Why do you have to justify it or see it as "weird"? It shouldn't even matter if you're secure enough in your masculinity, and having her romance a male character shouldn't be a bother if you're not insecure about your sexuality.

I play as a human female warrior in DA Origins & I liked how the story went while I played her. It was more fun & for one there was no female wardens really & your party was mostly males. & for me the male avatars looked like crap in the creation appearance. the Females had a better creation app. Finally most all games always have a male hero & I wanted to have a heroin for once. now DA2 i not sure if i'll be male or female hawk. But I want to play a mage & keep hawks sister. I really dont care for hawks brothers at all & from the look of the game it seems you get a party of mostly warriors & rogues. Mage's play better in DA2 from what I see & how the demo played. just hope I can play a mage & keep hawks sister in my party.

But what about gay guys who only play as female characters? What's their reasoning?

My favorite excuse. Right up there with, "I make her have sex with chicks."

Agreed.  I love it, because it always feels like such an excuse.  It's like - dude - if you play female characters because you enjoy playing female characters, just admit it.  Maybe you like tough chicks - or frilly, girly girls - and secretly the idea of playing one kind of titilates you; whatever ... you don't need to tell people that, but why should you feel a need to make up an excuse either?  Macho thing, I'm sure.  Me, I'm not macho, I admit it ... drives my brother with his "good ole boy" sensibilities up the wall.

I can play as a man, so why can’t men play as woman?
I will admit I usually prefer playing as a girl but that’s just a personal preference thing, I like female heros and because I suck at making decent looking male characters.
Maybe it depends on how you approach a character in an RPG. Do you consider yourself to be that character or are simply pulling the strings? I usually lean more towards the latter so playing as a different gender or an **** doesn’t bother me.

I don't see anything weird about it. I play characters of both sexes.

I'm actually surprised people think it's weird. I'm straight and I think I actually prefer playing as a woman, probably because I'm about as camp as a tent, and I'm importing my female City Elf. Plus, let's face it, FemHawke is pretty hot.

EDIT
And my male characters look like they don't have half a brain cell or REALLY ugly.

SUPER EDIT
And Male Hawke is voiced by that ****face, Vaughn. No offence to the VA, just now when I hear it I think YOU RAPED SHIANNI! Die.

It's quite simple actually. There is the type of player who always wants to identify himself / herself with the PC he or she plays. This type usually plays the same gender.

The other type is not interested in identifying him or herself with the PC, he or she just experiences a story from a third-person perspective and chooses the gender more freely.

I'm the latter. ;)

Roleplaying means that you pick up a role. Not that you need to identify with it or anything. Big difference!

That said, I don't care if I play a male, or females not oriented like me, someone incredibly naggier, heck, -any- characteristic different from actual me. I'd never act like my evil mage elf Warden, or respectful paragon Shep. That's what roleplaying is there for.

I started roleplaying women's when I was 12 years old, and now I'm transitioning to the other gender. You have been warned!!! *Ominous voice.*

Any male enjoying RPing a female should think about coming out of the closet, if he has not came out of it already. Just sayin' No offense.

Then when Bioware actually released the statistics for the game, it showed that 81% of players played DudeShep..
I LOL'd hard at that one Image IPB

It showed that 80% of players had played a MaleShep. We have no idea if that means MaleShep exclusively, or if some of those players had also played a FemShep. Interpreting the wording strictly, you could roll 19 FemSheps and 1 MaleShep and be part of that 80%. Obviously MaleShep is more popular, but we really have no idea of the ratio, so perhaps you should LOL a bit less.

Replying to the actual OP ...

You just need to decide which is more annoying to you: playing as a female (regardless of your reasonings for not liking it) or hearing the god-aweful voice acting that is male Hawke.

Every game like this, I always play as a good-guy male rogue on my first playthrough, then on my second playthrough I play a bad-guy female mage. However, for this game my tradition will be broken because I too cannot stand the VA for male Hawke.

I will play both because Bioware dedicated a large amount of resources for 2 voice actors...I intend to play the maximize the game and go through all the features possible.

And guys who watch movies and TV shows where the protagonist is a female also need to come out of the closet...amiright?

Just laugh at him and move on, people like him were raised to think in a certain way, you can't change that =)

I play both female and male, for me it depends on animation and voice. I still have not tried female character, but seeing how they walk and run makes me /puke.

ME1: Female

DAO: Male

ME2: Female

DA2: Probaly male, since i like their animation much more than the female one.

I am not usually up for playing as female character, if it's RPG. It took me awhile to be able to play female character in MMORPG, but that was mainly because each time I made one, I got sickening messages.

I tried again in ME1 & 2, but it still didn't feel right.

DA2, I will however play as female. I am so glad, that Isabela swings both ways.:P

Anyway, I have nothing against people playing female characters, nor did I ever have anything against them. As long as it's fun, it's all good.

Yeah this explanation pretty much nails it.  I'm one of those that identify with my created character, so it's much more difficult for me to play a female PC.....unless that female PC's identity has already been established ie Lara Croft.

I hardly ever make female characters and I only once did so in Origins just to see the City Elf origin from their perspective and that's it. I don't like the idea of playing a female character because I tend to play a game more from my own point of view through my character, kind of a 'If I would live in those situations, how would I be?" deal.

I don't mind when other people play a female or male character regardless of their own gender but I do mind it when it is forced upon myself to play as a female character. That's why every game should at least have a gender customization option. I can completely understand it if the female gamers among us feel annoyed that so many games do not.

As a gay man, I am perfectly comfortable playing both. In Bioware games, I tend to first play the gender based on the available love interests. In Dragon Age Origins, Alistair was FAR MORE my type than Zevran. So female Warden it was!

For DA2, again it'll depend on whether or not Anders swings both ways. If he does, then I would prefer playing a male Hawke. Otherwise, looks like it's gonna be you and me, Lady Hawke.

Regardless, I intend on eventually playing out both genders and all romances.

That is the "problem"(?) of some guys: if I play a RPG game  I actually do not want to look at any ass but just want to  play the game :) If i want to look at asses I do something different ^^
I prefer playing male: maybe I am a chauvinist but a female warrior isn't just doing it for me ( thief/mage are okay though ....)

The reason for people playing female is in my opinion very obvious: experience the lesbian way ^^
From what i saw in my years of rpg experience (polls in gaming forums)  the amount of people playing female rose commensurate to lesbian content....
