He turned on me for the first time ever (in the allie). He had positive approval of me but it guess it wasn't high enough. I always forgave him and felt sorry for him since (at least he says) he was taken as a child and forced into being a Crow.

But now it seems he's just an opportunist. And if this was reality he wouldn't be very smart either. By the time he gets to that fork in the road he has to have seen the Warden's crew defeat impossible odds. Poor Zev. RIP

In my first playthrough, Zevran stuck on my side, but in his defense, when I played through it again and he turned against me, I chose the option "Fine, I'll kill you all" or whatever the line was, and on top of that I was never very kind to Zevran in that file. I just ignored him for the most part.

But yeah, it was a cruel thing when he turned on me. Nevertheless, it came...

Nearly half of your companions have been opportunists at one point or another. And besides that he likes Taliesen more than you.

You're calling him cruel for picking his best friend over a person he barely knows?

Yup, approval wasn't high enough.  Get him above 30% and he won't turn on you, though he may refuse to fight Taliesen.  Get him above 70% in a romance or 90% as a friend and he'll tell you something that explains why he would turn on the Warden at below 30%.

Not defending him by any stretch of the imagination, so don't mistake this as such.  Just, he has a reason for turning on you, and its not because he thinks he has a chance--quite the contrary, in fact, because by then he knows you're a sure bet.

So what's the reason? I don't mind a spoiler

He was trying to suicide by cop. He stood by while the one Crow he really cared for (and probably loved) was killed, just let it happen, later found out she wasn't responsible for any of the stuff that was pinned on her, decided to off himself by taking a contract no one else would take. So if you don't give him a reason to live, he seizes the opportunity when it arises.

I can tell you. he explains that he went after the wardens in the first place because he wanted to die due to his last mission with the Crows. If you aren't at least friends with him...he still wants to die.

All you have to be is 26+, and I'm not sure how you could NOT be there unless you didn't give him his plot gifts.

Oh, you do have to have a talk with him when he moves out of neutral -- he asks what your plans for him are. Once you have this conversation, though, as long as you're at least warm, he won't turn on you.

In my first playthrough he turned on me. I killed him and barely regretted it.

His plot gifts aren't expecially easy to find, in my experience.

the shoes are in Haven in the shop, I believe right next to the front door if I'm remembering right. and the gloves are in the forest at the empty camp past the Grand Oak (this one some people might miss, I guess). plus any gold and silver bars you find along your journeys are good for 8 points or so a piece. I think it's far easier to miss Morrigan's mirror in Orzammar. Until I got into the habit of buying every gift I found I missed it the first few times I played the game .

Those boots! Gr. That box is locked, and I think you need full Deft Hands *and* 30 Cunning to get it open. I've had to go back to Haven just to get them, and the Ancient Elven Gauntlets in the ruins.

I've seen on the wiki where the box is supposed to be opened after you complete Sacred Ashes, but on the one run where I tried that, it didn't work (PC).

I usually get my deft hands up as soon as I can..I also use a bash lock mod and also a mage unlock spell mod so any of my characters can usually open it when I get there. I forgot that box is locked.

I didn't know about his plot gifts on my first run and had him betray me, too. Felt really badly about it when I found out what the deal was.

You don't need to give them to him at all if you're decent to him and talk to him, though.  He has large approval gains no matter what.  Plus there are three gold/silver bars before that time as well.  Plus, the boots aren't difficult to find at all -- though it does require opening every chest you come across.  The gloves, I can see how someone could miss them, but still, even one plot gift + a bar gets him high enough, even without conversation.  And if you take him with you, he approves of many things, and rarely disapproves of anything (and his disapprovals are usually not more than a couple of points).

The chest always unlocks for me for some reason -- when I get  back.

So long as you chat with him a bit and don't pick responses that are outright cruel or patronising, you shouldn't have a problem getting decent approval. Seriously, without giving the guy a single gift I had him above 26+ within a few minutes of dialogue. :)

I think one problem is a lot of players rush through the game without bothering to speak properly to their companions. And if you ignore Zevran, yes, he is designed to turn on you.

If you're against murdering people, talking with him doesn't do much good for your approval.

Once you know what gifts he likes, then yes, you can bribe him into friendship with large amounts of precious metal, but in your early playthroughs when you don't know the gift system and don't know where his plot gifts are, it's easy to end up with little approval from him.

In one of my earliest play throughs, he turned on me with an approval rating of 61 or so. Since that playthrough, I have either killed him or let him go because yes I thought he was more trouble than he was worth.

I did not know it at the time, but perhaps I had triggered the romance with him unknowingly....*shudder*....because all this talk of only needing +26 approval to assure he doesn't turn on you is news to me.

Well ordinarily I have very high approval from him without trying. But I was doing a rushed play through and didn't care too much. For my non-key companions I was content with them being modestly positive. I was under the impression he only betrays you if he's negative.

That sounds like a bug.  He will leave the fight if romanced with approval that low, but he's back at camp.  Is that what you mean by turned on you??

I mean that he turned on me and sided with Taliesen (sp?) which infuriated me to no end.

Maybe it was a bug. I didn't patch my game for a month or so after I initially installed it.  In my experience, patching can cause bigger problems, at least with some other games cough*thesims3*cough :pinched:

You saved Sten's life from Darkspawn and he wanted to die initially but he's still willing to attack and berate you

It only comes up in one conversation, though; most are not about that at all.  And yeh, if you're judgemental of him, then you will run into problems -- just like, well, most people.
