I still think its the onboard sound...that adds extra strain on your cpu, and as said your cpu is an old one. I wonder if your mobo supports overclocking, probably not, and your stock fan probably couldnt handle it anyways...But you might manage to squeeze a bit more juice outta her. Could also OC the video card.

Disclaimer: Remember any form of overclocking is taken at your own risk. Will not be held responsible if you kill your system from my suggestion. Mind you I am a rampant overclocker...cant get enough...

Other things to do might be disable anti-virus while you play. Check the Nvidia control panel to make sure it's using single screen mode instead of multi-screen mode. And lastly, try running the game at a lower resolution, but be sure to check your nvidia control panel to turn off flatscreen scaling first or it'll all look blurry.

I'm going to absolutely disagree with this (re: sound) but with the greatest of respect and not from a position of knowlwdge.
I simply don't understand how on board stereo sound is any less than a card. They perform the same function. The game reads the sound and sets itself to that and you can force stereo.
even if there is a sound issue there is rarely a case where the video will wait for sync with the sound. A sound card is pretty basic, once they get into high end processing for dolby 7:1 it's different but to all intent and purpose an on board stereo sound chip is going to be as usefull and less troublesome than a 3rd party card providing you have the drivers for your mobo up to date.

I could put a hammer through my sound card now and all that would happen is I'd get no sound. It has no bearing on gameplay.

@ Anomandaris did you run CPU-Z? it should tell you what chipset your processor is. If it's a Socket 775 you ought to be able to pick up an upgraded multicore processor on the cheap (assuming of course you can't OC your system... mine runs cool and stable despite being at 4.9 Ghz

True I had assumed that the op would already have shut down all background tasks. Thats what you get for assuming though.
*edit:

More importantly things like cpu-z will let him get his numbers for his Mobo and make sure its compatable with other chips also. Just because its socket 775 doesnt always mean its something that should go in that board.

Onboard sound uses both cpu clock time and system ram as resources. Its fine when your ram and cpu are way over spec, but when riding the fence they can make all the difference.

Ok I'm happy to accept the reasoning. It's not something I'm aware of (associate in applied science computer network admin) but when it gets to components I'm far less educated than I am on wide area systems. (although I did do my undergraduate degree in TV and Audio electronic servicing )

But the point is to agree on things that fix the game for as many of us as possible so please excuse the fact that I am often an arse ;)
