LOL thats absolute B.S..  How many of the high profile and upcoming games this year has a female lead character?  I can't think of any off the top of my head.  Crysis 2, Witcher 2, Deus Ex Human revolution, Gears of War 3, Batman Arkham City etc all have male leads.

Did you think Call of Duty MW2 sold millions of copies because of it's "hot female main character?"  Image IPB

Actually, market data suggests that having female leads hurt sales, rather than increasing them because most gamers (particularly the hardcore gamers) tend to be males, and most males identify with their own gender primarily.

The statistics from Mass Effect show that 81% of people played DudeShep (whether once or many times is unknown) vs the 19% that played FemShep.

And despite how many people on this forum are proclaiming FemHawke the new queen, I guarantee that if Bioware publishes the stats, there will be many more people that play as DudeHawke than FemHawke.

I support female gamers who want to play as female, because I understand that it's natural for people to identify with their own gender when making a PC; unless you're one of those people that play "remotely."

But if DA2 had FemHawke as the lead, sales would tank..

When I look at FemHawke, I see a young woman that looks more like a runway model than a hardened warrior.  Her neck is slim, and her arms are scrawny, her voice high and delicate, yet I'm supposed to believe she can whoop all that ass?

Suspension of belief is a critical component of any game, and game developers have a hell of a time making female ACTION heroines that are attractive to look at, while still being capable.....which is why most game developers tend to forgo female lead characters altogether because ultimately it's a futile venture, as DA2 suggests.

The artists that came up with FemHawke didn't even try to make her look capable in any way.  Instead, they just focused on making her look attractive..

MaleHawke on the other hand looks strong, and has a deep and commanding voice.  He also looks to be in his 30s, while FemHawke looks to be in her 20s..

Why does this discrepancy exist, when both Hawkes are supposed to be the same person?

To anyone with an iota of sense, it's obvious..

From what I've heard of Lady Hawke and Mike Hawke, they're both on par with each other. Some lines are ready differently, but both are equally valid. There's only one line I've noticed one of the actors delivering in a way that I consider superior, and that was Mike Hawke's delivery of one of the Humourous lines.

Do you honestly believe that Lady Hawke's voice and avatar fits the kind of person you'd expect to be doing what she's doing in the game?  Image IPB

Yes, because voice and appearance are not always reflective of ones abilities and actions.

Jennifer Hale is legendary and is very good at what she does, she's been voice acting since I was a little kid. Maybe if they had Steve Blum voice Male Shep... He would have brought a lot more personality to the character.

So you are saying If you keep Crysis 2's graphic engine, its mechanics, and replace all its male leads with hot female leads?  it will not sell better?

Let say instead of Bat man it is Cat Women or Bat Girl

Or Witcher instead of Witcher it is the Female Witcher?

I can guarentee you all will sell better.

As for Battle Field, you think it will not sell better if they made female soldiers the predominate model in the game?

You seems to think that because people who play males will turn a game down because it also features a hot female lead.

But that is not true.  So by adding and marketing a female lead you lose nothing and will gain more sales.  It is just the way it is.  Sex sells - always.

As for why most game company does not develop female leads - do you know what the rating boards do to you when you dipict violence against women?  You can have a bare chested male lead, you can blast his arms off.  You do the same to a woman you loose half your market because of ratings.

Thats a general answer thats seemingly correct, but you are missing the point entirely..

What I mean is, do you think FemHawke, looking like a 130lb runway supermodel, could wear heavy armor and swing a greatsword in battle?

And yes I know that it's just a fantasy game, but suspension of belief is still a factor.  The truth is, if FemHawke was real, I wouldn't expect her to be doing any sort of hard labor at all, much less fighting in wars.

Still waiting on a femHawke CGI trailer ala Destiny.

I don't know what people's problem with femHawke is if obviously male Hawke is the character Bioware features most.

I don't even get the topic.

Not one single advert or official trailer features a female character. Or ever will - this is Chris Priestly's personal hobby-horse and Bioware will NEVER feature a female lead on the box or in a trailer.

And you're saying the female version has 'usurped' ManShep?

Shame on you.

Considering I probably wont play male Hawke Im really appreciative that Bioware have taken the incentive to include Lady Hawke in the demo footage. Im also really glad they have spent so much time on her and its very evident in the demo. Its a huge step forward after ME2's treatment of femshep (although lets not go there again).

DA2 has a great female protagonist as well as a male one. Its great they decided to show her off and give her some recognition and attention.

One of these days Id love to see Biowareshow a trailer with a main female protagonist. They;ve done the men thing so many times that throwing a bone now and then cant hurt. They also dont need to ONLY show women trailers. Make both!

In a game that has the ability to pick genders, i think one shouldnt be forgotten just to appeal to the masses that are 18-34 men.

Chris Priestly has made it clear that will NEVER happen.

He blames Jade Empire.

We're never gonna see a single Bioware trailer or box with a female protagonist. Evar.

I don't think any 130lb person would be able to swing a greatsword in battle.  It is just a fantasy game and I and many others would rather play the game as LadyHawke.  If LadyHawke is not believable enough for you, then enjoy your manly MaleHawke who uses spells on people.  That is completely believable. ^_^

Is it me or has MaleHawke been usurped by Lady Hawke?  In most of the latest demos and stuff, all we see is Lady Hawke.  I'm not necessarily complaining, but it is kind of a switch from the earlier trailers that focused on MaleHawke.

And yet people are anticipating Catwoman's appearance in Arkham City. All the games you have listed are sequels. They're highly anticipated not because they have a male lead but because the game before it was good.

Obviously, it sold so well because of its engaging male characters, not because of its highly regarded multiplayer system.

Why? Because people are superficial enough to buy it based only on the lead's gender and not because, oh gee, Origins was an amazing game? If so, I've lost faith in humanity.

Swords aren't that heavy. Agility =/= Strength. Fighting smart and clean as a person of smaller stature is entirely possible. How many stealth killers are big and brawny?

I'm glad that they have been using femhawke in the game stuff being shown. Women in games have been woefully understated. They are usually relegated to tech roles to support the 'manly' hero. Or they are relegated to magic using roles again to support the 'manly' hero's in the games like Final Fantasy. Only 2 games of final fantasy has seen women as the main protagonist. FF6 and FF13. Many games always have a 'manly' hero and no feminine ones.

So yeah I want to see more women being the hero's I want to see women stepping up in games and saying "I can do it just as well as you can" and kicking bad guy butt. There are more than enough games out there with the "man" as the hero. Go look 99% of games has a guy as the main protagonist, as the hero of the story.

I like it and won't be ashamed that I support FemHawke and all female heros/protagonists in games.

Yes, he blamed JE's sales on the fact that there's a woman on the cover of JE.  I wish he would explain why KOTOR didn't tank with Bastila on the cover?
