Am I the only one who dislikes the main character having a voice?

I found that with the voice it makes things that are ment to be high drama very poor, example in Origins during the Human Noble and the City Elf Female, the dialogue non voiced was more powerful during the events that happened, that say the event in the demo which felt souless and cold after what happens during the ogre fight.

Cause of the voice your char restricted in using his/her emotions, it's hard to make a computer made human show emotion and for it to match the voice aswell. Ofc are some examples that it can be done right, but with that ogre event it wasn't good tbh.

Don't get me wrong i don't mind voiced player chars, but in rpgs it looks awfull if it isn't done right to fit the stage, look at west end plays, if the actors can't show emotion during a sad event, then the play fails and people don't go to see it as it nothing but people reading from a autocue.

I thought giving the main character a voice (and a name even) was a bad idea.  It puts too many limits on the main character.  I knew I seemed to be in the minority on this, but I can't be the only one can I?

DA:O was disappointing because the main character did not have a voice. Main characters without voices and personalities like the Warden are extremely boring.

It also makes the story more personal to have a voiced, named character. It only slightly takes away from customization. I'd say the positive outweigh the negatives when it comes to this.

It does if the voice actor is no good.

I agree with the OP. A detailed text response was better. I was simply "Warden". A title is better than a name. Now I am having "Hawke" and his shoddy voice forced on me.

I really like the main character having a voice. Silent Protaganists are stupid and boring. It disconnects you from the gameworld when your character is a mute, it makes you not part of whats happening. I dont know how anyone can enjoy mute PCs, but then  there are always hardcore RPGers that just cant let go of the past and embrace the future.

Female Shepard is just awesome, i love her voice and how she personifyes my character. From what I seen of the demo, I think Female Hawke is going to do the same. Thanks to Bioware for voicing the PC.

I guess it all boils down to imagination. To me, who's got the imagination of a lobotimized Sandal, the warden, despite the colourful conversation choices seemed about as emotional as Owen, the quartermaster of the circle tower.

Therefore I enjoy the voicing and personalization immensely. To someone who likes to make believe that their character uses their voice and can imagine facial expressions it's probably not equally appreciated.

And here is the problem with the broadening of the audience. You just want to play a interactive movie where you are told who, why, when, and what whereas there were other people who filled in their own blanks and often gave themselves a much more reward experience than anything a video game writer would've. Combine excellent story with margin for this and you get KotOR. Not enough and you get Mass Effect.

voiced main characters are the worst thing that happened to Biowares games.

they kill the immersion as you can't identify to your character and you don't know what your character will say.

they kill the pace of theconversations

they are boring, one half of the conversation is spent watching your character telling you what you already know.

Only if you make him boring.  He's your character.  Everything he is is because you made him so.

The days of emotionless, voiceless characters presenting us with selections of text, making us feel like the NPCs, completely disconnected from the character were interacting with are over. Get over it, or don't either way its gone.

It is only emotionless because some people cannot read properly.  It is like saying "Reading shakespare is an emotionless experience."  I can guarentee that alot of people would much rather read shakespear than to have it butchered into a dialogue wheel with strange adlibs.

Bioware make very cinematic RPGs that tell a story more than set you loose in a world. If Fallout 5 has a set character with a voice I will punch someone but for a Bioware RPG I think it is the best route.

Why does every one have too complain about the game. I mean seriously it's like you just use it for topics or to complain about bioware

What would they call your character then? In DA:O they called him Warden because that's what he was [And there weren't much left in Ferelden, so when someone says 'Warden',it's you.]
I think Hawke [while I do think it's like spelling easy with a 'Z'] is fine enough. Wish they could say his first name if you left it all default though.

Obviously they've had to reduce the amount of dialog and possible responses since its not all text now.

I hate Male Hawke's voice.

Can't stop thinking of Lord Vaughn, who dies in every one of my games. Why must he live on? o:

Yeah, voiced prot is definitely not something I'm looking forward to. I hated it in Mass Effect. It was usually fine, but when it wasn't right it stuck out so bad it usually had me yelling at my screen.

DA2 wins. End of Thread.

Actually there were a couple times where Marian responded and I thought "honey, either say something that makes sense or just shut up."  Not because of the voice, but the dialogue.  It seems by making it so pithy, they made it sound kind of dumb.  I'll have to hear more to properly judge, but so far, not impressed by the dialogue at all.

oh god, that castillon needs to cheer up line. the paraphrased line was so good, but what she ended up saying was... i felt ashamed for her

Yeah that was one of those spots.  Marian looks cool, but what if we find out that Carver was not the real herpity derp in the family?  Image IPB
