You are really telling on yourself now JEBesh, Play D&D pen and paper or, BG, or IWD and tell me this char system even compares. It's WEAK. But the cool graphics and cutscenes impress the console players, Why blame them that's where the money is I'm all about capatialism and that's what the gamers want, but if you think the system compares with D&D's from the previous games then you haven't played them.
Note that Bioware also made BG and NWN, so I'd like to think they know what they are doing.
Also note that all D&D has are four classes. Fighter, Cleric, Wizard and Rogue. Everything else are just boring rehashes of the same classes. Druid? Cleric with a focus on nature. YAWN! Barbarian? Fighter who can rage. Yawn! Monk? The cheesiest class ever. Paladin? Wow, a cleric who can fight like a fighter, but doesn't have the cool awesome powers of a cleric... Yawn, multiclass next time. Sorcerer? Just another variation of the Wizard. Ranger? A fighter who apparently can do some things similar to a rogue, except in nature. And heh as to chose between a bow or dual-wielding now. Yawn. The Bard? A rogue who can cast spells and fight and sing. Sing? Seriously?
No really. While D&D offers a ton of base classes, are they realy all that varied? It doesn't really get interesting until you start introducing Psionics and even then it's just another magic system.
