It's more a question of what DirectX your video card supports. And to figure that out, you'd google your video card, as I assure you normal people do not have this stuff memorized.

So what's the official info on these high-res textures? Do these come with the game, are they an add-on, are they user mods? I'm sorry I'm not in the loop.

I have a laptop card that's comparable to a 5780M (ati mobility radeon). I'm not sure if that's below recommended or just barely meeting it.

They are stupidly small images, but the textures are noticeably higher-res in the high-rest shot. For the easiest example, just look at the pillar behind Hawke.inSPECTRE Shepard wrote...

Just a slope or gentle undulation to make it look less like a fake digital environment would be good.Blacklash93 wrote...
It's not like we want the tiles to look really uneven next to each other. High Town is supposed to look well-kept and even, anyway.

What I'm actually interested to see is if circles are actually circles and not octagons, for example, with horse-cart wheels
I think they said they put most of (I think that means all of) the tesselation effort on the terrain. That is, the mountains will no longer look like pointy pyramids if you have DX11 cards. I'm guessing we're left with octagonal wheels though

Oh, it's really nice to see in DX 11, the ground has more three-dimensional effect than the flat ground of DX 9.
In the DX11 shots, the ground is actually three-dimensional. That effect is tessellation, with which the GPU dynamically alters the poly-count of a model in real-time. I don't know if it's based on a heightmap like normal and parallax maps, but it's not just a clever texture. The model is truly deforming.

ATI would suggest a 5700 series mobility card is capable of DirectX 11. And I believe, even though it's a laptop card, it beats out the ATI 3850.

The ground is even and we're looking at square tiles here. There's no real need for a slope or undulation. Barely any games do it anyway.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

I'd wait until you actually see it while the game is playing normally before making judgements.

It's still flat and level. I've been bothered by flat and level floors in game environments for years, and finally DAO came along and didn't have them.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

But now they're back.

I also like the changes to how XP is awarded (though ME2 was better), and I like that we can now level-up during combat (DAO didn't allow that).ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

Oooh, I also love the XP change, but I thought ME2's was crap. I'm not sure how I feel about leveling up during combat. Leveling up at all is already an abstraction, so any sort of "realism" argument is out the window, but maybe it just seems "silly" that I should suddenly get attrubute points and a new skill in the middle of hacking up enemies.

I think you are misinterpreting my response. I wasn't saying it was similar to the 3850. I was saying since the 3850 is the recommended baseline, your card should be more than good enough.

The sad part is that OC GTX 580 runs the unsupported "Very High" setting in the demo at a whooping 11 fps
1) Some bioware folks told us to not even run the demo in DX11 as apparently its broken in in the demo. The final game has the DX11 performance issues fixed/finalized.
2) I had like 10-20 fps too, but then I installed the latest nvidia drivers for my GTX 570 and it jumped to 30-40 fps in the demo
I know it is locked in the in game setting, but you can enable it in the Configuration Program. It is funny seeing black mess on the floor where the 3-d ridges suppose to be.
Nah, you can set whatever you want in the configurator, but when you launch the game it drops the graphics to only "high", no matter what you set in the configurator. You'll notice there's no tesselation in the demo.

Did you mix up the numbers there? If it's a 5870M then that's more than good enough - better than recommended level for DX9 and not hugely slower than the recommended DX11 cards. This chart is useful as an estimate of how laptop cards compare to desktop ones.

Awesome! Thanks for the list!
Edit: Looks like I'll probably be sticking on direct x9.

Does anyone know if the hi-res textures ship with the game, or are they an add-on? Anyone have any official information? Did this german magazine use some mod of their own or? I'm not in the loop, sorry... and thanks for any info.

I had trouble with the inability to level up during combat in DAO because of how companion XP was awarded.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

Companions got XP when they left the camp, so if you had a "random" encounter on your first trip away from camp, you'd end up in combat with some characters who were several levels behind the Warden.
I don't know how XP is awarded to companions in DA2, but at least now we can be reasonably sure that this probelm can't occur.
