My thought is that you're a little insecure if you feel "weird". It's just a game. Would you feel "weird" playing a character of a different race, or even species? If not, what's different about another sex?

Uh God, I hate when people use that "insecurity" line when they don't know what they're talking about.

It's FAMILIARITY not insecurity.

This.

I declare this topic dead, there is trolling plus the whole insecurity posters not getting it. Going off to play more of the demo with both genders, may that will help more, haha.

Nothing wrong with males playing as female protagonists in video games. If you think there's something awkward about it, maybe YOU'RE the one with issues...

I'm actually surprised people think it's weird. I'm straight and I think I actually prefer playing as a woman, probably because I'm about as camp as a tent, and I'm importing my female City Elf. Plus, let's face it, FemHawke is pretty hot.

EDIT
And my male characters look like they don't have half a brain cell or REALLY ugly.

SUPER EDIT
And Male Hawke is voiced by that ****face, Vaughn. No offence to the VA, just now when I hear it I think YOU RAPED SHIANNI! Die.

I agree with that last bit. What bothers me is that he's voiced by him....and you can romance Merrill....true Hawke is waaaay different from Vaughn but still......*shudders*:?

Anyways, about this topic:
I don't think its in any way strange for a man to play as a woman in a game. I mean, its just a game.
My husband is a fellow gamer and in ME, ME2, and DAO, he has played both male and female characters. He simply says that he finds it boring that most games out there have a male protagonist and very few have a female protagonist. I'm the same way. It's nice to be able to play a game and have a badass female character to play as. And something Bioware does well: Making their female protaginists really badass.

Now, personally, I usually play as a female unless I'm forced to do otherwise. And even if I'm forced to play as a male character, I still enjoy the game quite a bit(Assassin's Creed, Legend of Zelda, DMC, etc). But if the option is given, I typically go for the female. Mainly because if I create the character's appearance, I'm far better at making a woman than a man, to be honest.

Meh. I like playing as a girl because I am one. My brother likes playing as a lady because they are pretty to look at. I like to "be" the PC, my brother likes to look on.

I feel like this sums up half of the arguments here.

And it is still funny, because people on these forums thought they were a good representation of the majority of Bioware's customers, when they are in fact only a very small minority.

The vast majority of Bioware's customers do not post on these forums at all..

For most developers, there is a balancing act between making the game they want to make, pleasing their dedicated fans (generally the people you see participating in the community), and appealing to as wide an audience as possible.

Halo: Reach is a good example. Bungie made a number of changes to appeal to a wider, more casual audience, but alienated much of the minority you refer to. The result? Very impressive sales, but a much lower number of people still playing the game. But at the end of the day, they'll laugh all the way to the bank, so what does it matter?

I just wouldn't be eager to celebrate the minority status of the vocal customers. Many of them are those who are passionate about the product; they're taking the time to be heard, after all. They offer more insight than the silent majority.

I love the male Hawke much more than the female Hawke. His lines are done with more authority and charm, and his movements are also more graceful and powerful. The female Hawke can be pretty, but she moves awkwardly and sounds like a little girl when she asks questions. If this was any other game I would play the male because I like him better, but there are too many gender specific interactions and comments to be playing as the opposite gender in a Bioware game, for me, during the first time through at least.

Yeah I feel awkward playing as a female as well especially during the romances. Even though I usually always do play one on my 3rd or 4th playthrough anyway just to play the game from a females perspective.

I only have an aversion to males that play females in MMORPGs, not single-player ones. I've seen too many dudes trying to get perks from other players because they use smilies or call people "hun." I don't really give a crap either way. Both give you a unique gameplay experience.

I have to agree with this.  I don't play MMORPGs, but I have a strong dislike for guys on these forums that pretend to be females when they're not.

They have a female avatar, and a female screename, and they are often the biggest proponents for including F/F.

Those kind of guys disgust me, and they're quite a few of them around here unfortunately..

THose people actually should consider looking at the "asian game market" B)

I have never, ever, ever understood the desire to play as a different gender.  I am a guy, so naturally, it's going to be easier for me to think like a guy.  I think most guys do it just to see the girl-girl sex scenes.

<_< How shallow.

I can be shot but not by you. You have tried, and failed embarassingly.

P.S. It is bad to live in denial. Just sayin' :P

Edit: Twice you have failed miserably :(  Have you heard the saying "third time tells the truth!" Good luck for your next attempt!

I like playing females... in ME2 I played a total renegade hardcore chick. There was nothing gay about it, I thought she was hot >.<

I have to disagree. Some guys just enjoy to watch strong chicks kicking ass. Playing as female character allows you to choose how you go about it.

That's at least why I am going to play FemHawke first. I might get into MaleHawke more easily, but I rather watch the kick ass parts first. B)

I think if that's the only reason a guy plays as a female, then yes they are shallow. However, I enjoy playing as a female because it gives me a different viewpoint of the game, so I can appreciate the story all the more so. And yes, I do enjoy the girl-girl sex scenes, but I'm a guy. A guy who has more than just his erotic fantasies as reasons to play the opposite gender. Sue me.
