Im hoping that that entire "intro sequence" has been severely cut and edited for the purposes of demonstrating combat mechanics etc. As far as story telling goes it was horrific.



If they want me to really feel for this family on the run, chased out of their homes, I should get to see them at ease and comfort in their homes first.Really the first five mins at least of the game should have been in Lothering, getting a feel for how the Hawke's live. THEN they get brutally ripped from reality as they Darkspawn invade and destroy everything, we see the house burning etc their friends bodies strewn across the ground.



I guess I've basically just described the Human Noble origin from DAO haven't I... oh well... it was effective because we got to see the character at ease around his family. I was genuinely gutted when the companion that i had had come to my room got brutally shot down in front of me and I could do nothing, because i'd invested time in her (even though it wasn't much time at all).

I can't believe one bad screenshot has created such a bad image for poor Carver! Tell me people, have you *never* have a bad photo of you circulate on sites such as Facebook? Imagine if you had random strangers say 'oh god, s/he is a dick! Look at her/him! S/He is so herp derp!'.

I don't like to make quick judgement calls on companions that we honestly barely know. However, out of Carver and Bethany, Carver holds the most engaging personality to me. So many options to roleplay around. You could continue down the rivalry path, or attempt to reconcile it in the event of the death of your sister..

So really people. Judging on appearance? I'm going to be blunt and say grow up. I can't believe it's actually going on in a game. It's bad enough that it goes on in real life. ¬_¬'

I imagine that, unlike the demo, the actual game won't skip straight from the death to a quest some time after meeting several characters, and that in that time such an event might possibly be mentioned.

I would've been affected more if I didn't know that it was coming. Wesley was more affecting because I got Hawke to do it.

i feel like there was no connection to their deaths because we didn't spend any time with them. i know that when i was playing DA:O or ME2, by the half way mark i definitely wanted every character to survive because i had some type of attachment to them. In the beginning i didn't feel this way.

I wouldn't except there's clearly a number of people who post seriously in every thread they can about how great Bethany is and horrible Carver is. .

My post obviously wasn't aimed at those posting in a humorous way. It was only really aimed at a few people, yet I still think my points still stand

Honestly, I didn't expect to. Character that is supposed to be my sibling dies within, what, 3 minutes of me actually meeting them? And then we just move on anfd fight more DS. And then Wesey dies.

I felt more in the DE origin, not because we spent more time with Tamlen (maybe we did, but by about 3 minutes) but because it seemed important - there was more dialogue about it later.

As a HN in Origins, you had a chance to interact with your family, although you didn't actually see any die. You also had to leave your parents behind while they were alive. Again, a little more impact.

But I didn't expect to feel anything. Maybe it factors in later - we'll see in 2 weeks. But as of now, no big deal.

what about Mhairi in Awakening. i was really sad that she died at the joining. same thing for ser Jory and Daveth

I cant say i cared either about Carver, I was even making snide comments about it to Flemeth. Though from the short time, i liked Bethany, I was glad she survived.

I was playing the demo today, usually when I play a game for the first time I make sure to be alone or I cant really show my feelings.. But when I played this Demo and Wesley died I got a little teary eyed even with my girlfriend behind me. Really emotional scene so I was a bit dissapointed when my own sister/brother died and I was pretty much " ATLEAST I GOT XP LETS GO TO THE NEXT FIGHT HEHE"

I predict we will end up seeing Bethany's or Carver's spirit in the Fade or one some quest.

And besides, they are fleeing the darkspawn time was of the essence for them to escape.

Oh, that STILL bugs me.  I just started a new Awakening run, and it bothered me.  Poor Mhairi.  

See, Bioware can help us make that emotional connection when they want.  They just didn't do it here.

Actually,having played the demo as both a Mage and a Rogue,I felt a little miserable momentarily after seeing Carver getting squashed,but I didn't feel anything when it happened to Bethany.

Maybe it's because I have a little brother IRL,I don't know.
