No problem at all playing a female.

How do you play a women well? Easy. I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability.

Oh!  I know that line.  I see what you did there!

I play characters based on concepts. I don't envision myself in the character, but I create the character as he or she would fit into the world of the game.

So I have no problem pursuing romance options I'd avoid in real life with some characters. In Origins I had a male mage who defiled the Ashes and romanced Morrigan, something I would never personally do, for instance. To me its my character who is pursuing the romance, not me.

I hate to say it, but am I the only one weird-ed out by that whole saw about "staring at a chick's rear end" as an excuse to play a female character? Geez its just a game, it's like playing a fighting game and picking your best character, sometimes your best character is the opposite of you. Including gender.

Meh. Hale is undoubtedly a very talented VA, regardless of your opinion of her approach to Shepard.

But Meer... I've seen more emotive bricks. I'm not talking opinion here, his voice pitch and timbre hardly ever change. Whether you think that suits the role or not is another matter.

Uh God, I hate when people use that "insecurity" line when they don't know what they're talking about.

It's FAMILIARITY not insecurity.

It could be either.

I play both pretty equally I think. Usually male on the first run, but I'm having doubts for DA2. Female Hawke's movements are just hypnotic :P .

As I plan to be a mage in DA2 for the first run, I think I'll play as Lady Hawke. My reasoning is that as, for no real reason, I feel a female character is better suited as a Mage recently.

In single player RPGs or other games, I don't have any problem with playing as a female. If I ever played MMOs, I'd probably stick with a male character, as I think I'd what the character to be as much like me as possible.

I might do a female 2h warrior eventually in DA2, as it'd be interesting to see her hold these massive swords etc.

I only have an aversion to males that play females in MMORPGs, not single-player ones. I've seen too many dudes trying to get perks from other players because they use smilies or call people "hun." I don't really give a crap either way. Both give you a unique gameplay experience.

If this is why you're doing it, I agree.  I have played female characters in mmos because I've found a better quality rp community among female players, but typically they are very wary of male characters and rarely let them into their cliques.  I am very good at playing women in mmos, when I have time to think about my responses ... I have had other women, who later found out the truth, tell me this. (and yes, I can verify those were women; I dated at least two of them, and met at least four others in person)

Usually I can pick out men pretending to be women on mmos, because they're typically not very good at it, but on the rare occasion when I cannot I don't worry myself over much about it - I figure if they're good enough rpers to trick me, then that's all that matters.  (because I am there precisely to rp)

Well, then let's be polite and not associate everyone who plays FemShep and enjoys her VA with a small but extremely vocal (one might say too vocal) minority ^_^

Everyone says there is a lot of emotion in the female shep performance. All I hear is devoicing the last 2-3 syllables and very unreal intonation (no curves characteristic for English). I think Meer did a better job being neutral, although it does sometimes come through a bit dull (while Hale is just forced).

And hell, even that is only my opinion. But I am baffled at the constant Meer bashing with people sounding off like it's a common fact.

I assume you do not know of the Gaming Gender Police, or GGP. They constantly monitor every gamer around the world to make sure they play as their real gender, in video games. When I was little, I used to play Street Fighters II with my brother, he decided to give Chun Li a try one day, and well, let's just say I lost a brother and gained a sister.

What I am saying is, men should always play as men, and vice versa.

I've never understood this reasoning. The only way you'd see your characters ass all the time male or female is if you were actively staring at it, otherwise you'd just see their back. Which is the main thing I see when I play a 3rd person character.

The people who say "its better than staring at a mans ass for 40 hours" must have some deep sexual issues.

FHawke is sexy. Isabella's glorious uh..... Maker blessed attributes (yea there we go, that should keep me safe from being banned), will make for some fine romance scenes.

Honestly, a guy can play as a woman and not be a homosexual. You have to separate fantasy from reality, and still be able to roleplay.

I also tend to repeat things I've said in previous posts on these forums I think....

I like FemHawke's VA more than the VA of MaleHawke and her default appearance looks good too. But I don't tend to Roleplay the opposite gender in any game unless it isn't my choice, i.e. FF13. I am unsure myself if I will play as FemHawke and want to know other guys' though on this.

If I do play as a female, thank the Maker there is Isabela, would feel even more weird romancing a male.:bandit:

I play both, about 50/50. I  play women because they are hot and they can have hot lesbo sex with Isabella and/or Leliana. I also have them do romances with normal male npcs as well because that is just like straight porn. One thing I can never bring myself to do is romancing a another guy AS a guy, i.e. male/male; I am too straight for that.

I don't understand why playing a video game in which your character has a gay relationship has any bearing on you. It sounds more like you're repelled by being involved, however tenuously, in male/male romance situations than anything. I mean, your straightness doesn't really have any bearing on anything that you do in the game. I'm not picking on you or anything, I'm just saying this in general; I have a friend that does the same thing and I always ask does that mean that he doesn't like the guy in the porn he watches to be handsome w/a big ****. Part of our ability to derive enjoyment from this kind of voyeurism comes from appreciating the attractiveness of everyone involved. If that's the case, I'm not sure why male/male romances are difficult for straight people to handle, particularly if they like girl/girl stuff.

But now I'm about to break out into some social theory stuff which means I've spent too long working on my thesis and not enough playing Tactics Ogre and MvC3.

My two favorite romances in DA were Zevran (as a gay relationship) and then Morrigan. Alistair was kind of annoying, I despised Leliana, and sadly couldn't romance Sten, male or female.

I dunno. I just don't get why people have these weird existential issues with things they do in video games. I could see if it was something truly gruesome like Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer, but this is just a mass of pixels made to look like it's kissing another mass of pixels. There's no bearing on my identity or reality whatsoever. It's kind of interesting to me that people identify to this extent with games, though. I guess it's good that players can do this degree of self-insertion.

But yeah, I like FemHawke, I like MaleHawke, I'll probably do both of them.

Get it?

Sometimes I prefer to play as the opposite sex in a game. Other times not so much. For me it depends on what kind of character I want to develop. I played primarily female wardens. The one male warden that I did complete the game with I really enjoyed. I noticed when playing females I seemed to immerse myself better, connected better to the game. Not the same with both ME1 and ME2. I hate to say it but I really like my male shep over my female shep, and it really had nothing to do with the voice actors.

I have to agree with this.  I don't play MMORPGs, but I have a strong dislike for guys on these forums that pretend to be females when they're not.

They have a female avatar, and a female screename, and they are often the biggest proponents for including F/F.

Those kind of guys disgust me, and they're quite a few of them around here unfortunately..

I tend to play both genders in BioWare games, to see the differences and
vary up characters, though a male character is always my main.

For myself, when I play a male character, I feel more immersed in the character, like I'm taking the role of the character. But when I'm a female character, I see it more like I'm watching a movie and the PC is a character in it - albiet one that I'm directing. One's not necessarily better than the other, but it's a different experience.

Also, once I play a character in a voiced game, the voice is tied to that face. It's hard for me to play other manSheps because Mark Meer's voice is tied to my custom face in my brain. Having my alt be a femShep is a natural way to avoid this problem.
