I try to make my characters remotely alike. Yes. Of course they're quite off in some aspects, but that are games for you. I of course do not wear Tevinter Mage Robes in my spare time. Although I did try shopping for them once... tough to get I tell you that.

I actually fiound it very hard to make a character that looked like me which is strange because I`m an artist. I had no trouble doing a near identical version of me in Oblivion.
The face maker in Dragon A is terrible at doing affro hair. They`ve got a dread- locks type look in hair, but not much else. I can`t even get a decent close croparmy affro hair design which mine is, I have to go bald. Also, I just couldn`t get the cheeks right, I ended up with these deep cheek lines I don`t have.
Oh well, at least I look tough, unlike in the Sims 3 where making a male is almost impossible since no matter what you do you still end up looking like a girly man!

Hell no, it's a role-playing game, not self-insert game.

The is no Afro option available, so even the one dark-skinned character that I have doesn't complete the look.

I think I got myself quite accurately. I was using a mirror and it took a while. I couldn't get the cheekbones and jaw line right though due to lack of flexibility. I think I look like Jason Statham

Nope. *points* He's a guy, and I'm not.
And even with my female characters, I prefer them to look...like how I imagine them, which is not like me. Roleplaying for me isn't about self-insertion. Though I can understand how that would be fun for some people.

Mine doesn't.
But it seems that in every game where I can create my own character they end up looking very similar to this.

I tried to make my character to look like me. I think it's easier to put yourself in the main hero.

I do make the characters female (I've tried playing as a male before, and as hard as I try, I just can't get into it), but they do not always look like me. I do tend to choose a lot of dark haired avatars, which could be because of my own black hair, but I also try to think about the character and what I want them to be like.
For example, when I created my DN avatar, I wanted her to be a delicate, tender-hearted damsel, and I gave her blonde hair and made her fair with no tattoos. I was trying to think of the physical characteristics that might be outliers in dwarven society, and was attempting to make her almost an "elven-looking" dwarf - which would add to both hatred and envy of her (from a roleplaying perspective).
On the other hand, when playing an elven mage, I gave her strong cheekbones and dark hair, and wanted her to be a believer in her rights, someone who wants to be free, and who comes across as beautiful but tough. I wanted her to be a mage to be reckoned with, and gave her a look I thought complemented that.
So, I think, overall, I try to create characters who fit what it is I want to be immersed in, but don't necessarily look just like me (barring the fact that they have to be female). One reason I don't care so much about hair color and eye color is because even IRL, I dye my hair all sorts of colors and sometimes wear colored contacts, so I'm a bit of a chameleon myself.
Interesting topic!

No, I make my females with all different kinds of looks, fair to dark, though admittedly since I love red hair, most are redheads.
My males usually end up looking like Tyrone Power, though.

Of course all of my characters look just like me... even my elven ones
. As often as I change my hair color in real life though, even I don't know what I am supposed to look like.

Some of my morphs were made by Chuonrath. He took some of me and my wife's picks and made them for us, pretty close too. Then you use the tool to load them into your first save and it looks like you are in the game.

No way. I am prettier. LOL
Seriously though, I do like to make characters with dark eyes and hair. Feel more comfortable. I do have dark hair and eyes so, you know.
