Im hoping that that entire "intro sequence" has been severely cut and edited for the purposes of demonstrating combat mechanics etc. As far as story telling goes it was horrific.

If they want me to really feel for this family on the run, chased out of their homes, I should get to see them at ease and comfort in their homes first.Really the first five mins at least of the game should have been in Lothering, getting a feel for how the Hawke's live. THEN they get brutally ripped from reality as they Darkspawn invade and destroy everything, we see the house burning etc their friends bodies strewn across the ground.

I guess I've basically just described the Human Noble origin from DAO haven't I... oh well... it was effective because we got to see the character at ease around his family. I was genuinely gutted when the companion that i had had come to my room got brutally shot down in front of me and I could do nothing, because i'd invested time in her (even though it wasn't much time at all).

Word. The storytelling was awful and didn't work at all. Too much repetetive combat, not nearly enough character-building. I can and often do develop an immediate fondness for and connection with NPCs, but that didn't happen at all with Hawke's family. The only character I actually cared for a bit was Aveline (and Flemeth wowed me). As for the family, half the time they said anything I was just bored, and the rest of the time I was annoyed.

Hopefully Bioware sees this and knows they made a mistake

I thought the sibling's death was sad, but none of the PC responses to it were as emotional as I thought they should have been.  This is something that has bothered me in games for a long time, going all the way back to Baldur's Gate.

I mean, the PC just saw their sibling beat into the ground like they were a ragdoll.

And what are Bioware going to do about it?, the game has gone gold.

I'm going on the assumption that since it was a demo, there was some story prior we weren't able to see & that the comments after the siblings death werent complete scripts... I am an optimist to the fullest.

I believe that Bioware has been mentioning that they wanted to jump straight into the action with this game so I'm assuming that what we saw was the whole intro and all there is to it. Since the motif for this game is that they wanted to skip to the cool parts and avoid periods of time that they think most players would rather skip, I suppose they cut out all the non action oriented parts of Hawke's past.

So.. people expect an entire games' worth of content and "emotional" appeal in a 45 min demo? When did standards get so high?

Agreed, there was a serious lack of emotion there, yet more for Wesley lol.

I hope this game has some real emotions (Like similar to when you have to leave your parents behind in the Human Noble Origins story), but then again this is the demo, we'll see when the game comes out.

I'm under the impression that the beginning sequence we saw IS the beginning sequence to the game.  Which would mean that what we saw is what there is.

Now, maybe that impression is wrong, and there is some more footage which allows us time to connect with our siblings.

But if it's right, then what we saw is what we get - so I don't see how having the full game will change that lack of connection.

Bioware stated that its not meant to be super sad and make you cry. Its meant to set the stage for things that are to come later in the game

Regardless, it felt completely wrong.

Did anyone LOL at one of the dialogue options being along the lines of 'at least father won't be lonely now'. What a terrible terrible line to say. The intonation with which it was said made it sound sarcastic also.

I found it bemusing that you could say something about the sibling sacrificing themselves to save the party.

No... no they didn't. They charged at an ogre like a chump. They didn't save anyone, they just got... well, owned.

I didn't like it overly much either, but apparently it's used to define some of the story later on. We weren't supposed to care.

Sure, how could we, we only know them for a few minutes. But Hawke should care and he/she didn't, not particularly. In that regard, Bioware - as much as i like them - clearly failed. IMHO.

True. It felt abit weird seeing bethany die and not feel especially sad over it.

Carver being used as an ogre basketball however...

Except maybe it's not a mistake and what we saw in the demo isn't what's in the final game as indicated by previous posters. I hope that's the case.

So, Hawke won't care that Beth/Carver is dead until, what, 6 years later?

I can understand there being some plot point developing later in the game about this death.  But are you saying they didn't try to make it emotional, just used it as a plot device?

That's . . . disturbing.

Seeing your younger sibling get pounded into the dust isn't supposed to be sad?  That makes me wonder what is supposed to be sad, then.

Well carver always was sort of a douche. Also the ogre has like a total of 2 armor plates...on its whole body.... located on its arms...Where does Carver hit it? yeah.
  Bethany however:crying:

I didn't feel sad, but I did feel a need to avenge the sibling. Which I did. I didn't feel too sad over Wesley's death either. I saw it as a thing that needed to be done to keep the group moving and together. That way I wouldn't die.

See, I didn't feel that, either.  I just felt "oh, down one party member . . . where's the replacement?"

I found the acting besides the mother to seem really flat. I felt terrible because I know I would never want to lose a sibling. But I mean I didn’t feel as bad for Wesley because his seemed all over dramatic when he acted like an a** when he was just saved. I'm still really upset about not saving both siblings even if both didn't stay in the party. I would have rather Wesley get crushed by the Ogre!!! Image IPB
