I've downloaded from the main Bioware site and from the appropriate a mirror site, so twice.  Got the same crash issue.

Now just to clears some possible issues.  It takes a while of clicking on the Star Spangled Banner button to get the download started.  But it did download okay on both occasions.

The install was weird.  Open the file and nothing happens for 5 to 10 minutes.  Then a window opens and starts counting at 1%.  Install took about 30 minutes in total.

The game starts. Getting to the grey opening menu screen showing Configuration,  Support, Uninstall menu options on the left and Play on the bottom.  So far, so good.  I click play and see the dragon flying, then a screen with a woman and man looking at each other with the "Press any Key" glowing.

When I press any key, my PC locks up.  I cannot do anything.  ctrl+al+del does not work.  press reset.  I've tried several different configurations from the Configuration menu based on other peopls posts, but to no avail.

Here is my dxdiag:
LOL, I get this meesage about 6 times while opening dxdiag.  "DXdiag has detected that there may have been a problem accessing direct 3D the last time this program was used.  Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time?"

If all the drivers are up to date then turn off V-Sync in the game that has resolved similar issues before.

Okay, done. Now it's a black screen with faint singing. Mouse can move. but screen ramians black. ctr+alt+del. Task Manager shows Dragon Age II -v1.00, status is not responding.  But the screen with the press any key did close properly.

I had some lockup issues myself. You've prolly already done this, but my problem was that the config utility selected DX11 by default. Changing it to DX9 solved my problem.

Where is this?  The Renderer under the config menu?  if it is, it's all greyed out and I cannot change it.

Where is this option?  Under the config menu where it says Renderer?

Well under the Config Menu, I can change the
Resolution (1152x648), Aspect ratio (Widescreen 16:9), Graphics Detail (Low) and Anti-Aliasing (Off).

I cannot change, because they are greyed out.
Language (English), VO Language (English), and Renderer (DirectC 9)

I could not change the renderer if I tried.

Below this are 5 toggle box options.  All of which are empty.

I had the same problem when my firewall was active. Try disabling your firewall.
