So I Purchased NWN2: gold from Direct2drivce 3 years ago.  Since then, I've formatted my computer several times.  Chalk it up to me not totally understanding the punishment that DRM puts on us paying customers.  I now get a message when I try to reinstall NWN2 stating  "Too many activations on different PCs have been performed with the entered Registration Code. No further activations are allowed."  Atari gave me a copy/paste answer asking for a number of things I can't provide because its a digital download from D2D.  D2D won't help as they say its atari's responciblity to fix this.  Any idea what I could do?

This won't help you now, but when you do get it figured out you might want to install the game on an external drive. I have changed machines several times since buying the game and have no problems. I can also take it with me to use on my brother's computer when I visit him. Just remember to back up your saves before you mess with your pc's hard drive. I keep copies of my saves on the same external drive.

Well, was there anything in your purchase agreement that stipulated number of installs?

I don't think there's anything you can do to force them, but if you have the agreement, and it doesn't say anything about this, you should be able to press for re-activation.

Unless by "too many" they mean 746,934 (+/- 746,925). Then you might be SOL.

To not worry about this, you can spring $20 and get the whole thing patched and everything on Steam.

I haven't used D2D, so to be honest I have no idea what type of installation limitations they have there. Most companies that have an activations limit also have a revoke tool that you can use.

Atari wouldn't have anything to do with this because they don't impose an activation limit, Direct2Drive does.

In fact, Atari has steadfastly refused to deal with this sort of situation in any other manner than to refer you back to the Digital Download provider and go through them. So D2D would have to know this is the Atari policy (because that's how Atari does all their digital downloads that are not directly from Atari.com) and while you may not be able to "force" them to give you reinstall ability, I am willing to be that they do have a Revocation Tool somewhere on their site. You might just Google/Bing/Lycos/Alta Vista/Ask.com a search with: Revoke Tool, D2D, NWN2 and see what comes up.

best of luck and please let us know how this all plays out.
