped they would invent a couple new classes that would make me wonder what they do. Fighter, Mage Rouge.....Yawn. We've been there before.

Look all I'm saying is it looks like they have created a foot long hotdog that will take you a long time to eat that is smothered with mustard, ketchup, relish and onions (in the form of cutscenes).......I just hope they didn't forget the weiner.Posted Image

It's simple. We sacrifice someone by fire to the BioWare gods for rain. I mean good, very good patches.

Even if the game does not, they are packaging it with the single most powerful toolset to hit the modding scene in the past 5 years. If NWN was any indication, that alone is going to give this game plenty of longevity for a very looooooong time.

Break our pencils. Burn our character sheets. Flush our dice. Oh wait never mind this isn't DnD.... the elves here are slaves!

Normally I'd share your worry, but Bioware has yet to let me down. Every game of theirs I've tried I spent countless hours playing, replaying and yammering about to my friends until they tell me to shut up. :D

Not that they don't make mistakes, there are things I wish I could've changed about Jade Empire, NWN and Mass Effect, but the good outweighs the bad by such a margin that I never feel disappointed.

Well, the thing is that well done RPG's are a rarity now-a-days. I too remember the days of the IWD's, BG's, FO/FO2, and the like.

I don't own all Bioware games, some just didn't appeal to me, but still, they are the one company that has shown to be capable of producing quality games. Even though I do object strongly to some aspects of the marketing, the game itself is produced by very talented people.

NWN was..., well..., not so good, but SoU was good, and HotU was great. Jade Empire never appealed to me for some reason, but ME was fun. I have spent hard earned money on games I thought were good, only to be disappointed (FO3 comes to mind).

Yeah, due to the crisis, money is tight, but I will still trust Bioware. Until they thoroughly disappoint me. I am already kind of turned off a bit due to the marketing, and if it was anyone else but Bioware, I would have walked away. But as it is, I will keep on believing that  they will once again provide me with great entertainment.

Heck, I still play the IWD's, BG,s, and the EXP's of NWN. I very definitely have gotten my money's worth in the past with Bioware, and will put my trust in them now.

From my experience most, if not all, games (but experiences in general) don't live up to the hype - expectations. Then again, everyone forms different expectations so its hard to tell.

First I was expecting BG3, but the more I learn about the game the more I am getting under impression it's not gonna happen. Still, I (irrationally) hope it will be BG3, but chances are I will be slightly disappointed unless the game will offer such experience that my sentiment about BG series will become irelevant.

To me it's like with first love, it can hardy ever be the same. Happened to me with System Shock2 and Bioshock for example.

Summary: the higher expectations, the higher chance they won't fulfill.

/shrug Fable tanked and everyone got on the "omg this sucks" bandwagon(and still are), but its still one of my all time favorite games for what it is and not what it was 'supposed' to be. The only person who makes your expectations is yourself, and if it doesnt live up to your hype you dont have anyone to blame but yourself.

I also say that so far Bioware has never let me down.. but on top of that.. EA has let me down.. many, many, many, many times. I was very annoyed when EA purchased Bioware.. Bioware was or seemed mostly about games for gamers.. but EA has always felt like games for money. I'm hoping for the best.

i guess i have to agree with you on this.  my guess would be that since obviously BioWare is not new to the D&D RPG arena, they will plan to release the more developed content including dual classing, additional races/classes as "purchaseable" DLC....which is horsecrap...but whatever.

<- also a first release UltimaOnline gamer.  Played all the single player Ultima series back to the start.  even played some of the horrible ones there near the end....ugh.

That's sort of what I was eluding to in my post. I have been avoiding EA for many years, and my heart sank when hearing that Bioware was absorbed by them. They have such a bad reputation because of their destructive attitude, and lousy customer service, I've always pictured them in my mind like the Gelatinous Cube in HotU. I so hope that Bioware doesn't end up like Maxis, Westwood, etc.

Dunno I think it will live up to the hype, i trust Bioware and i trust them even more because unlike bg, bg2, iwd, iwd2, and so on. Teaming up with EA their budget will (or was) limitless on this game. EA did not make it Bioware did. Bioware needed extra funding for the projects that they put out, to make them even better, so they had to team with EA ( who's wallet is thick as abrick a Fort Knox).

i worry about the same thing as the OP, i find when anything is overhyped it never seems to be as good as it was hyped to be....this happens with movies for me all the time. I too have faith in Bioware but EA worries me....I blame EA for ruining Warhammer Online and I was extremely hyped for that game so hopefully the same doesnt happen here...

I too have pre-ordered but not the Collector's Edition, I will not make that mistake again...and if this game isn't as good as it is hyped up to me I may not preorder again

It's a little odd that you first bragg about how hardcore of an RPG-Geek you are, while revealing that you didn't even bother to read a little into the class-diversion in Dragons Age. I mean "three classes"? They're the starter classes, just for your info.

I think a lot of people were disappointed in Fable I / II because of the hype. The hype is not going to ruin DA:O for me. Keep a sense of perspective, and remember it's just another game... albeit one made over 5+years.

I don't rely on hype, I only care for a good RPG on my lap... err. I mean comp. Yes, comp.

But the specialties really just make those initial three groupings rather than classes.  Not unlike 2nd edition AD&D with Fighters, Paladins, Rangers, and Barbarians were all Warriors - and at level 1 were pretty similar.

I've been waiting some something akin to dual-classing for years; I never was able to convert my PnP characters to 3E as a result.  I've stopped holding my breath, though I do hope the DA ruleset is sufficiently detailed to allow nuanced application in character creation.  And even if it isn't yet, maybe it will be going forward.

If AD&D level complexity is what you want from a ruleset, I don't really expect DAO to give you that.  Certainly not yet.

That's one of the reasons I'm supporting Bioware. Maybe they did need the funds, but maybe they'll make enough money to shake lose, or be able to raise their voices against EA , and go back to their roots, in a manner of speaking.

As for the pitchfork and torches, my pitchforks will own your torches anytime. <insert winking eye, raspberry giving grin here>
